  1. Hello! I'm excited /extremely new motorcycle work and am in need of advice. I've just moved to AZ and picked up an 87 Honda XL600, sadly once I hit 70 on the highway it started to shut down, and oil was dripping from the connection to the air filter. After a nice $200 u-haul back to my home I'm trying to get it back up and running, I'm waiting to get my manual in, and hoped I could get some advice on how to move forward with working on it. Lastly I'll add that there was a line that got plugged / busted off during that first ride (I believe), it comes from the bottom of the air filter, and looks like it was connected back to the engine. I've attached some photos. Any advices welcome, thank you in advance.
  2. I'm interested in a Honda XR250 that I've found on craigslist. The guy that is selling it has it listed that the time tensioner is not set and its not fully put together. I'm new with the bikes and wanted to know if that is a big deal or if it is easily fixable, if so then how do i fix that? I want to make sure I will be able to get the bike up and running for my use.
  3. This summer I bought a 2019 CRF450R brand new. I rode every weekend all summer long and now that awful time of year where the bikes get put away and the snow starts to fly has come. I’m new with all of this and so I have a few questions about the maintenance I should be doing while the bike is down. I have already flushed the coolant with distilled water and added engine ice, I have done an oil and filter change, I have replaced the chain, and I have made sure that my sag is set to where it needs to be. Is there anything else I should consider doing over the winter to make sure that my bike is ready to go in the spring? Should I store it with gas, oil, and coolant in it? I know it’s probably dumb questions but I am very new at this and am trying to maintain my bike to the best of my ability. Thank you
  4. Hey guys, newbie here. I have been trawling through thumper talk for years for help and info reading through others forums. I decided to start a profile as I have just picked up a little 1992 Suzuki RM125 for a lockdown project over the coming weeks. The bike is in usual rough condition, plenty of stripped bolts, elcectrical tape/cable ties, evidence of zero maintenance over the last 10 years. On the plus side the tyres are next to new & the engine/motor seems to be pretty strong top&bottom end wise. I have a problem where just after the power valve opens, there is a bad surging/spluttering/coughing that doesn’t clear out. The bike seems to be overfuelling and running way too rich with trails of premix behind me. Now when I first got the bike the carb was messed up (Mikuni TM 35) it started first kick with or without choke & wouldn’t idle, still had good lower/mid power but stuttering up top. I’ve dropped the pilot jet from 50 to 45 and have the needle clip in the 2nd position, the bike starts and idles perfect now and crisp up until the top end where it still splutters. There is a 330 main jet in at the minute but I have tried as low as a 270 and the bike is still crazy rich with the nasty splutter/smoke. Crank seals are okay, not loosing any transmission oil. Reeds are perfect. Not sure what else to check? Im thinking it might be an electrical problem instead of overfuelling. I bought a new spark plug & swapped the coils from my dads RMX250 & it seems a little better but maybe it’s in my head. I think it’s not sparking up in the high rpm to burn off the fuel? It does kind of feel like a rev limiter kicks in just as the power valve opens. Could it be the CDI unit? I’m completely stumped. Hopefully someone can help me out. Thanks folks :)
  5. Hey, all. I drove up to the Walker Valley ORV today to check it out. I was disappointed to discover that there weren't any easy 4x4 routes accessible for my 4Runner. The dirt bike trails looked really cool, though. I'm not looking to turn my Yota into an offroad beast, but moto trail riding looks like it might be more achievable for me. So, I'm wondering how difficult of a hobby this is to get into. I'm sure its expensive, as is anything that involves a motor, but I'm hoping less so than 4x4s. From what I can see these are the barriers to entry: 1. Buying a dirt bike Expensive, though pre-owned deals might be out there. My cursory search around craigslist didn't yield very enticing results, unfortunately. Since I'm a beginner, I'd want to get a bike that I wouldn't feel bad beating up, so max budget of $2k. Is the market around here super limited, my expectations totally off, wrong time of the year, looking in the wrong place, or something else? 2. Transporting the bike I already have my motorcycle endorsement, so I could get a dual sport and just drive to the trail on the bike. However, I don't really want to do that. I'd prefer my recreational vehicle and my ride home were two separate entities (hence why I don't want to build out my 4Runner). I saw some hitch-mounted motorcycle carriers that look like they would do the trick, and they are not very costly either. 3. Gear I'm sure this part is expensive. Helmet, goggles, jacket, pants, gloves, boots, armor, etc. When I had a street bike, the estimate was to spend an extra grand on these items. 4. Learning how to trail ride I tried looking into an MSF Dirt Bike class, but there are none offered around here. Perhaps local clubs offer newbie oriented rides? Anyway, just trying to get a feel for the hobby and the community. Thanks for reading and I appreciate any advice you can provide!

