    Front Brake Help

I just bought a 2003 kx250 a few weeks ago. The guy I bought it from said he dropped the bike on it's side, and after that, the front brakes would "act up," but after feeling them, I figured they would just need bled and would be fine. After getting the bike home, I bled the brakes and realized that they weren't just mushy, but they would only grab on for a second before losing pressure, even while holding the lever all the way down. Sometimes they grab a lot harder for a lot longer, but they mostly just squeeze for a quick second. Also, when attempting to bleed the brakes for the third time, I realized that every time I pulled the brake lever, bubbles would rise from the bottom of the reservoir, which I was thinking maybe meant the master cylinder was damaged causing it to pump air into the brake line, but I don't know. I don't really want to take my bike to a shop or to buy a whole new front brake setup, so any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks! (Edit: I've never dealt with dirt bike brakes, so this is all new to me)
  2. So I'm looking for some pivot levers for my clutch and hand brake on my '99 KX 250, I found these ones on amazon that say they will fit an '00 to '04 kx250, do you guys think these would fit my '99? if not do you know any that I can buy online, Im looking for green ones specifically, Thanks. https://www.amazon.com/MZS-2000-2017-2001-2017-2000-2005-2000-2004/dp/B01E6XQDFM/ref=wl_mb_wl_huc_mrai_1_dp

    Confused Kx250

I bought a kx 250 a couple months back was told it was a 1997 i looked up the vin on the frame and it was a 1992. I didn't mind because regardless i had gotten 250 bucks off anyway. I rebuilt it and did the clutch but the gasket kit i bought for a 1992 kx 250 was not right at all so i bought a different one and that one wasnt right. Basically is there a way i can look up what year my engine is i tried typing in the engine vin and it didnt work. Thanks!

    yz 250 street legal,conversion

Hi guys i have some questions and would appreciate any help you guys may have. I have a 1998 yz 250 ive had for a few years thats been in the famliy for awile. I am doing a ground up redo on it this winter. Im geting a used frame because the one i have dosent have a title so i figured wile im at it ill get a 1998/1997 wr 250 frame so i can make it street legal. I know the 98 wr 250 wasent introduced in the us but the 97 was and the yz 250 is the same bike from 96 to 98. So my question is are the wr 250s the same ? Could i find a 97 wr250 frame and swap everything from my 98 yz 250 to it ? I wont realy ride it on the street much considering its not the best bike for commuting (by far) lol, but i figure if im geting another frame with a title miswell be able to throw my street tires on it and rip some twistes with it if i want to. Thanks for any help.

    Kx250f oil seals

Hello! I am hoping to get some help with my 2006 KX250F. The problem is that it keeps blowing oil seals on the engine. I have checked the crank case breather tube and it is free of any sort of trash that may have built up between rides. I was it regularly. I have replaced most of the outer seals aside the valve cover gasket. Any suggestions would be a big help in attempting to solve my problem.

