  1. I'm tearing down my '06 CRF250X for winter prep. I checked the spark plug (see pics). I've rode with this plug for most of the summer. I'm thinking it's a bit rich, so for the other 250X owners out there, what jetting are you running/what do you think I should run? The only mods I've done is install the JD Jet Kit (165 main, 42 pilot, Red needle 4th clip, and thick o-ring), FMF Q4, and 4" x 4" hole in air box (with No Toil Super Flo Kit). The bike seems to run alright, but should I drop a few on the main jet?
  2. OK here goes... Picked up an 04 200 EXC few months back, needed some work to say the least, wont go into detail of all the things i've fixed on the bike just the current and most present issue I cant seem to fix... it is smoking IE blue smoke/lots of splooge to the point that at the end of a few hour's ride, it's out the tail pipe, running down the back and dripping onto the swing arm/rear break caliper and blue smoking quite a bit. When I first got it, it smoked more and smelled like shit. So first things first went to the carb, I live on the Oregon coast (elevation/temp reference) it's old dirty/stained but inside looks good, came with jetting pilot-45, main-178 needle: no idea what brand guessing stock in the 3rd clip, adjusted the float height due to it leaking gas when bike was upright no tilt with the gas on, Bought JD jet kit and running pilot-45, Main-185 and Needle is blue 3rd clip (JD's recommend specs for my bike @ my attitude). I have also replaced my Inner crankcase seal twice (First time I thought I messed up the O-ring so redid to make sure). I've rebuilt the top end/new piston (same thing) cleaned the PV, NOTE HERE that the PV has some issues, it seems to work fine but the screw that goes on top of the cylinder, down into the PV/flap would not come out preventing me from removing the flap to clean it, however it move's/ function's correctly, and has minimum clearance on both sides. One of the PV cover bolts that also works at the exhaust spring holder, was over torqued at some point (impact driver prob), or a result in a hard impact, the hole the bolt goes into is flailed/jared open a bit, not bad, not in the way of any function/ PV Gearing/hinge, it is not needed for that area to be air tight as their is also a breather that goes out of the PV so will not result in an "air leak" or loss in Top end PSI.... anyway... it's still smoking.... quite a bit.. now the bike itself rides fine I feel, the carb does puke gas when tilted over slightly/ hard to start (kick start) after flooded (like all bikes tho) I don't have any stalling/low idle issues outside of user error on clutch control. Honestly outside of it smoking as much as it does I would think nothing is wrong with it.. I have also tried raising the needle Clip to 2nd clip and it changed nothing at all, not even feel of the bike/response and have a new Spark plug I have yet to put on the bike. I have also "compromised" the crankcase Gasket (new one in the mail) while I was putting the Crankcase back on but that should do nothing with the exhaust just a little gear oil leak not relevant but throwing it out there. So I am at a loss... I've been toying with the idea of getting a Lectron carb... However... would hate to drop $400~$500 and the issue still persist, if it's a jetting/carb/float issue that would fix it and improve MPH/fuel consumption Or something with the PV? but I don't see the PV causing that much smoke/sploogee... I've ridden the bike normally/hard and nothing's happened but I don't want to keep pushing it and possibly clip the bike. Any ideas? "Oh help me 2 stroke community you're my only hope"
  3. Okay im not sure if this is a problem or not but it kinda bothers me. I have a 2004 yz250. I had jetting problems with it but I believe I have fixed it (in a way) the stock main jet was 178 and pilot was a 50. Stock needle at 2 clip position. That jetting ran fine for 2 years at 500ft elevation. Earlier this month it seems to sputter and bog at high rpms ans not hit the powerband and it would bog just riding bumpy trails too and hitting hills it would bog BAD! I checked reeds ans they are fine. I repacked the silencer and I checked power valves for carbon build up ans they seemed fine and it all moved good ans smooth. So I bought a JD jetting kit and the pilot jet i have in now is a 45 and it called for the main jet to be 172 and red needle at 3rd position for my elevation. I took it to the trails and it still was bogging at high rpms and riding bumpy trails. So I changed the main jet to a 168 it had in the kit and the top end power was fine after that it hit the powerband and stuff but low end it wasn't great so I moved the clip position from the 3rd to the first at the top to lean it out and it seemed to help. It doesn't bog low end or anything but it seems the first 1/4 throttle it tends to bog just a tad. So my question is how can I fix that little bog and is my jetting okay for what elevation im at? Is it too lean?? It seems to me some other people run their main jet at 172 for 500 ft elevation. Thank you for reading and your responses! I'll be sure to check here every now and then to get the problem fixed.
