  1. I'm currently looking at moving with work to Andalucia in Spain, just across the water from Morocco and am looking at building a new DRZ-400 into a Rally bike to take with me. I looked at getting a KTM or Husky or other 450cc, but the maintenance would be a killer, so my intent would be to build a DRZ-400 engine under 450cc which can put out a reliable 50+HP. The only must have's on this beast would be kickstart, a capacity smaller than 450cc to stay in the lightweight class and ability to work in hot n high environments. I'm guessing I'd build it using a set of wide gears? I get that the DR Rally bike will be heavier and I'll have to change a lot of the components like brakes and suspension to make it onto the same playing field as a KTM 450 EXC, but the key for me, is having a bike which means I can actually focus on the riding during a 4/5 day event and self deploy to the event, meaning I can start racking up experience. As well as Morrocan based rallies, I'd be looking at competing in the Rally Albania and Greek rallies and maybe getting off-road in the Sierra Nevada's. Thumper Hive Mind, hit me with your opinions and suggestions on how to achieve this goal.

TTers, Up for grabs is this sweet Michelin Pilot ROAD 4 rear tire in 150/70ZR17. Never mounted. Factory stickers are still on them. Not familiar with the Pilot ROAD series? Here's some info. These are especially great if you commute or want extended tire life and occasionally find yourself in some weather. http://motorcycle.michelinman.com/US/en/tires/products/pilot-road-4.html The back story: My DRZ 400 SM was stolen recently, and I'm sticking with the bike I have left (with pedals) until I finish school. Hence, I'm selling off some spare parts I have. I was just about to mount these tires when my bike was stolen. My loss = your gain. I paid $170 Yours for $140 obo. Prefer local pickup (I'm in West Lafayette, IN), but I will ship to CONUS. Buyer pays shipping. I have a Pilot Power 3 120/70 ZR17 also. For sale on separate thread. Buy them both and I'll be happy to cut a deal. Note: This is a slightly higher profile than the stock DRZ tire. PM me if interested. Ryan

TTers, Front tire beat after an epic riding season? Sick of those chicken strips from all that highway driving? I've got your problem solved! Up for grabs is this sweet Michelin Pilot Power 3 (2CT) front tire in 120/70ZR17. Never mounted. Factory stickers are still on them. Not familiar with the PP3/2CT? Here's some info. These are especially great if you commute or want extended tire life: http://motorcycle.michelin.com.au/US/en/tires/products/pilot-power-3.html The back story: My DRZ 400 SM was stolen recently, and I'm sticking with the bike I have left (with pedals) until I finish school. Hence, I'm selling off some spare parts I have. I was just about to mount these tires when my bike was stolen. My loss = your gain. I paid $110. Yours for $80. Prefer local pickup (I'm in West Lafayette, IN), but I will ship to CONUS. Buyer pays shipping. I have a Pilot Road 4 150/70 ZR17 also. For sale on separate thread. This is a slightly higher profile than the stock DRZ tire, so I didn't group them together. PM me if interested. Ryan

  4. I have a drz 400 that had a 39 pumper and mrd exhaust already installed with a 3x3 mod. I took it and a factory xr650l to New Mexico and rode them at 7000 to 8000 ft elevation. the 650 had no problems but the drz died a lot and just ran bad. I expected some difference due to the sea level jetting but not that bad. I started to think that it may be jetted too rich at sea level to begin with. when idling you can Rev it and it puffs some black smoke., and dies at red lights on long rides. I've included a picture of the air box mod that was done on it, I've never seen one done like this. is it ok or does it need a normal 3x3 mod. the picture of the carb shows how the carb is leaning, I tried to straighten it but the choke hits to fuel valve. is this a problem, if so what is the fix? lastly they removed the oil separater when the smog stuff was removed. the hose is ran into the air breather box with a filter on the end of it. the inside of the air box is covered in oil and it dips oil out of the air box after every ride. is this normal? I'm going to buy a jd jet kit and rejet it but just wasn't sure about the rest of these items.
  5. Setup: DRZ 400s with 3x3 airbox mod Old style slant FCR 39 with EMN needle on position 3 MRD Racing exhaust with quiet insert and spark arrestor. Problem: If I punch the gas the bike will cut out for a few seconds and then slowly recover. It is especially noticeable when I get on it hard and shift from 1st to 2nd gear. Also really bad if I climb a hill in 1st and then shift to 2nd coming off the hill. It will really cut out when I hit the throttle hard and then recover over the next several seconds. Notes: - I have done part of the Eddie mod where I zip tied the ap linkage arms together (there is a slight bit of slack so this should reduce/delay the pump shot slightly). - I did not grind the diaphragm stop down because I wasn't sure if I should. It has an aftermarket Boyeson pump bowl on it and I think that bowl may already move the diaphragm stop some. It may also make the shot stronger? - I moved the needle from 3 to position 1 (more lean) and it helped the throttle bog tremendously (almost doesn't cut out at all now during initial throttle) but the bike still cut out slightly and felt like it wasn't as smooth mid-WOT. What I'm suspecting is that I am getting too much pump shot initially which is flooding the bike when I hit the throttle. When I made the needle more lean (from 3 to 1) I think it made it better because the overall condition was more lean and the shot didn't flood it as bad. Questions: - Could the Boyeson pump bowl be causing too much fuel to be shot and causing a rich condition on initial throttle? - Any tips on how to move forward? The carb is such a huge pain to take off so it makes troubleshooting insanely difficult.
  6. I bought my DRZ new in April and have since accumulated 1,000 miles and use it to commute to work (I live 5 city miles away). I was starting to remove the air filter to begin the 3x3 mod and the filter was sticky and smelt like gas. I did some digging around the forum and found out there could be two reasons for this. The petcock is leaky or I left my carb on Prime for some time and the gas flowed backwards. I'm pretty sure it's the second one as I remember one occasion where I left it on Prime for a few hours (my first carbureted anything). I currently have a cup under the petcock and will see if anything leaks out of it, but I am doubtful that is the problem. So I'm looking for some advice on what to do now. I've changed the oil twice already, so it's only been 500 miles or so since the last change, so any gas in the oil is since then. And the oil just faintly smells like gas. It took a few attempts to smell anything like gas. Should I just change the oil, call it good, not do the 3x3 rejet and use the warranty if needed? Or could this be something much bigger and I should go back to the dealer?

