  8. Hello, my name is Jacob. I just recently bought a xr500. WHen i got the bike the kick start spindle was snapped in the case. The frame was cracked and half the carb was missing. I've fixed the frame and the carb, but i need help finding the kick start spindle. I've looked all over ebay for the past 2 weeks and came up empty handed every day. IF any one knows any way i can get ahold of one pleas let me know. Or, is it possible to get one from a diffrent bike. Thanks for taking the time to read.

Got this bike for free when i was 16. Haven't gotten anything free since. It belonged to my girlfriends dad and had been sitting in his backyard for over 10 years (kickstart spindle had snapped from a spill.) A new kickstart spindle and can of spray start later, the thing ran flawlessly. Never had to do anything else on the bike throughout the time I owned it, which amazed me. We rattle canned the plastics and my mom made a seat cover which cleaned it up pretty good. Sold it when I was 20 and strapped for cash :(

  15. Well.. last winter I bought an old 84 xr500.. supposedly was rebuilt at a 'reputable' shop. One thing after another has fallen apart on that bike Exhaust studs fell out of the head Valve rocker pins fell out most engine mount bolts loosened off valve lash set too tight (0.000") And the WORST part? The head bolts were loose, so the head gasket died... Why were they loose? because they stripped them out of the head.. TWICE!.. they stripped the helicoils out on 2 bolts!!! Actually, that wasn't the worst part.. they couldn't put the clutch side cover on, so they used a bigger hammer, breaking the decompressor lever.. No big deal, right? until you pull a wheelie and that broken piece floating around goes between the engine/clutch gear and mangles it all to hell The only good news I've had is the bore is MINT and the piston/rings/valves are all perfect as well So now I gotta find a way to fix their screwups.. The worst of the stripped helicoils are the left side ones... I have a lathe and I can drill/tap square, but I'm wondering what my best options are here.. helicoil is out, they stripped that out already, so a threaded sleeve? Those head bolts go much deeper (3/4" below head surface) unlike the right side ones that are pretty much flush... I have some of the shorter bolts, should I use those? I'd use my spare cylinder but it's pitted, and don't feel like shelling out for rebore and new piston. #$%#$ backyard mechanics at "professional" shops

    1984 XR500R Help

Hey guys, This is my first topic here, and I seriously need some help with my old thumper. I bought the bike in running condition for $650. The plastics were faded, and to make a long story short, I used some love and now it looks brand new. I graduated from a tech College with a Motorsports Mechanics degree, and so I know my way around machines. I wanted to clean up the bike, so I disassembled the carbs, completely cleaned them out, valve adjustment, lubed throttle cables, new chain, sprockets, handlebars etc... SO! On to the problem. The bike starts up great, but smokes a TON, lots of white smoke. The bike did not do this before I cleaned it all out. When I say smokes a ton, I mean like, it smokes 10x more than an old 2-stroke. I know I did the valve adjustment correct, I changed the oil, I just cleaned up the bike, and now it runs "worse" than before. Any input as to what is going on would be greatly appreciated. (I don't know why the photos are upside down)

Great bike. lots of torque almost impossible to stall. climbs anything. excellent bike considering the year.
  23. First off i just wanted to hear if at all possible some people's experiences with the XR500 in particular... is it a good bike? I dont have any experience with Honda's RFVC motors. The 83 XR500 looks to be in great shape but the surprising thing is what has been done to it.. ive never seen it done on one of these. The story goes that the previous owner was a parts manager for a local Honda dealership in town and had access to the best of the best in parts.. From what i can tell by the pictures the bike has inverted forks redone by racetech, a dessert tank, some kind of aftermarket rear air shock, excel rims,a supertrapp exhaust but the most interesting of all is that it has a rear disk conversion... Ive never seen one of these bikes with a rear disk conversion, is it common? also the current owner does not know what the front fork came off; would it be hard to find out where there from to replace fork seals in the future? the same goes for the rear disk concerning pads As far as a trade do you guys think its worth it? The XR500 was recently pulled out of the guys shed the carbs were cleaned and the bike started up first kick supposedly, im going to go see it this afternoon. The yz (i attached a picture) has redone suspension as well, newer tires, renthal sprockets, FMF power bomb header and titanium 4 silencer and a few other things. Thanks in advance!
