  1. Previous owner used some sort of nasty sealer on 2000 KTM 125 headgasket. Razor blade would not touch it beyond this. I had 2 headgaskets out of 5 heads that were stuck this bad. Suggestions?
  2. Working on my buddy’s 2017 Ktm 250xc-f. With 67 hrs on it. For a while now we’ve been smelling coolant . We saw a drip near hoses above exhaust. So we tighten up or replaced anything that looked bad. .. just last night he started it and we smelled again so we looked closely and noticed it leaking from the valve cover gasket . I pulled the cover and there was traces of coolant all around cams and can caps. Not leaking bad enough to make oil milky though or doesn’t look very low in rads after 1 ride. I was assuming head gasket so we tore it down but I’m now seeing any imperfections that stand out. Anyone got any ideas ???

    650L top end

New to top end rebuilding. Ordered a wiseco top end rebuild kit. 100mm piston. 100mm rings. But the head gasket is 101mm. Is this an error or is there something I don't know about 650L top ends? Or if it is an error, is a 101mm head gasket close enough?

    KLX 351 Problems

Hey all, In need of help ASAP I recently purchased a 351 big bore kit from Bill Blue. Have heard so many great reviews from others who have done the same to their bikes. Watched all the videos from Adventures in Real Life and MrDuhFactor (popular Youtubers who did the 351 bb kit to their bikes). Decided that I wanted to upgrade the bike since I am doing the Trans-American Trail in 5 weeks. did the whole nine yards of mods, pumper carb, dg exhaust, rebuilt head, stiffer clutch, and a few other little trinkets. finished putting it together and it fired right up and ran beautifully. Nearing the end of my break in miles I noticed it was having really hard starts and would cut out at high rpms once warm. Discovered that this was due to a blown head gasket. I assumed I got the wrong torque specs from the internet because when I pulled the head the gasket looked fine, so I called Bill and had him overnight me two new gaskets along with a list of torque specs. Well I just got it all back together and tried to run it. Barely ran at first, so I pulled the valve cover back off and discovered I was a tooth off on the chain. Fixed that and it sounded a lot better. But it won't stay at idle and and when I try to ride it, it cuts out hard past 4000 rpms. If I try and let it idle, it just dies. I feel like I've tried everything but nothing seems to work. I'm at a serious loss here. This is my only bike and I need it to run good for the TAT in 5 weeks. I am an auto mechanic so I'd like to think I'm not mechanically dumb :/ Getting pretty desperate though.
  5. So, looking for a little wisdom. I just rebuilt my bike last night and finished at 12:30 this morning. Last night i wanted to make sure i could get the bike to fire up and make sure everything is okay and begin the break in. As luck would have it, the HG is leaking coolant. what would y'all recommend i do. I have a cosmetic gasket because i have a cylinder works 269cc. P.S. it was running for 15 minuets with me modulating the throttle when i noticed it. It was a VERY small little line but its still leaking coolant with less than 20 minutes in the the motor. Thanks -Brandon
  6. I just got done replacing the head gasket and rings on my 2008 ktm exc and when I started it up for the first time it was blowing a lot of white smoke out the exhaust and even continued for a minute after shutting the bike off. I know thats typically a sign of a bad gasket but I just replaced it. I torqued all the bolts down corrrectly and I saw no problem with the head. Could it be something with the water pump? Or maybe i still screwed something up when putting it back together.
  7. KLX250s 2009 I want to rebuild the top end, - new valves - new head gasket - new rings Can I do it without removing the motor? how much work does it take & do I need any special measuring tools?

Alot of water in the oil

Hi, I have a 04 KLR 650. the clutch started to slip pretty bad so I opened her up had a look, yep look pretty burnt so put back together and got new clutch plates and changed them, after was back together and going again 1st test ride I noticed water dripping from the weep hole so I went to mechanic he said was the water pump seal, got a new one and put it in, pulling off the clutch case swell to check behind pump for anything. put it back together started it up, instantly milky oil, and alot of it. pulled it apart again cleaned it all checked it all put back together. now when I fill up radiator it drops level very quick after a couple of top ups u can see the oil level rise till window is full. undo sump plug first out is 100% coolant then oil. I am not starting the engine at all and as quick as u can fill radiator it leaks into oil. was running perfect before the clutch went . I have cleaned it all put back together but didn't out water in it , it started for couple minutes , no drama didn't run rough idled fine . Any ideas why water is getting in so quick? thanks

