  1. Hello! I need some help with diagnosing my motorcycle. I have a 2000 XR650L. The previous owner told me that at one point the bike was not given oil changes and the piston was damaged. The piston was bored out making it a "660". From what I understand no problems from there on. However, recently I was cruising at 65 on the highway when my chain suddenly broke. The whip from the chain broke open the air box, ripped off the slider and chain guards, and tore up the back sprocket. So, I installed a new airbox, air filter, new front sprocket, rear sprocket and a new chain. I thought I was back in business and was testing the bike out. Everything was running fine for about ten miles going below 55. When i tried to bring the bike up to higher speeds it totally lost compression at 65 or it just completely bogged down. I pulled over to inspect the bike and everything seemed fine, the bike never shut off. Afterward when I took off it would begin to bog down again at 35mph, especially when i would throttle it quickly. I have tried the bike one other time since then and would notice it skipping or bogging down even at 25, again especially when i try to throttle it quickly, This is my first motorcycle so I am on a steep learning curve and do not have much knowledge to come up with a diagnosis and solutions. If anyone has any ideas and suggestions it would be very much appreciated!! I can wait to get this baby dialed in again! Thank you
  2. so today I was going to go out for a ride, almost got to my buddies house, when the bike died, thought it was maybe out of gas, so i pulled in the clutch and went on reserve. I was still rolling so i popped it up into 3rd to try to roll start it, but no luck. stopped and pulled of to the side to try and kick it. the engine was siezed. this had happened before once and it ran fine after i let it cool down. so i let it sit and got a cup of coffee. i came back out to start her up, but i couldnt find tdc. the kick start would turn and turn but no hard point. it was harder to kick through the cycles and it has a weird squeek sound from the cylinder. any ideas on what happened or what the problem is??? it was running just fine 2 weeks ago i took it out on a 6 hr ride no overheating nothing. i has just been out of service because i cracked the tank in a biff about 3 rides ago.
  3. Hey legends, So after successfully rebuilding my 2003 WR450F (Bottom and top end) with an 06 crank and flywheel upgrade as well as a 480CC Athena big bore...Everything was going well... On my 5th or 6th ride, the motor was well worn in and everything was running strong...I was out riding with mates when I noticed 5th gear start jumping in and out...It got worse and worse till the point where I did not use 5th gear anymore...At first i thought it might be the clutch but its only in 5th gear it does it .. :/ I did a little research and some people think ive damaged something inside the gearbox... Can someone help me out on exactly what I need to do to get this fixed? I really don't want to have to disassemble the engine again :'( Please help Thanks Ben @grayracer513 Can you help at all??
  4. I recently bought a 1983 CR125R and it had not been started for 4 years and wont hit the powerband in first or second gear but will in every other gear

  6. I've been riding now with my husband for two years. I recently moved up to a 2004 Honda 250. Problem is now with a bigger bike, longer rides and learning to slid on the seat I'm now really uncomfortable. I have such bad chaffing...everywhere. I've tried everything I can think of! Even started stealing my husband's boxer briefs to ride in. What do the other women here do to help protect sensitive areas?!
  7. So... i recently purchased a used 2006 ktm exc 125 and the first rides were awesome, the bike was very snappy just like a 2 stroke should be.. yesterday the bike had a normal low end but absolutely no top end power. it won't hit that powerband...it seems like it has some kind of rev limiter. i think maybe its time to do a top end rebuild and check those powervalves and perhaps clean the carb and put a new filter in... any suggestions???
  8. 12. I was an idiot and accidentally over-tightened my spark plug on my KX450. In doing so I put a slight indention right in the center of the piston that you can see in the attached photo. I was wondering if this is enough damage to warrant me buying an entirely new piston? Or will I be okay to continue using this one?
  13. Hello all, i just recently purchased my first dirk bike! I bought a 2007 KTM xcf-w, and boy does she run like a dream! Theres just one problem, i have a small oil leak. ive located where the leak is and i believe its just a gasket thats leaking and needs redone. However, there are wires running in where the leak is happening so i am maybe thinking the leak is caused by the wires allowing oil to seep by? I added a picture so maybe some of you mechanics out there can point me in the right direction. I am going to order a whole gasket kit for my bike unless someone thinks it could be something else entirely. Thanks in advance for your recommendations and your time!