very clean bike with pumper carb, full exhaust, new street tires, new d606 tires (on it now), Spain new off road front tire, black plastic kit and all the factory parts. new Uninstalled thumper talk case savers. I bought this bike a few months ago with big plans, but my first trip ended with a friend crashing and getting injured. this makes twice i'very carried friends on rides that ended in them losing time at work from an injury. I just don't have anyone I trust not to get hurt to ride with. I paid 2500 for the bike and want the same for it. I've spent a few hundred dollars on it so I think it's fair.

  8. Hello, I am new to thumpertalk. I bought a used drz 400 a month ago. A week ago my bike didn't start anymore. The battery was empty, so I recharged it but the same thing happened again 2 days later. So I bought a new battery because I thought the old one was bad. The same thing happened again with the new battery. So I looked on thumbertalk for any solutions. It seems that the battery doesn't get charged when the bike is running. After checking the battery with a multimeter I get only 12,4 volt on my battery even if the motor is on and I am going up to 3000rpm. There are a few things that could be damaged or faulty. The adapter connecting the cables to the battery could be corroded. I checked for that but it seems to be fine. I looked at the fuse but there doesn't seem to be any damage. The rectifier was tested with a multimeter and it seems to be ok too. The only thing that is left is the stator and after checking with the multimeter it seems to be the problem since I don't get the same readings for the 3 different pins. So I removed the stator from my bike but after inspecting it it seems to be ok. No coils are burnt (or at least it seems like the stator is in a good condition). I made a couple of photos for you to see it for yourself. I don't have much experiences with these kind of things so I am not sure if I should I replace it or not or if the problem is somewhere else. Any help would be welcome. Thanks for your replies.
  9. Im having problems starting my 09 drz 400s. At first i think my starter solenoid was going because sometimes nothing would happen when i hit the starter button, but then it would start when i smacked the side cover next to the solenoid. i rode one more day like that only stalling and restarted a couple times. Now the bike wont start at all with the starter. The starter sounds like spins and cranks fine but it just wont start. But you can roll start it everytime so what could that mean. My friend said something similar happened to him on his trx 450r and it was his starter gear?
  10. What all do I need in order to convert a drz 400 s into a drz 400sm or supermoto or whatever you want to call it. I know I would need wheels and tires but I really don't know a good brand of wheel, what kind of wheel or what size, where to get wheels, what kind of tires. Would I need wheel bearings and brake disk or would it come with the wheels? Should I get different sprockets?
  11. Hello everyone, I am trying to find a cheap replacement for the stock DRZ400sm gas cap. Zeta has one but it requires the inners from the original. I bought another gas tank to use for the woods but it didnt come with a gas cap. Looking for something inexpensive that i wont have to use the inners from my other cap for. I just cant bring myself to spend the 100+ on one off of ebay. I dont care if it locks or not either? Any ideas????

2001 DRZ400S with 6800 miles on it. Also on Craigslist at https://boston.craigslist.org/nwb/mcy/6161569078.html THIS BIKE IS PART OF A SET or can be sold separately (see my other adds for the DR200SE, Motorcycle trailer, and Toyota Truck(s)). We are leaving the country, so if you want a bike for you and your spouse or kid... this is your bargain. Make me an offer on all three or four. It has been well used, but maintained and kept under cover. I haven't done extensive carb/engine/exhaust mods since it runs great. Comes with extra set of rims and tires. One setup is for street and another setup for dirt. Rear rims have the appropriate size sprocket for the tires and I have two front sprockets as well (changes the top and low speed considerably). Takes about 20 minutes to switch between street and dirt. I installed a Happy Trails rack with soft and hard pannier that can be included or sold separately. It has hand guards and tinny front blinkers (I got sick of replacing the factory blinker from hitting trees). Has a beefy skid plate installed. I have some random extras that go with the bike as well (oil and filters). Depending on your head size, you could also get a helmet or two for free. This dike gets 50 mpg on dirt or road and is rock solid. Includes a new lithium battery. Fired up on the first push of the starter this year. The bike is in Maine, but can come down to Boston with a little notice (I travel between Maine and Boston). I am not in a hurry to sell, so don't low ball an offer. Cash in hand to test ride

