  1. I'll try to keep this short with as much detail as possible.. Bike was running hot and coolant was coming out of the overflow, then it stopped, and then started again. Coolant probably had 10 hours on it so it was fairly fresh. Stopped riding for a few minutes and then my electric start was acting as if my battery was dead, eventually got it to kick and start up to get it to the garage. Wouldn't kick after a few minutes so I hooked the battery up to my charger and it fired right up and got a lot of white smoke (it appeared). Revved it a bit in case it was just moisture since I had just been riding a stream (only 6 inches deep or so no water should have gotten into the exhaust system) but smoke continued. First instinct said head gasket so I drained the coolant and it was very low and had some black specks.. after draining the oil, it still looked brand new and there appeared to be no coolant whatsoever in it.. Removed the spark plug and it had a small amount of oil on it. Even though it is at least burning coolant, does this sound like piston ring and not a head gasket failure? Do you think it is the head gasket and the coolant was just burning off quickly and that's why I'm not seeing it in the oil? I have had a little smoke on initial start up for a little but I figured it was from running fuel rich but now I'm thinking it was burning coolant off the whole time. Any ideas? Thanks!
  2. Previous owner used some sort of nasty sealer on 2000 KTM 125 headgasket. Razor blade would not touch it beyond this. I had 2 headgaskets out of 5 heads that were stuck this bad. Suggestions?
  3. Working on my buddy’s 2017 Ktm 250xc-f. With 67 hrs on it. For a while now we’ve been smelling coolant . We saw a drip near hoses above exhaust. So we tighten up or replaced anything that looked bad. .. just last night he started it and we smelled again so we looked closely and noticed it leaking from the valve cover gasket . I pulled the cover and there was traces of coolant all around cams and can caps. Not leaking bad enough to make oil milky though or doesn’t look very low in rads after 1 ride. I was assuming head gasket so we tore it down but I’m now seeing any imperfections that stand out. Anyone got any ideas ???
  4. New to top end rebuilding. Ordered a wiseco top end rebuild kit. 100mm piston. 100mm rings. But the head gasket is 101mm. Is this an error or is there something I don't know about 650L top ends? Or if it is an error, is a 101mm head gasket close enough?
  5. Hi, I’m new on this forum. I couldn’t find any threads with this specific issue but apologies for any duplication... I have had a lot of different bikes and there seems to be less information for this bike than any other I have owned so I thought I would try and get some help here... I just bought a used, 2001 DRZ 250 and noticed oil collecting on the front left side of the engine. I cleaned it and changed the oil and started investigating today. It appears to be coming from where the top and bottom end meet (gasket)? But the strange thing is there actually appears to be a “gap” that the oil is coming from. It is rather large to believe a gasket was meant to cover in the first place (see photo) ...can anyone tell me if this is part of the gasket missing from this area or...if this is by design somehow? I am losing enough oil from it I want to repair it before riding it. I have done top end work before on my yz125 (2 stroke) but never on a 4 stroke. Any thoughts? Thank you!! Danielle/Las Vegas
  6. 2005 husaberg fe 650e was running strong in glamis. After a decent 4-5 minute rally thru the dunes on day 2 I had the bike at idle waiting for other riders. Then I was engulfed in a white exhaust cloud. Coolant in the oil and oil coming out the exhaust. Blown head gasket? Cracked head? Any ideas? Or similar experiences? Thanks.
  7. 2010 KTM 250sx with newly plated cylinder, new piston, stock head. I am at sea level and I am not trying to mess with different compression by using different gaskets. I'm doing a top end rebuild and the Pro-X gasket kit I ordered came with 3 gaskets of varying thicknesses. Which one(s) should I use? I measured with digital calipers. Thin Green: .03 Black: .04 Thick Green: .08 Thanks for saving me yet again.