    Losing coolant, watery oil

All, Another question about my 2001 DRZ400e. As detailed in another thread, I recently got my head back from Fastheads for a valve job. I also installed a new piston and rings while keeping my existing cylinder. The bike finally starts and runs! Initially I noticed a frothy white oily mixture dripping from the end of the valve cover vent hose. I pulled the valve cover and didn't see any issues so I was hoping it was something leftover in the hose prior to the rebuild. I went to drain the oil and it was very thin and almost watery- grey in color. I could not see green coolant in the oil and it wasn't milky white, but it was definitely thin. When I ran it between my fingers you could tell it was watery. I drained the coolant and it had white bubbles in it - no evidence of oil. I also removed the hose off the water pump and again, green coolant with no evidence of oil. No white smoke out of exhaust. Runs clean. The head gasket I used was new as was the base gasket. Before I tear it down again I was hoping for some suggestions. thanks

    DRZ 400 Head Gasket Question

I have a DRZ 400 that was bored out by the previous owner. He said that it was bored out to 416cc. I have checked the valves and I have a zero clearance intake valve. I was wondering about the head gasket for this bike when I put it all back together. Just trying to get all my parts together. Do I use a stock stock gasket? I know for the big bore kits there is specific gaskets for the kits I have a feeling it is not a kit though. New to this forum thing any advice would be appreciated.
  11. hello ppl. question: what are the proper ways to analyse if the head gasket is blown or not (without actual disassembly?) I have 2000 year WR400F (the small size tank version). recently I boiled the water, I have a radiator cap temp gauge 1.3 bar: it said, over 100 degree celsius, I heard the boiling water bubbling in the water tank at the back wheel, I immediately stopped and waited to cool to 50 celsius. (we have winter now, plus 2 degree almost freezing, but we had a HUGE amount of mud so the bike was hot) before that where I noticed the bubbling and stopped to cool, I probably made a mistake.. I wanted to "escape" from a total muddy field and forced the bike 1st gear high rev through mud for a few minutes :-( (must say the high rev back wheel in huge mud worked well, analog to aquaplaning, I was able to fly above the mud instead of wobbling side to side..) so, you know the questions. what can I check there. white smoke in exhaust? exactly what scenario and how? is it hard to kick when cold? sign of coolant water flooded engine? do I loose coolant after a short ride? mark the coolant level in small plastic trank with sharpie and compare? what to see in oil dipstick? bubbles? foam? etc? pls help us out with clever tips. THX!!!

    Head gasket

2005 husaberg fe 650e was running strong in glamis. After a decent 4-5 minute rally thru the dunes on day 2 I had the bike at idle waiting for other riders. Then I was engulfed in a white exhaust cloud. Coolant in the oil and oil coming out the exhaust. Blown head gasket? Cracked head? Any ideas? Or similar experiences? Thanks.
  14. Hi, I’m new on this forum. I couldn’t find any threads with this specific issue but apologies for any duplication... I have had a lot of different bikes and there seems to be less information for this bike than any other I have owned so I thought I would try and get some help here... I just bought a used, 2001 DRZ 250 and noticed oil collecting on the front left side of the engine. I cleaned it and changed the oil and started investigating today. It appears to be coming from where the top and bottom end meet (gasket)? But the strange thing is there actually appears to be a “gap” that the oil is coming from. It is rather large to believe a gasket was meant to cover in the first place (see photo) ...can anyone tell me if this is part of the gasket missing from this area or...if this is by design somehow? I am losing enough oil from it I want to repair it before riding it. I have done top end work before on my yz125 (2 stroke) but never on a 4 stroke. Any thoughts? Thank you!! Danielle/Las Vegas
  15. 2010 KTM 250sx with newly plated cylinder, new piston, stock head. I am at sea level and I am not trying to mess with different compression by using different gaskets. I'm doing a top end rebuild and the Pro-X gasket kit I ordered came with 3 gaskets of varying thicknesses. Which one(s) should I use? I measured with digital calipers. Thin Green: .03 Black: .04 Thick Green: .08 Thanks for saving me yet again.
