Any of you ever had goggle failure? Long post here, I know we partake in a dangerous sport but this one really bothers me. Never really thought losing an eye was a risk of riding. I came around a long sweeping turn and saw what looked like a pine branch across the trail. It is pretty standard to be hitting branches, limbs and all sorts of things this time of year on our singletrack trails. As I was few feet away, the branch turned into a tree... Doing about 10 MPH and too late to stop, I ducked as low as I could. My head was ripped up and a branch pierced/ripped the goggle lens on the left side and dislodged it from the frame at the same time. During that moment either the lens or another branch stabbed/punctured the meaty area in my right upper eye lid and took a chunk of skin off my nose along the way. Instant waterfall of blood, something dangling in front of my eye and numbness across the right upper side of my head ensued. (Apparently I took out a nerve, at the time I was thinking I broke something). My buddies had a first aid kit, they stopped the waterfall, patched me up best as they could. (Thanks buddies! Can't imagine what I would've done without you guys!) I slowly rode back to the truck without a helmet or goggles and poor vision. Miraculously I didn't lose my eye or even mess up any of the muscles that control the movement. All of the Docs I saw in the next few days were impressed with the damage and the lack of serious damage. They all couldn't believe I missed the eye. The damage was about a 3cm long laceration that split off into a few forks of various lengths (the flap I saw). I now have over 30 stitches in my eyelid, a numb face and I am rethinking my goggle choice... I was wearing Oakley Crowbar's. I thought they were top of the line. I didn't get the memo that they have a "stronger" line now. Scott has a similar line that is supposed to be "stronger" as well. I wonder if they would have prevented this? I am not sure any other goggle brand with standard snap in style would have performed differently. I was in contact with an ex goggle guy, he said they used to glue in the lenses... Wonder if that would have helped here? I've always been a fan of Oakley's as the fit/quality has been the best but I am seriously rethinking that and other moto goggles. At what point is safety considered into the design? Is it after style? fitment? I guess I always assumed it was safety first... Especially for eye protection? Should I ride with a full face helmet? LOL!? It really scares me to think how close I came to losing my eye and my ability to ride like I do. I had to wear an eye patch for two days, and currently my eye is nearly swollen shut. Using my less dominant eye sucks! I can't imagine living this way. Has this happened to anyone else? Please learn from my experience and think hard about your goggle choice as it doesn't take much to have the same issue. There are so many hazards out there on the track and trails that can lead to this same exact situation or worse... I do have photos if you'd like to see... I have right after it happened, after the ER, after surgery a couple days later and now... Also have the helmet cam video... Let me know if you'd like to see and maybe I'll post em. (For anyone that thinks skill was an issue here, I've been riding for over 25 years and have raced A level MX and Enduro).