  9. Hi all, I have a 2004 kx 250 2 stroke and it wont start. it only backfires. I was out riding it one day and came up to a stop so the bike was just idling and it started to try and die so i revved it up a few times then let it die and now it wont start back up. It only pops or backfires when you kick it. Its getting good spark and i just put a brand new plug and coil in it. I took the reeds apart and they look like they're brand new. It was running great before so i dont know what happened. Im thinking it could be a fuel problem even tho the plug is a little wet if you take it out after a bunch of kicking. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks
  10. Hi all, Have a problem here that I need sorted by tomorrow night. Let me just say that the bike (2010 kx250f) was running like a dream (well, maybe a little lean) before any of this happened. Recently the throttle cable snapped which prompted me to replace it, no biggie. I had been running without a hotstart since I had bought the bike last year so I decided to replace it along side the throttle repair. The bike came with no lever for the hotstart and I presumed that the cable was snapped (which it was). I bought a replacement cable and lever, no hassle. I pulled the tank off the bike to access the carb to replace the cable. I unscrewed the plastic screw that sits over the hotstart. There was no little brass cylinder (not sure if this is the plunger) or spring on the end of the cable or in this screw. There was no point in replacing the cable since I hadn't got the brass cylinder or spring so I left it while i fixed the throttle cables. I have now seemingly lost the black plastic screw leaving a little nipple like rubbery thing sticking out of hotstart port in the carb. I am presuming that this is the plunger which should be pushed into itself rather than sticking out. I didn't think of it as much of an issue at the time, but now with the bike back together, the carb is pissing out fuel, from what I think is the float overflow tube, every time I turn the fuel flow valve to open. I can now not get the bike started.. The only reason I can think of this happening is because the little rubber nipple is sticking out of the carb. Can anyone confirm this or have any quick fixes that I can use? I cannot for the life of me find the plastic screw and will not be able to get one by Sunday Below on the right, is a picture of the black plastic screw I was talking about.
  11. I am looking at getting my first dirt bike, I have ridden quads and have always wanted to ride bikes. Before people start sharing there opinions about 2 stroke vs 4, this is what I'm looking to get out of the bike. Something that is fun and easy to learn on, Period. Don't worry about maintenance costs or the "thrill" of 2 strokes etc... I originally though 2 stroke but my buddy has a 2 stroke kx250 and i felt like i was out of control every time time i gave more then a touch of throttle. Is this because I'm new to riding dirt bikes or is this a 2 stroke thing. I want something that is easy to control and I like what people say about the smooth power bands on the 4 strokes. Cheers, Kyler
  12. I currently own a 2002 Kawasaki KDX 220R and I'm looking for a new bike. I've been looking at 04 - 08 Yamaha YZ 250s because I think they'd be better for me. Just tell me what bikes you'd recommend. I'm 14 years old, 6'0, 200 lbs, and have been riding for 9 years. And before you say my bike is perfectly fine, I will say this. I ride trails and the street and backyard tracks with my friends. My KDX lacks the power to do much on a track and it doesn't have the power I want for riding on the street either. Just wanted to get that out of the way. All recommendations are appreciated. I can buy anything below $3000.
  13. I noticed today that there is some play in the clutch arm on my 2004 KX250. It moves maybe 1/8 inch up out of the case. No side to side movement and the clutch seems to be engaging fine. I tried taking the clutch basket out and looking at things but everything seemed to be okay. Maybe I'm not looking for the right things? Any idea as to why this may be happening? Thanks for the input!
  14. i have a very beautiful 2004 kx125, i picked it up a few months ago and when i got to the guys place to check it out, he started it by foot like normal and i rode it around the yard and about 500 feet i went and brrrrrrrr it fouled the plug??? but it was 1800$ so i was like heck with it im still getting it to the looks of the condition and claimed recent rebuild. i took it home and we replaced the spark plug and we had to bumpstart it this time. again 500 feet and brrrr fouled. this bike has a BRAND NEW mikuni carbourator OEM with jetting and airscrew position on point, Timing is perfect, i even tried advancing and retarding the timing, still nothing. i put it back in its normal position though. Reeds are good. no gasket leeks. good compresion. spark plug is BR9EIX NGK. it gets a spark, its getting gas, its getting air. when i try and start it, it back fires sometimes a loud pop. carb should be out of question, timing should be out of question. what else is there to check? i have talked to a few people saying it might be either, crank seals, or the stator. but i have NO IDEA of what to do. please help me i know u guys might know what to do, im 15 and trying to get into mechanics and i try to be the best mechanic i could possibly be with my hard earned tools. 4/1/17 ill be checking on any comments or suggestions every 8 hours or so. and i also dont want to buy new parts for the bike that it doesnt need. Thanks for reading! give me your best shot, I accept any help!