  14. I thought I'd share how I'm able to use all the fuel in my IMS 4 gal tank. I connected a 1/4 in(?) fuel line to the reserve pickup of the stock (U.S.) DRZ400e petcock with a jetski/snowmobile style weighted and screened fuel pickup on the end (Dapco 11962). That runs down into the bottom of the left wing of the tank. The fuel line just inserts snugly into the reserve hole of the petcock. (The aftermarket petcock I tried did not work for this because the reserve pickup is not isolated from the "on" standpipe and so it would suck air instead of fuel.) This setup will get all but about 12 oz of fuel out of the tank since the very bottom of the "wing" is below the level of the carburetor. To get the last 12 oz of fuel, I took a schrader valve off a bicycle tube and removed the rubber off the bottom end of it with a wire wheel. This inserts into the end of the vent tube of the fuel cap. 15 pumps from my hand mtb pump gives about 1 psi of head pressure in the tank which will allow me to use all but 1/2 oz of fuel. I just keep the schrader valve in my toolkit for emergency use. I've had this setup about a month now. I'll report back if I have any issues but I've run it down to empty a couple times now and it's worked great! The only issue I have now is the On standpipe is a bit tall. I have about 90 miles remaining when I switch to reserve ;-) Left "wing" only fuel quantity in US galTotal fuel quantity in U.S. galParts used. I did use the screen from the aftermarket petcock I bought since my OEM screens were shot. That blue fuel line just holds it on the standpipe.
  15. i have a 2002 drz400s with the stock tail light. the running light works but when i go to press the brakes the light doesnt get brighter. ive changed the bulb out and it is still the same. when i turn the parking light on the light does get brighter. ive tried jiggling around some wires but no luck. ive read some other threads saying it could be a switch but im not sure on how to check if the switch is bad. Thanks in advance
  16. Hi guys ! My bike is a 2003 DRZ 400 S. I'm looking for a wiring harness for that bike. That seems quite simple... but : I first bought a 2003 DRZ 400 E (electric start) harness from a US seller on eBay, but unfortunately the small harness CDI plug doesn't fit my CDI unit (2 female connectors on the harness, 4 male connectors on my CDI unit). I thought it was because the E model harness does not fit the S model, or because the US bike model harness does not fit a european model. So... I bought a DRZ 400 S harness, from an Italian seller this time... and this harness... still doesn't fit... Same small CDI plug problem I watched DRZ 400 CDI units pictures on the internet, and it seems that all CDI units I saw have 4 connectors on the small plug... so I'm pretty lost. Maybe it would be easier for me to by a new CDI unit but... from what bike ??? So guys, do you know why there is different types of CDI small plugs... and different wiring harness CDI plugs ? Thanks a lot ! JP.
  17. 2003 drz400 not starting! Heres what ive checked: Getting fuel(smell, wet plug, visible coming out of pipe) Getting spark(bright blue) Compression Valves are in spec and passed leak down test Timing is spot on and i replaced the CDI box Ive poured oil down the cylinder twice with no luck. It will crank and crank and every once in a while a small pop will come out of the exhaust but nothing more. The bike was backfiring when i parked it in december and i replaced the stator let it sit for awhile longer and for the past few weeks ive been trying to get it started. Please help! Iheard theres a spring by the cam that could be bad allowing a valve to be opened too fast or too slow? Not sure what that is though Mods: FCR flat style carb, MRD racing pipe (this is my first post here but ive been looking at any thread i could find)
  18. Hello all! I am looking into traveling the Trans America Trail on my DRZ400E. Starting in Rhode Island, ending in Southern California; returning East on RT66. [~6'000 miles dirt, and then ~4,000 miles road return trip] 2003 DRZ400-E ~6k miles: total on bike - 5k miles: lightly ridden, never seen dirt - 0.7k miles: %100 hard off road [past year] Frequent Oil changes, Air Filter changes {again, well maintained but ridden hard the past year} Front and Rear Suspension rebuilt, carburetor rebuilt all last year Stock everything except FMF power bomb header and exhaust muffler, and Vapor Trail Tech , lights + fork socks Expected Maintenance: Top End Rebuild, Timing, Valves adjusted [Have not done compression test, but i would expect new top to be necessary] obvious things such as Brake Pads, Fluids, Chain/Sprockets, Tries, Heavy Tubes Does This Bike Seem Worthy Of Such A Trip? Or am i better off selling to find a newer model?