  8. I am having a few problems with my rm85 #1- it almost feels like it is running on choke in first and second gear. I believe this is due to the fact that a.) the plastic linkage on my powervalve is obliterated. b.) I believe my governor gear is also bead because whenever I pull off the powervalve cover, the rod going into the case on the gear won’t move up or down when revved, but is very easy to move by hand. Almost feels like it isn’t attached to anything. #2- (building on #1) first and second gear feels very low on power. I was under the impression that an 85 two stroke would be a lot more powerful than a125 four stroke which is what I used to have. I believe this problem is also linked to #1 but I am just not sure yet. In 3, 4, 5, and 6 gear it feels perfectly fine, but in 1st and 2nd I feel like I should be able to pop a wheelie pretty easily but just can’t. #3- (also very likely linked to #1 and 2) the throttle feels very sluggish when I turn it in about the first 1/4. When I try to flick it all the way, it seems as if it will bog out for a split second but it picks itself back up. #4- I have a mysterious leak of coolant somewhere around my powervalve- I’m thinking it could be the o ring on the cylinder head is bad. Other than these issues, it runs pretty well, I would say a little on the rich side because it does like to leak a bit of oil from the exhaust, but hopefully I can fix that with the clip on the needle. Keep in mind though my descriptions may not be entirely accurate because I’ve only ever had four strokes. Anyways, if there is anything you think would help, just let me know please-thanks in advance!
  9. First off, just wanted to say that I've searched for my particular issue beforehand. Didn't see anything posted quite like it. So here I am. 2013 DRZ-400S/SM Conversion. Not sure whats going on. Recently moved to Michigan from Cali in November 2019. Bike ran perfect before the move. Its only got 3700 miles on it. Oil was changed after installing a Q4/Powerbomb, FCR39, and installing stage 2 cams. Although I did switch one of the cams back to stock. Can't remember which though (pretty sure it was the intake). I know I'm supposed to change the oil again after 500 miles with the new cam/s but I had only put on around 375 miles before it starting smoking in the front. I also had the headers wrapped for some ungodly reason (not gunna lie I actually really digged the look). Replaced coolant/oil when I put in the cams. Coolant is still topped up. Just drained oil, doesnt really look/smell like any coolant is in it. Tried smelling the coolant but since ive got oil all over me I cant really tell. Reservoir is clean, no oil. Anyways yea, IDK. White smoke coming from header u-bend area, possibly where it connects to engine not entirely sure. All the headgasket posts I've read, its coming out of the exhaust. No white smoke coming out of my pipe. Bike has no issues starting, not overheating. I bought a headgasket kit from cometic anyways (do they always come with a head/base gasket?), but I just want to hear you're guys thoughts before I tear my head off. Both of them haha. Thanks for reading this post and extending a bit of your expertise. Im a noob, but Im trying to learn.
  10. hello ppl. question: what are the proper ways to analyse if the head gasket is blown or not (without actual disassembly?) I have 2000 year WR400F (the small size tank version). recently I boiled the water, I have a radiator cap temp gauge 1.3 bar: it said, over 100 degree celsius, I heard the boiling water bubbling in the water tank at the back wheel, I immediately stopped and waited to cool to 50 celsius. (we have winter now, plus 2 degree almost freezing, but we had a HUGE amount of mud so the bike was hot) before that where I noticed the bubbling and stopped to cool, I probably made a mistake.. I wanted to "escape" from a total muddy field and forced the bike 1st gear high rev through mud for a few minutes :-( (must say the high rev back wheel in huge mud worked well, analog to aquaplaning, I was able to fly above the mud instead of wobbling side to side..) so, you know the questions. what can I check there. white smoke in exhaust? exactly what scenario and how? is it hard to kick when cold? sign of coolant water flooded engine? do I loose coolant after a short ride? mark the coolant level in small plastic trank with sharpie and compare? what to see in oil dipstick? bubbles? foam? etc? pls help us out with clever tips. THX!!!