  4. Hey guys, I recently decided to do the 3x3 mod on my 19 drz400sm. For the first couple of days I ran the new jetting setup without cutting a hole in my air box. It was fine, but felt relatively stock still (power wise). I went ahead and cut the 3x3 in and then the cold start issues occurred. When I pull the choke out completely it’ll start right up as usual. But after a couple second the bike will begin to idle slower, then die. I’m constantly having to readjust the idle to compensate for lack of.. Air..? Fuel..? After getting past the cold starts the bike runs flawlessly. It leaves me to wonder if the bike is running too rich or lean. So I’ve been light on the throttle. Any tips for deciphering a rich or lean condition? Thanks Im located in Long Beach, California so I’m at sea level sometimes around 300ft above, current temp is around 60-85F. My bike has Stock pipe and carb. jd jet kit specs Main jet - 155 Pilot - 25 Blue needle at 3rd clip Fuel screw 2.5 turns out
  5. Hello all, I just got a 2017 drz 400sm that was stock with 615 miles when I bought it. I did the 3x3 and installed the JD jet kit with recommended setting for stock exhaust and correct altitude. The problem I'm having is the bike runs fine for a mile or so then sputters and dies completely. The I can get it started again if I set the fuel to prime and It'll go about a mile back to the house. Seems like it's running the bowl empty and not allowing gas to flow after. I've thought of tinkering with the fuel mixture screw but I don't want to do anything before I get input from someone who knows more than I. Any help is appreciated.
  6. I have a 2007 drz400 sm just had my top end redone (valves, rings, cylinder and can chain) by a reputable shop i took the engine out handed it over to them got it back and reinstalled it connected everything properly, I decided to get and fmf powerbomb header and power core 4 exhaust for it as well as a jed jet kit so i did the 3x3 mod myself i am no pro clearly but i do believe I installed the jet kit properly with all the proper mods but the thing just wont turn over has compression, spark and fuel is getting to the bowl for sure it has to be something with the jetting I believe it has the 25 pilot blue needle (clip in 4th position) and a 170 main jet... which is recommended for my elevation and mods i even pulled the starter jet and that was clean not sure where to go from here, any advice would be appreciated worst case is i bring it back to the shop but i feel like this is a simple fix and would like to try and get it started myself sorry for the rant but i am super frustrated lol, thanks
  7. Hey guys, I recently bought a 2001 DRZ400s with 5000 miles and I'm having some trouble jetting it properly even after buying and installing the JD jet kit. Important bits: The bike has a stock exhaust and I did the 3x3 airbox mod. Previously it had the 22.5 pilot, 162 main, and the fuel screw had been adjusted (brass removed but stock screw). With this setup it was a quick little bike, but it popped A LOT on deceleration and it missed a little on idle. Now I've installed the JD kit with 22.5 pilot, 150 main, extended screw at 2.5 turns out, and blue needle at 3rd position. Currently with this setup it feels noticeably slower but it seems to run better, if that makes sense at all. It idles well so I assume the pilot and fuel screw are adjusted properly and it doesn't pop at all now on decel, but it feels really down on power especially in the top end. When I go WOT and then back off a little it seems to accelerate a little more which leads me to believe the main jet is too SMALL, but I'm already at a 150 with stock exhaust...that said, it had a 162 and seemed more powerful. Huh. My next step is to pull the spark plug and see what it tells me, but I'm hoping someone has some input for me. Am I the only one the JD kit hasn't worked out for? Thanks, J