    Hard start won't idle

Hey guys been following you guys for a while. I got an issue with my 08 kx450f it's been getting harder and harder to start year after year. So a friend suggested to re set the valves. So I did. They were a bit tight so I shimmed them. Re set my timing. Counted my chain pins and all. Still a bastard to start. Checked my plug decent spark. Lots of compression will stop my boot right in its tracks if I'm not putting everything into it. Checked my auto decomp. It's working. Once I get it started after wearing myself out. It will run hot and only with the choke on. Take the choke off and it dies instantly. Checked my hot start and it idles up when I pull it while running. So I don't know, I got fresh gas in it. Maybe something with the slow jet in the carb? New air filter. I'm a mechanic so I'm not totally retarded. But don't know carbs very much. What I do know is it looks not very fun to pull out. If anyone has any pointers I would be very great full. Thanks guys
  16. Here's a gnarly question for y'all: I drag race a 2001 Kawasaki KX500 2 stroke. Currently looking for some more top speed. With 16/38 gearing it tops out just under 100MPH, and currently need it geared well into the 120s as I am letting off and shutting the bike off around 1000 feet. Here's my issue: I talked to a few custom sprocket shops and the smallest sprocket they said I could fit on my bike was a 36t sprocket, and that wasn't even guaranteed. They claimed that they wouldn't recommend me paying for anything under 37 because they couldn't guarantee that it would work. Now, there is a solution, albiet an expensive one. Something called a "Quick Change Barnes Style Hub". Basically a hub with a tiny outer flange that would let me run sprockets into the low 20s. Issue with this is, the hub alone is over 600 dollars. Tie in a wheel, lace kit, and bearings and I am looking at over 1,000 bucks JUST in my rear wheel. Keeping in mind I am only about 750 bucks in this ENTIRE bike, does anybody know of a solution that would let me run somewhere around a 32t sprocket? Is there a Kawasaki hub with a smaller I.D that I could run and lace onto my existing rim? Or am I screwed with buying this expensive flat track hub that will let me finally get this bike into the 10s? ANY help is appreciated!
  17. So i have a 2009 kx450f with efi and I'm trying to hook up lights and turn signals and all of that good stuff to make it street legal. I know I need to tap into the bikes power supply to power all of this but I don't know where that would be. Should I go through the cdi or the efi and if so where would that be.

    Need help with bike alignment.

So, I just purchased a used 2014 KX250f yesterday that I found a great deal on. Guy just wanted it gone. The only problem I am running into is the swingarm/rear wheel alignment. I have the pictures right below. I know the rear fender is off to the left a little but when I compared the wheel to the seat and frame, it still looks off. To me, in person, it looks as if the swingarm or the rear wheel is shifted to the right. I don't know exactly how to tell if it is off. Is there any measurement I can take? Also, if it is off. How can I fix it? I haven't been able to ride it yet to see if I can feel it out. I live in the suburbs, and I can't get to the track until this weekend. I can take more pics from different angles if you need me too. Any help will be appreciated. Also, I got the engine mapping plugs from the guy who owned it, but he didn't have any knowledge of how to use them. I know what the white, green, and black plugs do, I just don't know where to plug one in. When I was looking over the bike, there were a lot of plugs that looked just the same. So I'm not sure which one to exchange.

    LAMS approved 2t

does anyone know if a 1997 Yamaha WR250z is legal on your L's/LAMS?
  20. Long story short, my KX has been acting up lately, it seems like the jetting is constantly changing and will run lean even if i have the air screw in tight enough to foul a plug. Sometimes it runs perfectly fine, usually trail riding, but typically when I'm hill climbing or riding very hard i will get the idle surge when i let off the throttle. This makes me want to turn the air screw in to avoid a shattered piston from running lean but its not really solving the issue. Last weekend I raced and it ran great for the first 2 minutes, got the holeshot, then it just kept bogging, putting and popping until it died and did not want to start again. The one cover for the actuator rod for the powervalve was loose which i could not tighten without taking the cylinder off, could air be getting into the ratio from there even though exhaust was coming out? Also, this piston has a ton of hours on it. Someone recommended replacing the rings, as they could be worn and not keeping a great seal on the engine. Should i replace the rings, tighten the cover for the powervalve actuator, clean the carb and put it all back together or throw a new piston on now? I wanted to race this weekend which probably wont happen if I'm doing the top end rebuild. Also, if the top end is recommended, where do i start? the cylinder looks fine, do I have to get a (very slightly) bigger piston to make up for the worn cylinder edges? How do I know what piston to get and how do I know what size base gasket to replace it with? Any tips, thoughts, recommendations would be great thanks!
  21. Been riding for a number of years, on and off road. Not a serious dirt biker for the last few years but would like to get back into riding off road. Riding consists of: Mostly NW trail riding and log roads, something I can ride straight out of my garage. Occasional although very rare track day, and occasionally paddle tires in NW sand dunes Important features: somewhat light weight, torqued high (KTM in mind), looking for power and speed readily available when I need it on a straight away, versatility. Would like to make street legal if possible (just for getting around from trail to trail) but not a necessity. Like the weight and balance of many 250's and 230's but thinking I should probably look for something a little bigger. Long time fan of KTM and have not rode but really liking 300XC-W. Can anyone provide a little guidance or direction?