  12. I just bought a 2019 and brought it home and checked the oil again and took a closer look at it and smells like fuel and it’s also brown/milky need input on what to do starts and idles perfectly fine seller claimed he changed oil after every ride thanks for any input
  13. I just got done replacing the head gasket and rings on my 2008 ktm exc and when I started it up for the first time it was blowing a lot of white smoke out the exhaust and even continued for a minute after shutting the bike off. I know thats typically a sign of a bad gasket but I just replaced it. I torqued all the bolts down corrrectly and I saw no problem with the head. Could it be something with the water pump? Or maybe i still screwed something up when putting it back together.
  14. 2009 DRZ400SM It's my first time replacing a headgasket so I'm a little perplexed by the parts I ordered. I got the headgasket (not pictured as I don't have any questions about it), but these others I'm not too sure about. 1. Top left is the old cylinder/crankcase gasket, and to the right is the one from the kit. However, the old one is the typical 3-ply, and all I got in the kit is this card-material one. Should I use it? And is it meant to replace the 3-ply one or supplement it? 2. This kit also includes a cam chain tensioner gasket (bottom right), but there wasn't one on the bike before. Should I throw it on there just to be safe, or will that extra material mess with the tensioner's auto-setting? 3. What in the hell are all of the pieces in this little bag? I know kits are sometimes universal and contain unnecessary parts, but I just want to make sure I don't skip anything I should be replacing.
  15. So, looking for a little wisdom. I just rebuilt my bike last night and finished at 12:30 this morning. Last night i wanted to make sure i could get the bike to fire up and make sure everything is okay and begin the break in. As luck would have it, the HG is leaking coolant. what would y'all recommend i do. I have a cosmetic gasket because i have a cylinder works 269cc. P.S. it was running for 15 minuets with me modulating the throttle when i noticed it. It was a VERY small little line but its still leaking coolant with less than 20 minutes in the the motor. Thanks -Brandon
  16. I had recently bought a brand new 2018 CRF250R and the first few times starting it up I noticed small amounts of white smoke coming out of the exhaust when it was cold. Later that day, I had accidentally overheated it and some coolant overflowed, I filled it back up and continued to ride it and it worked perfectly fine. Whenever I start the bike from cold, some white smoke continues to come out and the exhaust is black inside. Also, not sure if it is from the weather currently but on the inside of the exhaust it seems a bit wet right after start up. Not sure what is going on
  17. Hey folks, since I have a little bit of leaking head gasket, how many of you ride with leaking head gasket? It's really hard In my region to find guys who can fix it professionally, I decided to ride with leaking gasket, no coolant loss after 2 training hours, no oil loss, fan works, any quick fix ideas????
  18. I'm in the process of organising the bits and pieces to fit a 270 kit to my sons 92 XR250. My dilemma is the head gasket. I've been told the best option is a cometic gasket to suit, but I haven't found where I can buy one of these in Australia yet, or the part#. My options as I see it are: 1/ Source the Cometic gasket 2/ Buy a Wiseco top end gasket kit (WS5425 to suit 75.5 to 78mm bores) 3/ Buy an 84/85 XR250R gasket as they had a 75mm bore and would only be 1mm difference as per using a std head gasket on the 84/85 with a 1mm overbore. Does anyone know if they are a direct fit other than the bore size? 4/ Buy a standard gasket, draw up in cad and have it laser cut out of copper. Can anyone weigh in and help out?
