  1. '09 DRZ400SM I replaced the rings and head gasket, and she starts up and runs just fine. Checked the compression after it was warmed up (air filter removed, throttle pinned open) and got a reading of 90psi. Put a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder, compression barely went up to 95psi. I'm at altitude, so the stock 135psi as per the manual would be 115psi here (5280ft = 15% compression loss). So right now I'm at a loss of 20% compared to a new bike at this altitude. is 90-95psi acceptable at this altitude? I'm not sure what normal compression would be for a 11 year old bike with new rings. I know a leakdown test would be best but I don't own one and don't have the funds to buy one right now. Otherwise I would just pressurize it and listen for leaks.
  2. 2007 crf250r leak down test results. Don’t really hear much from exhaust or intake. Hear a good amount of gurgling/air coming from the left (stator side/clutch lever) oil fill hole. Shows 27% loss. I’m assuming it’s cylinder, piston and/or rings. Am I diagnosing it correctly? Reason for test is that bike does not want to start using kickstart or rolling start. Starting fluid does not help either. Valve lash is loose all around at TDC. Compression test shows in the 50s but I’m assuming it’s because of the decompression mechanism. Just want to make sure I have it right before I start tearing the bike down. Link to video of oil gurgling.
  3. can I do a leak down test on a 2 stroke with the kickstarter and clutch removed? It wouldn't make a difference because the crankcase is sealed off from the right side and the transmission right?
  4. I posted this last Oct... My son races an 02 cr250, mostly stock, fmf pipe, recently added a shorty silencer. 15 hours on rebuild...has always been a little slow to come back to idle but seems to have gotten worse. When riding hard it takes 3 - 5 seconds to come down to idle. I don't know what it could be! Jetting, reeds, air leaks...?? The response I got was to change the left side crank seal. It made a little bit of difference but didn't completely solve the problem. Over the winter it seemed to be less of an issue and into the spring racing. We did a fresh top end this summer and had the normal slow to come back to idle I expect for the cr250. It was running great and very strong. We have 8 hours now on the top end and the problem is back in a huge way. Almost un-rideable two weeks ago at Muddy Creek MX. When he clutches in the corners I can hear it at a high rev. My thoughts and questions... 1. If it's the left seal leaking air it would cause a lean mixture right? I pull the plug and it's dark. Wouldn't the leaking lean situation cause a lighter plug? I see a lot of threads pointing to air leaks and leak down tests, but no one tells what the plug looks like. 2. If it's the right side seal wouldn't it leak oil into the case and smoke? This would not cause a sustained rev would it? 3. Reading the plug dark, I moved the needle down thinking I have a rich mixture and it could be loading up on fuel. No change! Should I go farther or smaller main jet? The plug is dark but not dark enough that I think it's a mixture problem...and it runs smooth and no missing. 4. Someone said warm it up and spray starter fluid around the engine to see if I can find an air leak. But again wouldn't it cause a lean plug? 5. Throttle cable is new and very crisp...always has been through the good and bad times. Frustrated and ready to tare it down if needed but I don't know what to look for or what to replace. I'm looking for some been there done that wisdom. I've noticed a lot of threads state the problem, list suggestions, but never state what the solution was. My name is racer dad, and that's what I am. I'm not a pro engine builder but we do race 3 bikes and I have done about 6 or 7 engines now and this is the only problem I've not been able to solve. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  5. I did a 2T leak down test on my 2013 TE300 and found that the left crank seal was leaking. So I have to replace that. What I also found was that my left power valve cover was leaking too. I'm thinking that it's not necessarily a big problem, that it will probably just cause a heap of spooge to drip around there rather than a leaning out problem. Is this correct?
  6. Cannot get CRF 450 to even fire under any circumstances. I've read so many posts, tried so many things including: Valve inspection and adjustments: Perfect valve seats and clearances - tested and re-tested Valve Timing: All 3 marks line up (right crankcase gear, Left flywheel (rotor) mark and overhead cam) Proven Piston is at TDC when doing this. Leak down test: In the very good range. 15% leak (Upper green area) of dial. Air is escaping through rings I guess. I hear gurgling which i'm guessing is the crankshaft sump. Spark test : Spark jumps 4mm - New PLug Impedance tests on coil and stator - check fine according to youtube video Carb: Using starter fluid to rule out carb. .Have also tried with serviced carb Have even push started by dragging behind car. No hint of starting. Any ideas on what to try next? Clue: Last time bike started it had been sitting for years, and started with old oil. Ran about 5 mins then shut off and has never fired since. The help is appreciated bigly!
  7. Heres a strange problem for the community, I have a bike thats failing a compression test but passes a leak down with flying colors... 2012 KTM 250 SX-F Valves spot on, clearances spot on New cam chain Dirt Tricks cam chain tensioner HAS fuel HAS spark 4% leakdown on the leakdown test FAILS compression test horribly Thoughts?? I am flat out stumped...
