  1. So I am trying to fit a new pair of size large Mobius X8 knee braces and am finding it hard to get the fit right. They seem on one hand too small, and another too big. I measured 6” from the center of my knee cap and then the circumference at that point to be a little over 21” which should put me squarely in the size large 20-22” range according to the Mobius fit chart. I am having two fit problems... 1. The inside of the brace where the pivot is hurts the inside of my knee right where my finger points in the bottom picture below, as if the brace is too narrow for the width of my knee joint. It’s okay when my knee is bent, but if I straighten my leg or try to walk, ouch it really squeezes my knee. 2. The “CCRS” wiring retainer is supposedly not supposed to be able to be drawn completely tight, though in my case I can tighten it all the way, per the pictures below, which suggests I need to go down a size. Worth nothing, I have the slimmest pad beneath the patella and the thickest pad on the CCRS thing, so changing pads won’t solve the problem. Any Mobius owners out there with advice would be greatly appreciated!
  2. I want to get knee braces and I'm willing to pay what I need to protect my knees as best as possible. I've looked at reviews and it's impossible to know which would work best for me without trying them on first. CTI braces seem to get very high marks so I would like to look seriously at them but I think they are a U.K. brand. Can I get them in the US? I've not had much luck finding anything here although I think I need to go to an ortho supplier. One thing though about CTI braces; they leave the knee exposed because there is no cap over the knee compared to other (more MC specific) brands. Would I need to wear knee guards on top of the knee braces? I'm willing to look at others too but the only way I can see to try different brands would be to order several and return what I don't want; through Revzilla for instance. Even though I'm in Philly and their store is here, they won't bring in merchandise unless I pay for it first. Maybe the only option. Anyone buy CTI braces in the US? Any other thoughts? Thanks
  3. Haven't had single comfortable ride with Web Pro Knee Braces. I wore them with ski socks (knee length) and Leatt knee brace pants. I put them by instruction, knee brace pants doesn't allow them to move around. After 30min track ride, red area (see picture) is sore, scratched and it leaves scaring. It can be caused by strap no3 due to squat movement. 2 strap is more on the calf but strap 3 when bending knees is right on tendon. Braces size matches my leg measurements. Could it be that they need to be worn with special long/density socks? Have other Web users experienced such discomfort?
  4. My old battered EVS Web braces have done a fair job of protecting my dicky knees, I did a pile of research before upgrading and hope this might help others if you are upgrading or getting knee braces for the first time. Keen to hear what others think and I can add relevant tips into this post. Video series about knee injuries and protection here. IS IT REALLY A KNEE BRACE? First, make sure your knee brace is really a knee brace and watch out for manufacturers trying to sell their basic knee guards as knee braces. EVS are the most blatant example of this at the moment. Most manufacturers won't do this, but beware of retailers slipping knee brace into the text of ads to try and deceive you. THE FIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING Similar to helmets, how well your knee braces fit is usually more important than the actual brand. Look around the forums and you will find guys saying Pod knee braces are shit but Leatt are brilliant. Then someone else will say Pods are fantastic and shit all over Leatt braces. This is usually because they never bothered making sure they fitted properly and just bought online, then found they were very uncomfortable and/or didn't protect them properly. Any decent knee brace will prevent hyerextension of the leg extremely well, even if the fit isn't very good. BUT knee braces have a limited effectiveness with reducing twisting motions, and impacts through the lower leg that can damage the meniscus. And to be effective at all, a knee brace must have a good snug fit of your leg and knee to give you some protection at all. A poor fitting knee brace will only do half the job of protecting you. See the video above for how to check the braces fit correctly. HOW MUCH TO SPEND? The cheapest knee protection that is actually a knee brace seems to be the Mobius X8. Anything less is just a glorified knee guard. I reckon it is just an entry level brace and if you can afford it try to get into the mid-level braces and as mentioned focus more on the fit than the advertising hype they will throw at you. If you are Bill Gates, have freak legs or seriously shitty knees then look at the custom jobbies. MORTGAGE YOUR SOUL FOR CUSTOM KNEE BRACES? Custom knee braces? Bloody expensive option, but if you've got the money then you will get the best possible protection against twisting or compression of the knee joint. If you've got existing knee injuries then it makes sense to get the best braces you can too. Ditto for guys with weird legs that simply don't work with off-the-shelf braces. But most riders will have to draw a line somewhere and try to get the best fitting off-the-shelf knee braces possible. Remember if you have a knee injury sometimes you can claim an orthopedic brace like the CTi Customs against your medical insurance. And depending on the work you do they can be a tax deduction too. OTHER THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR Make sure the velcro straps don't catch you pants when taking them on or off. Leatt and EVS Web knee braces feature crumple zones because some believe braces can cause femur fractures - I believe the current research (as of 2016) says this is unlikely, at least for everyday dirt riders - see our video here. When you try the braces, take your boots along and see if they'll fit. If you have wide calve muscles there's a good chance your straps might not be long enough to take the braces too. Don't wear two layers under the knee braces they will move against each other and allow the brace to move. Some braces like the EVS Web can be quite bulky and might need bigger pants to fit. So look after those knees guys, and may the force be with you. See our full video series on knee injuries and protection here.
  5. Temps are starting to climb into the 70F+ range (21C+). Yeah, sort of. It's nice not to have to bundle up, but with full protection kit on, it can start feeling pretty warm, especially doing laps on an MX track, which has me proactively thinking about strategy for higher summer temps. I have started riding with knee braces (Mobius X8) and wow my knees sweat a ton. I am wearing them right against my skin. Any suggestions for under sleeves that work well in the heat? (I typically wear ankle length socks in my boots and would prefer not to wear thigh high socks, but am open to it if any are designed for hot conditions.) I've searched here in TT and online and haven't found any obvious choices, hence this post. And speaking of, any suggestions for upper body base layers for the heat while I am at it would be most welcome. I've been wearing Craft brand (most known for cross country skiing and cycling), which seem to be pretty high tech, but would be curious what anyone has found works well under typical dirt bike armor.