  14. I have recently bought a YZ 250 2001 (1700 $)and the plastics looked cracked and dry rotted for lack of a better term. Under the graphics they were mint condition literally brand new looking. Is there any way that I could restore them so that I won't need to special order tank shrouds. I already ordered a rear fender for 17.99 it looked beyond repair to me. I tried the razor blade trick but that just took way to long. Thanks Guys this is my first post so roast easy. least its a two stroke right? Runs great and tons of power.
  15. This is going to be very long winded, but I know there are people who know a lot more about 2 strokes than I do that I need help from, so I want to provide as much detail as possible. I bought a 2003 KX 250 about six months ago. When I first got it, I replaced the air filter, cleaned the carburetor, and put in a new spark plug. Up until about a month ago, that was all I had done to the bike besides minor stuff that doesn't relate to the actual performance of the bike. It rode hard and fast since I had bought it without a hiccup (besides some fouled plugs), but on a ride about a month ago, I had been riding it decently hard for about an hour and a half when I tried to really open up coming up a slight hill and it sounded like the bike hit a rev limiter. It still had all of its low end power and otherwise ran perfectly fine, but it was like it could not get into the powerband. After keeping off the pipe and letting it coast as much as I could on the way back home, it seemed to get a bit better, where it would just get there, but any farther and it would sputter like crazy and bog. Just two weeks ago, I came to the conclusion (to the best of my knowledge at least) that the power valve was sticking shut, and since I was going to take the cylinder off to clean the power valve anyways, I decided to rebuild the top end. After cleaning the power valve, replacing the piston, and repacking the silencer, I broke it in nice and good and let it rip. It sounded crisp and had all of its power everywhere it was supposed to have it. I felt like I was riding a new bike, so I enjoyed that for about half an hour. Next day, I hop on it and warm it up, take off and it bogs when I get to the powerband. Every time I've gotten on it since, it's a different story. One minute, it's bogging like heck, I sit for a few seconds to calm my frustration, take off and it rips with a sound like that of angels singing. It always runs exactly the same at low rpms, but very different at high rpms. I hate to admit it, but I cleaned the power valve without completely disassembling it, so I think that may be my problem. I'd just hate to tear the bike apart again, thoroughly clean the power valve assembly, put it back together and then my problem still not be fixed. Not sure if it's important, but it does foul plugs quite a bit. It has since I got it though and it ran good before this problem started. Any help is appreciated. Thanks for reading.
  16. Hello all and welcome to my first post. I've just acquired a DR-Z 400 E and without realising the difference between a Z400 (quad bike) and my humble DR-Z 400...I went and ordered a new Lexx MXE exhaust ...For a Z400 SO, nothing I can do as it's on it's way and I live all the way south in South Africa so I need to make it fit and the DR-Z 400 Lexx MXE from Australia is a whopping AUD400 Does anyone have any pearl necklaces of wisdom for me?? Anyone know the pipe difference (as I find comfort in the fact that the actual exhaust is the same)? Look forward to hearing from anyone out there. Cheers NotBlueSteel Cape Town
  17. My girlfriend and I just purchased two sr170tr bikes online. I put them both together, loctite bolts/screws with blue loctite, changed oil with 10w-40 non synthetic, oiled the air filter and filled them up with premium gas. My bike started after a couple kicks and is keeping idle/running fine. The second bike though has been extremely difficult to kick vs mine. It will occasionally kick but it stops/gets stuck so often you basically break your foot in the process. And when it does kick it has much more resistance in general. This is all based off of comparison with the working sr170tr. After many attempts to start the bike (checking spark plug, making sure wire connections are tight, and 100 difficult kicks) I noticed the manifold intake is cracked. Again this bike is new and never been started before so this was a major bummer... I have nearly zero experience with bikes and dont know how to go about this. Ive emailed the company that sent me the bikes about the broken manifold intake. But scratching my head about the difficult kick start issue. Will the broken intake have anything to do with the difficulty of kicking the engine? Thank you!