Hi all after getting loads of info off this site in the past I have now needed to be a pain in the bum and ask some questions myself, i have recently just bought a 2007 drz400s completely stock, I had my 1st ride up my street yesterday and found it not very powerful atall? I know it's not a powerhouse stock but wow I could not even get the front wheel up atall even with a stand still a lot of revs and dumping the clutch? Maybe rear sprocket too small? Maybe carb needs a clean? The bike starts right away and is in good shape she idles great and sound fine rides smooth abit too smooth feels like it's being held back at wide open throttle? And ideas or thoughts/advise is greatly appreciated in advance. P.s the bike had been sat in the dealership for 3 months or so if this has any negative effect. Thanks

  8. Hello, long time lurker and now dirt bike owner! (Mod: please move to appropriate forum if this is in wrong area) My 13 year old son kept asking for a dirt bike to ride with friends. After much hand wringing and talking the boss (mom) into it, we are now owners of a Honda CRF125 (son) & CRF150 (mom and dad). I grew up riding quads like 400ex, and streetbikes. I was fairly nuts and a moderate to good rider in my youth. Wow, dirt bikes are a different experience altogether and much harder to adjust to than I thought. I have a complete new respect for those who ride dirt bikes well, and motocross/enduro in general. I have done the research and watched video after video, my question to this community is this. Real world, what advice do you have for teaching my son good habits and experiences? And by proxy mom and dad. I'm only talking light riding and beginner advice. Trail riding and dirt roads, nothing crazy. Just tips and real world advice and things you learned along your journey. We have full protective gear and the bikes, now we just need the experience to make memories as a family. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I'll leave it with one experience I've had already. Unloaded the bikes once I got home. I jumped on the 125 and proceeded to teach my son the basics. Clutch, shift pattern, brakes, stance, choke, gas, etc. I then revved her up to show them (whole family + neighbors) how to start - yup, got cocky and whiskey throttled it throwing me on my butt and barely missing my Jeep. Bruised ego and replaced broken clutch lever later, all was well and my son took to a clutch like a fish out of water! ? We are located in Valdosta, Ga. Looking forward to finding riders and places to ride around us.
  9. Hi Folks, I'm back into dirt bikes after decades away, I bought a 2003 yz450f because I thought 4 stroke would be a mild way to go, man was I wrong. This thing is a monster but unfortunately I can't get it too run right despite getting, carb cleaning etc. Basically it starts easily when cold but never really runs clean except when on the throttle hard which is wild. Once warm won't stay running and really hard to start. I will being my journey into understanding why and possibly doing a rebuild. I've downloaded a manual to start. I'm in Whitby Ontario Cheers
  10. Hey guys, I have a 1996 XT350 that I just got. It will idle fine indefinitely, can run without a problem to 7K RPM, but I’ll get a minute down the road at 60mph and it’ll sputter and die. Does fine in low rpm though. Boots are new. Have been running new gas with deadpan in it all day. I’m a little clueless- Please enlighten me, friends! Next step is to remove and clean carbs.