  19. All, Another question about my 2001 DRZ400e. As detailed in another thread, I recently got my head back from Fastheads for a valve job. I also installed a new piston and rings while keeping my existing cylinder. The bike finally starts and runs! Initially I noticed a frothy white oily mixture dripping from the end of the valve cover vent hose. I pulled the valve cover and didn't see any issues so I was hoping it was something leftover in the hose prior to the rebuild. I went to drain the oil and it was very thin and almost watery- grey in color. I could not see green coolant in the oil and it wasn't milky white, but it was definitely thin. When I ran it between my fingers you could tell it was watery. I drained the coolant and it had white bubbles in it - no evidence of oil. I also removed the hose off the water pump and again, green coolant with no evidence of oil. No white smoke out of exhaust. Runs clean. The head gasket I used was new as was the base gasket. Before I tear it down again I was hoping for some suggestions. thanks
  20. Hi, I have a 04 KLR 650. the clutch started to slip pretty bad so I opened her up had a look, yep look pretty burnt so put back together and got new clutch plates and changed them, after was back together and going again 1st test ride I noticed water dripping from the weep hole so I went to mechanic he said was the water pump seal, got a new one and put it in, pulling off the clutch case swell to check behind pump for anything. put it back together started it up, instantly milky oil, and alot of it. pulled it apart again cleaned it all checked it all put back together. now when I fill up radiator it drops level very quick after a couple of top ups u can see the oil level rise till window is full. undo sump plug first out is 100% coolant then oil. I am not starting the engine at all and as quick as u can fill radiator it leaks into oil. was running perfect before the clutch went . I have cleaned it all put back together but didn't out water in it , it started for couple minutes , no drama didn't run rough idled fine . Any ideas why water is getting in so quick? thanks
  21. KLX250s 2009 I want to rebuild the top end, - new valves - new head gasket - new rings Can I do it without removing the motor? how much work does it take & do I need any special measuring tools?
  22. Hello I just bought a drz400 and I’m wondering what this coolant issue can be. I haven’t had time to go anywhere yet so I have only been able to ride around in my backyard so only 1st and 2nd gear. However I noticed after a quick ride that the coolant overflow get fluid in it and when I shut off the bike their is a slow coolant leak coming from the bottom (still haven’t found where). I have no white smoke from exhaust or coolant in oil (just did oil change) so I am unsure to decide whether it is a head gasket yet. I did notice however when the coolant was going in the overflow it had some bubbles. And when the bike is cold all fluid in overflow goes back inside to radiator. Any guesses on what this could be?
  23. I have a DRZ 400 that was bored out by the previous owner. He said that it was bored out to 416cc. I have checked the valves and I have a zero clearance intake valve. I was wondering about the head gasket for this bike when I put it all back together. Just trying to get all my parts together. Do I use a stock stock gasket? I know for the big bore kits there is specific gaskets for the kits I have a feeling it is not a kit though. New to this forum thing any advice would be appreciated.
  24. I just purchased a 2008 YZ250F. The bike started first kick when i got it and i was informed that it had recently been rebuilt. After a few days of having it i came to find out it was extremely hard to start. I have had to bump it to start and when i do white smoke comes out of the exhaust. After bumping it i’m usually able to kick it over with the hot start engaged. The white smoke will come out of the exhaust and then seem to disappear after a while. Is this due to a blown head gasket? I’m also losing coolant.
  25. I cranked my bike up today and rode it a bit ('06 YZ250F). There was some white smoke when I first cranked it up and it went away shortly. I assumed it was because it was cold outside, as the smoke had no distinctive smell and, as stated, it went away shortly. I'm just adding that in case it has something to do with my issue. Anyways, a few hours after my ride I went into the garage and pulled off my pressure cap just to take a routine look at the coolant. The coolant wasn't even visible at first but after shaking the bike around a bit I could see some at the bottom (THANK GOD). I refilled the radiator and put the cap back on and then started the bike up. No smoke, no smells, and the bike runs mint as usual. The bike had been sitting for 3 weeks before this, if that has anything to do with it. WHY is my radiator running out of coolant? I could see no water on the engine (sign of a leak) and my hoses appear fine. The pressure cap looks a bit dry rotted and is difficult to get off and on. However, wouldn't I notice if it was faulty? ANY help/ideas appreciated. Please let me know why my bike is drinking coolant! I can answer any questions as needed.