  18. It is time for me to do a top end on my 2012 KTM 200 XC-W. I went to the motorcycle shop to price up a top end, they asked me what grade piston is it that matches your cylinder. I had no idea about this, there are grades A, B and C and maybe more or less, all with 0.01mm differences, and it will say in my cylinder what piston to get. I have looked all over the internet and nothing has told be WHERE to find the marking to show me what size piston to get, im sure i could figure it out but what i really want to know is if i need to take the cylinder OFF to get to the markings. I have taken a photo of the markings that i can see on the outside of the cylinder if that's any help. Thanks
  19. Decided to try and put together a new ssr sr170tr today with zero experience. (Skip to the end if you want the issue in a nutshell) Everything went well until I attempted to put on the front tire and realize it wont fit into the front break caliper. I started to squeeze the front break lever to see if i could see the break pads open and close, and they looked already closed. Thats when youtube showed me theres plastic shoved into there, so in my attempt to pull out the plastic it had snapped between the break pads. I began to unscrew two screws that hold the break pads into place. Break pads fell out along with the plastic. I figured success. Then i screwed the break pads back into the caliper and put the tire back on which then i noticed the break pads are still closed. So i removed the tire again along with the break pads and began pumping the front break lever which showed the calipers will push out with every pump but dont go back in - forcing the breakpads to be closed... -so my question is did i break anything? Is there a way to reset/release the front break caliper so i can screw in the break pads and have room for my wheel? Confused why it only tightens with each pump and doesnt release. Thank you for your time
  20. Can someone please help I picked up a 1982 Husqvarna xc 125 for 50 bucks last week I'm trying to get the cylinder off I have removed the head the exost and carb but the cylinder will not co.e up out of case at one point in time the bike was under water and sized the motor what can I do or use to in stick it
  21. All right guys could use some help here. Last year I sold my motocross bike and decided I was going to convert my 2015 500 EXC into a more moto friendly setup. As I was doing so I started removing items I felt "unnecessary" (headlights, tail light, turn signals, etc) and put that stuff aside for when I wanted to put it back in street legal trim. Shortly after I had to move and put the bike in storage for a few months until I found a new place with a garage. So that brings us to now, I just pulled the bike out and decided to put all the dual sport stuff back on and make it street legal but can not get the turn signals to work. So here's the situation, Head light and tail/break light work, horn also works and everything is plugged in correctly but I suspect I might have gotten a bit trigger happy when removing the "unnecessary" components as I have found what appears to be a ground wire at the bottom of the bin I stored the removed parts in. I can't remember where this came from or why I cut the wire (see picture below) but I suspect this is the reason my turn signals aren't working. To add to my confusion, tucked behind the headlight I found a random female end of a bullet connector with nothing plugged into it and I'm not sure what would have gone there and if I removed that or it's just an extra accessory wire. The piece of wire I found that I cut has a female end on it doesn't plug in there :/ I also purchased the ktm service manual but the wiring diagram is so complicated I can't tell what is what. So if you own a 13- 15 500 exc or have knowledge in this area here's what I need to know... 1.What is the female bullet connector behind the headlight supposed to be used for? 2.Is the clipped black wire I found in my box the culprit for my faulty turn signals ? 3.If so, where does that wire go on the bike? pics below If you have any info that can help me figure this out please share and thanks for reading this, cheers!
  22. hi all, i have a 2007 Honda crf150rb that has an unsolvable hanging idle. bike has full fmf exhaust (powerbomb header and q4 muffler with spark arrestor taken out. you can turn the idle screw up and it will sit there and idle great but as soon as you touch the throttle the idle will hang very high and wont come back down unless i tap the kill switch a couple times. I have replaced the vacuum plate seal and installed in correctly and it did absolutely nothing. carb has been cleaned about 4 times before that. Jets are 135 main, 48 pilot and the others are stock. The throttle cables are not binding up i have checked this. I have tried the fuel screw turned really in really lean and turned out really rich. it made little difference except making it almost impossible to start. The screw is currently set at the factory specified 2 turns out. I have set and tuned the throttle position sensor to exactly what it should be. I've checked all around the engine for air leaks and have found none. Other than these issues the bike starts first kick and runs great. I feel like I've tried everything there is to try. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Luke
  23. So I did a valve shim adjustment on my 2009 YZ250f and followed my service manual and followed a video on YT. I got my clearances in spec and put a new spark plug in as well. I put everything back together and torqued the bolts to spec, as well as following the timing marks. Now the kick starter won't budge, it feels like something is in the way when I push down. I didn't try to force it because I don't want to damage anything. This bike has low hours and has been taken care of. I'd rather fix this myself than take it anywhere so I can learn from it, any help would be appreciated. I can attach images if needed

  25. Not sure if its been asked here or not, can't find anything that has a definite answer. I currently have an 09 RMZ 450 that I was able to pick up cheap. I want to uprage to a newer model (don't wanna spend the money for an 18 right now) but I hate air forks. I was wondering if the 09 forks are a direct fit into a 16-17 model or not? I think the triple clamps should be the same, just worried about the bottom linking up... Ive looked into the air to spring conversion kits but I have my suspension on the 09 valved and set perfect and would love to be able to put it in a newer model.