  11. Well, I made a real newbie mistake. I'm a dumbass! Purchased a very well cared for 2000 Drz400 couple months ago. I hadn't done much dirtbiking since the 80s when I was a teen. The last 15+ years I've enjoyed the open road on my cruiser. But, since I upgraded my son to a TTR125, dad had to get a bike too🤔 Went out to the local AOAA trails a couple weeks ago after a big rain. Went through a " mud puddle" that ended up being over two feet deep. By the time I realized it, all I could do was hold tight and ride out, which thankfully I was able to do. Bike never died. Rest of the day it ran just fine. Ok, by now you know where this is going... Well, I didn't realize I made a huge mistake. But, since I didn't know it at the time, I rode it every couple days the next couple weeks. Nothing crazy like peak revving, mostly farm trails, etc. Here goes. Yesterday I was riding it and noticed a different sound, like a pinging, or high pitched clacking. Also seemed like the acceleration was off a bit. Finally, my rpms would occasionally stay up after I released the throttle. I decided to change the oil, which I had just done 100 miles earlier. Two things right away that were wrong. The color of the oil was slightly brown, or chocolate in color, and the amount of oil that drained out was about 300 mls more than should have. I still didn't know what the problem was, only that I had one! Called a mechanic friend who after lots of questions got me to remember the episode riding through the mude hole. Then it hit me like a Mack truck. I pulled muddy water into my oil. Just great. Now, this same friend is suggesting I try to clean it out by flushing the system a time or two with kerosene, each time starting it for 10 seconds or so. Once the kerosene comes out clear, put in new oil and new filter. He's says it's an old school fix. Sounds reasonable to me. Of course, I still may have caused irreparable damage. Doesn't seem like I can make it worse trying his trick. Right? I'll follow up on this post after I pick up a new filter tomorrow. Wish me luck. Rich

  13. New member here. Sorry if this is the wrong section. This forum is very different from other forums I have been a member of. I Just picked up a 2009 drz400sm with under 5000km on it. Has a number of decent mods too. Just not a fan of the dual Yosh exhaust. This is my second bike. I also have a cbr600rr. This 400 thumper is quite a change from the RR though. I have a lot to learn. For example, is there an easy way to tell if the carb has been jetted without taking the carb out? I might be interested in trading the exhaust if anyone is interested. Bring on spring! Parker

  17. Hi, here goes my first thread as well as my first post on here! Name is Matt. Been a reader for quite a while and have learned a ton from these forums. Anyways, i'm 24, and have liked motocross bikes since I was 6, my uncle was an mx rider here in the northeastern ohio and shoot mainly all over ohio (greg urban, 803, rode hondas say something if you know him lol) but ever since I was a young gun i was in love with bikes but never had one of my own, just a 90cc dinli 2 stroke quad my gramps got me in mansfield on the farm when i was about 12, lol! That thing and that farm are long gone, they didnt pay taxes and ended up gettin screwed for it, lost everything, all the toys, boats, quads, golf carts, had to sell it and move to somewhere much more affordable. My family isnt the smartest but theyre pretty cool. ANYWAYS. I am 24 now and just recently had the chance to grab a bike to work on, ive spent my live doing other things like skateboarding, going to school, working full time, moving in with a girl etc. So I just found a 1990 yz125 on offerup for 200 bucks. I was dead broke at the time paying court costs n whatnot but I pulled together 100 bucks and made a deal with the guy to pay him 50 a week for the rest, since I had practically nothing and had literally just started a new job. So he was down and we met up and I got the bike. (QUESTION: Can i post any sort of htm image codes so I can post these pics throughought the thread? Cause if so im gonna edit the heck out of this thread and make it way more organized.) I brought her home. The reason it was so cheap is because the crankshaft was seized. The piston is in good condition, the cyclinder as well, no scratching or chipping, leading me to believe the issue could be in the main crank bearing. The guy I bought it off of has been in close contact, i see him once a week or so and we talk bikes and about the parts i'll need and whatnot. So my next step is to grab my next paycheck, finish paying him and bring the engine back over, split it open with him, and see if its just the bearing or whole crank assembly. Either way, pretty stoked about the deal, and the piston and cylinder being in such great shape. Im gonna attatch the pics of the bike and the engine! The cylinder head is taken off as well as the pipe and kickstart but here she is. Any input is appreciated! This is my FIRST bike and if anyone has any pointers about working on 2 strokes this old, I would REALLY appreciate it! Thanks yall Also if anyone notices anything that I am not saying, please do say something! Or if there is anything super critical to check. I plan om getting a manual when I find one and literally checking every single thing that can be loosened and tightened on it. Matt
  18. Hi there, So I know I might get some backlash about this but my 3.5 year old has a PW80 it was my sister in laws and she out grew it a few years ago so it's now my sons. He is a VERY tall 3 year old (about 46 inches tall) he can't touch the ground yet so we were thinking training wheels but we can't find any anywhere. Would anyone know where we can find any or have any suggestions as to what we can do to help him ride without having to have his aunt with him? Just a few things about my son he has been riding for about a year and a half with someone, he doesn't have training wheels on his bicycle and he loves to ride but really wants to do it on his own. Here is pictures for size reference him on a banshee and next to his bicycle that's a 16 inch.
