Hey TT Friends - I've been looking for answers and researching things for years, and I've always loved coming across this website. The forums here have been very informative and helpful in many ways. I've come to learn (in life) that the quickest way to get the most sincere answers, is to ask the question. So I finally figured that I would join TT and get personal feedback from any who are willing to offer up the help. I recently came into a 2007 CRF450X, and I'm ready to start making it my own. It has had some "things" done to it. But rather than me listing those, I would like to know from you all just what it is that I should know about this bike. (Quick note on me, not a beginner or rookie, but certainly not as seasoned as some) I'm looking for tricks, tips, and ideas that will help me get the most out of this experience. This bike will mostly be a buddy bike for single track and deserty stuff, with the occasional visit to a moto track out here in Utah. Aside from general info, I had one other quick question: Has anyone ever put a 450R tank on the X for shorter trips that don't require as much fuel, mostly to cut down on width and weight?

edit: TL;DR = does this bike have a fuel filter? I suspect nephew clogged everything up when he dumped a quart of oil into the fuel tank... End edit Nephew: “Hey Uncle! I wanna be a motorcycle guy like you!” Me: “Rad!” [fist bump] “Your dad ok with that? Tomorrow’s your birthday, right?” Nephew: “Yeah... as long as its not on the street... can I ride grandpa’s bike (a cherry 71 BSA 441)” Me: “How about we start you out on a super cool 125 first?” pics below... fast forward to the bike stalling out, dead, won’t even pop start. Nephew: “I just filled it with pre-mix, it can’t be out of gas.” Me: “What ratio did you use?” Nephew: “uh... whut? It said premix on it so I just put the whole quart in” Me: “Ok little dude... we’re done riding today... let’s go back the the truck and uncle will take care of this.” I drained the tank, pulled the carb, sprayed it out, put a JD red needle position #2, 420 and 32.5 in it (riding at 8800 feet). Starts on first kick... idles fine.. feels great at WOT. But it’s choking at ~1/2 throttle under load... like on a hill climb or whatnot... if I don’t ride the clutch and keep the revs high it bogs and wants to stall. Does this bike have a fuel filter? I can’t see one between the petcock and the carb... it’s got a Mikuni 38 on it. Bone stock 2020 TC120 new from the dealer. I don’t know what the bike felt like before... I never even threw a leg over it until now... IDK how it rode before and nephew is a gem of a kid but total newb and in his first afternoon on it I don’t think he even got into 3rd gear and certainly didn’t try any hill climbs so he can’t tell me how the bike felt before... IDK if it’s a pre-existing issue or a symptom of the knucklehead move... I’m going to run the Jarvis mods on it etc but FIRST I want to diagnose the problem... before I just start tweaking everything and create more problems than I solve... thanks in advance everyone !

400E --- What's the story with my radiator cap rubbing against the fuel tank making it nearly impossible to get it on and off easily? Some days it will literally take me 5 minutes to take off my rad cap, check coolant (5 seconds) and put the cap back on.

Very much a Newb, so needs some help. My bike just bought this spring second hand with about 22,000 km on her, gets hot (and I don't know hot it really is supposed to get) while I'm riding around town. Not a lot of traffic where I live, some I'm sure would find it laughable. She'll get right warmed up and die on me sometimes, and I know when its coming because I can hear the rpm slowing right down usually when I'm stopped at a light. If I stay on the throttle a bit it will keep running otherwise she'll thump thump thump die. Mind you this doesn't happen all the time, cold days mostly (5 - 12 C). Any advice goes a long way, don't know anyone else who rides in person. Thanks by's

Hi everybody! I'd like to start off by saying I have been researching buying a bike for a few months now, but I still have almost no clue what I'm talking about ;p. So like I said I've been in the market for a few months and Ive finally decided that its time to pull the trigger. I'd like to spend less than $1000 and buy something in between 80-125cc so that the whole family can ride. I'm 5'11'' and around 160lbs and I've been looking at a couple KX85's and CRF80's but I'm still not certain about what I really need. Going to be used as more of a fun haver, pit bike sort of thing. Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks guys! JD

1998 CR125R Resurrected: Questions from a basket case.
maparkercolo posted a topic in Honda 2 Stroke
I wanted to start this as a place to ask questions about the little things I can't figure out because I never saw the bike assembled?! My son had outgrown his XR100 and I managed to find what I hope turns out to be a terrific deal on a bike in a box... or rather several boxes. It is a 1998 CR125R which someone had started a rebuild on and walked away from. The guy I purchased from claimed that it was literally a barn find and that he bought is super cheap by scrounging around the barn collecting everything that looked like it cam from the bike. It had a new Hot Rods connecting rod and crank installed in the bottom end, but when they went to put on the right hand case, they cross threaded the bolt that holds on the primary drive gear to the clutch. They went ahead and tried to crank down the side cover with it like that and broke the side case. From there it looks like they just walked away. The cylinder was off and scored up pretty bad, a brand new piston was on it, but not ring, etc, etc, etc. I re-tapped the hole for the primary, picked up a case cover off ebay and resolved that issue. I had a new sleeve installed putting it back to the stock bore and have a new piston and rings in it. I drained and bled front and rear brakes, rebuild that front forks, greased or replaced all the bearings except for the head (which are smooth). It was missing all side covers and rad shrouds, but he can starting riding it without those until some come up on ebay. It was also missing the exhaust. I found one that somebody had as part of a CR500 into a CR125 aluminum frame project. I think it will work, but they'd hack off the rear mount on the expansion chamber cutting a couple of holes in it. I welded those shut, but still need to work on a rear hanger and a way to mount the muffler as the bracket and the frame mount don't line up? We started it for the first time yesterday to begin heat-cycling to seat the rings. Starts up first kick But pisses coolant out of the telltale and from around the head gasket I'm going to call the machine shop tomorrow to be sure that they decked the head AND the cylnder, if so I'll try a new head gasket. If that doesn't work then I'll attempt to lap them on granite or get the shop to redo them although won't be happy if I have to pull the cylinder again! I'm going to pull the water pump and check that I got the new seals in correctly and see if the shaft is damaged. Thanks for wading through all this. I appreciate any input and advice!
