  1. Hi recently rode a deep sand track and in high revs noticed an annoying clicking noise. Speaking to people they said it’s detonation and will be the main jet! I started to dismantle the carb and noticed the Reed block was only finger tight. Could the detonation just be caused from the reed block being loose as in an air leak?
  2. Hi all I have a ktm 300 exc 2017, didn’t make any mods, and run it about 20 hours. Last two rides I noticed a knocking sound coming from the engine, that stops on high revs. I have checked all the common causes (that I know of): loss parts and clutch, both are OK. I suspect that the problem is related to a jetting issue, maybe a lean mixture, or maybe it is related to detonation. Did someone encounter this issue? Any ideas? Your help please.
  3. Hey Guys, I finally updated my old 2012 rmz with a run out new 17. I managed 430 ish hours on the old girl with 3 rebuilds no real dramas. Problem is the new 17 is already giving me the shits that something is not right with it. The very first time I started it it smoked alot, I mean alot. Its my 5th brand new rmz and none have smoked like this. Then with the first oil change post run in there was alot of mater on both the oil filter and screen. Second oil change was after a xc race and trail ride both in the same weekend, 5 hours. That oil smelt like petrol. and it seemed noisy. Then this weekend I went to do the acerbis 4 hour, was going good too 3 hours in and the thing got real noisy I had to pull out sounds like its going to blow up. Thing is it goes like a cut cat. Anyone had issues from new?
  4. I own a 2006 Yamaha yz 125 and recently we have had a lot of issues with it. It started a few months ago where on track my bike would start breaking up on top, then would slowly bog down. As time went on it got worse, whenever the bike was hot it would misfire on top, even just sitting and revving it up, constantly misfiring but still staying high in the rev range. We went through all the electrical, checked everything hot and cold. We though we had narrowed it down to the stator, which was then replaced, but it didn’t fix anything. We did all the hot and cold electrical tests again and everything checked out. I then started it back up after hooking everything up, put in a new plug (BR9ES) and was revving it up to clear it out (wasn’t going overboard or anything, I’ve been doing this stuff for years and never ever blown up a motor) and then the bike completely locked up. I’m running 91 octane and octane booster with Amsoil 2-stroke oil mixed at 32.1. I’m resorting to here because I am at a complete loss, I don’t know if the motor was just tired and it was ready to go, or what, I’m just out of Ideas and some new opinions would be awesome.   5. So I went riding this weekend and bike was running good but on a long straight away I noticed a brief knocking noise. The noise occurred after a wide open run in 5th gear down straight away. After the bike topped out I got off the throttle and was flipping the throttle just to keep the cylinder lubed up. About the second and third "throttle blip" I heard a very audible knock in the engine. I'm not completely sure what the noise was but it sounded very similar to rod knock in a car. Only did it those two times and at very low throttle opening. I got back into the power-band and the noise went away. I did mix a gallon of fresh gas with some gas that was about 3 weeks old so I'm hoping it was just pinging but I'm thinking it could of also been piston slap or rod knock. After the ride as I was letting it run out of gas I did notice the engine seemed a little noisy but it seems that is common on the yz250. Does this sound like pinging or is my old engine getting tired?
  6. Hello TT universe… I've come across an interesting noise, and I can't quite pinpoint exactly what is causing it. It's a metallic pinging noise, it sounds like it's coming from either the front or top of my cylinder. It happens quite loudly at low rpms, especially when cold, however it does seem to continue even once the bike is thoroughly warm and ridden for a while. I uploaded a clip of the best audio i could get to youtube at this link : You can really hear it around the 4 sec. mark. The bike is a 2004 husqvarna cr125, 75 hours on the current vertex piston, 19 on the ring set. I run 91 pump gas mixed at 28:1 with Torco GP-7. So as usual, I decided to hit my marks to see if I could figure out what was going on. Pulled the top end apart and inspected the piston and spark plug for signs of a lean condition. Piston head shows clear carbon build up right around intake ports, and less build up around exhaust ports, which kind of makes sense. Picture also attached. Spark plug is chocolatey brown. Does not appear to be excessively lean, so I feel like it may not be detonation? Performance wise, the bike is not at all sluggish or boggy. Very responsive and smooth under heavy acceleration and when I need to access mid-rpm torque up through over-rev. This bike also eats up exhaust o-rings with the FMF pipe. I've adjusted the metal tabs for the rubber damper mounts on the expansion chamber, and since then its not as bad. I checked over the exhaust system before the tear down and all bolts were tight, exhaust was securely in the cylinder. I was thinking maybe it could be the exhaust rattling around. Maybe the piston is worn past tolerances and resulting in extra noise? Anyone have and ideas?