    1998 KX250 shifting problems

Hi, this is my first post on TT! I recently traded my PS4 for a 1998 KX250 with a "broken shift lever" the bike was unable to start due to it being freezing cold and stuck in gear. The reason the shift lever was broke was because the splines were completely worn. So right away, I bought a new shift lever. The old one was a bitch to get off as he had snapped the end of the bolt off to tighten the lever to the shift shaft. I ended up using a pickle fork to pry it off. Bit anyway. After putting on a nice, new shift lever, I was ready to get it running, only to unable to get it into neutral. Which wasn't really an issue. I figured I'd just bump start it. After several attempts, it didn't start, but I got it into neutral. After getting it into neutral, I couldn't get it back into gear. It just clicks about 7 times up or down and nothing happens. Now, I am able to get it in and out of gear, but only by clicking it randomly up and down so many times. I have no idea what gear it's going into, and it has no pattern. I already have the bike mostly tore apart. I plan on splitting the cases, I am just curious if someone can help me diagnose the issue, before I split the cases. Possibly worn shift forks?

    KX 250 high rpm bog

This is going to be very long winded, but I know there are people who know a lot more about 2 strokes than I do that I need help from, so I want to provide as much detail as possible. I bought a 2003 KX 250 about six months ago. When I first got it, I replaced the air filter, cleaned the carburetor, and put in a new spark plug. Up until about a month ago, that was all I had done to the bike besides minor stuff that doesn't relate to the actual performance of the bike. It rode hard and fast since I had bought it without a hiccup (besides some fouled plugs), but on a ride about a month ago, I had been riding it decently hard for about an hour and a half when I tried to really open up coming up a slight hill and it sounded like the bike hit a rev limiter. It still had all of its low end power and otherwise ran perfectly fine, but it was like it could not get into the powerband. After keeping off the pipe and letting it coast as much as I could on the way back home, it seemed to get a bit better, where it would just get there, but any farther and it would sputter like crazy and bog. Just two weeks ago, I came to the conclusion (to the best of my knowledge at least) that the power valve was sticking shut, and since I was going to take the cylinder off to clean the power valve anyways, I decided to rebuild the top end. After cleaning the power valve, replacing the piston, and repacking the silencer, I broke it in nice and good and let it rip. It sounded crisp and had all of its power everywhere it was supposed to have it. I felt like I was riding a new bike, so I enjoyed that for about half an hour. Next day, I hop on it and warm it up, take off and it bogs when I get to the powerband. Every time I've gotten on it since, it's a different story. One minute, it's bogging like heck, I sit for a few seconds to calm my frustration, take off and it rips with a sound like that of angels singing. It always runs exactly the same at low rpms, but very different at high rpms. I hate to admit it, but I cleaned the power valve without completely disassembling it, so I think that may be my problem. I'd just hate to tear the bike apart again, thoroughly clean the power valve assembly, put it back together and then my problem still not be fixed. Not sure if it's important, but it does foul plugs quite a bit. It has since I got it though and it ran good before this problem started. Any help is appreciated. Thanks for reading.
  25. Hi all, I have a 2004 Kawasaki kx250 that died suddenly on me the other day. all i can get it to do is backfire every once in awhile. Tested the resistance and everything of the magneto and stator with a multi-meter and all is good. Coil is new oem Kawasaki the reeds are brand new vforce and the top end and carb have been completely rebuilt. key on crank is intact and all the timing marks are lined up. I hooked a timing light to it and spun the motor over really fast and found that it is sparking way to late. The service manual says that it is supposed to fire 14 degrees before TDC but it is sparking way after TDC. Im thinking its a fried CDI box since its the only thing i wasnt able to check. Any help would be appreciated Thanks
