  1. Can any recommend a good ATV shop in the San Diego Area? My wife's LTZ400 is making a knocking noise in 2nd gear only. I fear a gear tooth got busted off when she popped it into second gear at high speed. Thanks

  3. Hi one and all, Do any of you do, or ever do, plastic restoration? In the process of doing a resto on a 1981 Yamaha IT 250 and the plastics are hell to come by. Soooo, I decided to restore them. Here are some samples of before and after. Tail light lens was restored as well. If anyone here does this, post them up. If you want to know what I did, then pm me as it would be too long to post here.
  4. Just thought I'd write up this report from a trailride a couple weeks ago since it was a first for me. I was riding alone on a trail I know very well but haven't ridden in a year. It was California singletrack on a side of a canyon and the past winter was a wet one so the grass had grown pretty high. I was somewhere between second and third gearish and coming up to a left bend in the trail. I didn't have the best line and saw I was coming up on a rock about a foot tall hidden in the grass and braced for impact presumably to roll over top of it. Well, turned out the rock was 90 degree wall type and the a little too tall and so the back end of the bike pitched me off. When I came off it felt a little weird like it was too soft. The bike fell off the trail and down the slop about 4 feet with the front pointing downhill. After gathering myself up and trying to lift the bike, the right handlebar (throttle) had snapped off. My bars are twinwalls with the crossbar and just to the right of the right side bracket that holds the cross bar was where the bar cleanly snapped. Wow is it hard to maneuver a bike with half a handlebar, try it. At the time I wasn't sure but it turned out the be easier to roll the bike downhill another 10 feet to a flattish ledge, that looked like it had a more gentle angle back up to the trail by careful off camber sidehilling and some luck. What I learned meanwhile was the electric starter button wires were broken. I took the seat off to disconnect the battery because the wires kept touching and turning the starter while I was trying to fix and fumble with the bike. The only idea I had was to disassemble the crossbar and use the right side bracket to clamp the broken bar back together as a kind of bandaid. Fortunately I ride with tools and it was easy to use a 5 mm hex to get that done. The bar broke in such a was that there as no ragged edge or burrs and so the two broken ends fit back together snugly and the knuckle bracket slid over the top of them and then I tightened that down like all heck. This turned out to work like a charm. I had to use the kickstarter to get the bike started and then I was able to sidehill it up and back onto the trail as hoped. I rode back to the truck and those 14 miles were very gentle and easy but there were no more problems along the way. My bike is an '05 450X and the bars were probably what originally came on the bike so they were nearly 15 years old. And probably dropping the bike a thousand times the bars had gradually fatigued. If the bars were oversized protapers and they snapped, I think I would have had to walk out without the bike. I didn't take the time to photoshoot the incident but took one pic as a 'there is a god' and then a couple pics when I got back home of the breakage and the fix. I put another pair of twinwalls onto the bike just because I was able to do this with them!

  6. Hey guys - I got a pretty good deal on a used 98 RM125 but when I pulled the cylinder to inspect, I saw a crack. When I asked the seller about it, he said he's been riding with that crack for over a year with no issues. "He says" that his mechanic told him it was not worth getting the cylinder honed / plated given the cost. What are your thoughts? I am thinking it needs to be repaired but wanted some additional opinions from experienced riders and / or mechanics. thanks for your help! Chris
  7. Hello great people of thumper talk. Well I've been having some problems with my old 2002 YZ250F. I was riding a few days ago when my bike just sputtered to a stop almost like it ran out of gas. Well gas was not the problem and I couldn't get her to run she would only fire for a second then die. I found that one of my TPS wires snapped, so I figured the reason it wasn't running was because of that wire. After soldering it back together it was still doing the same thing, so I just left it for the night. When I came back the next day whilst kicking it over I noticed all of a sudden the kicker stopped. the motor was seized. I tried turning the crankshaft at the flywheel and it would not budge forward at all but it would turn backwards or clockwise, so from here I figure I'll start taking the bike apart and figure out whats locking it up. Once I removed the cylinder head I was at a surprise when I saw this relatively large piece of brass sitting on top of my piston. I was thinking where in the hell did that come from. It was getting too late for me to go any further tonight, so I figured I would post a picture on here to see if anyone can tell me what they think this piece may go to. Is it something in the crank maybe up by the valves, from the carburetor I have no idea. It just amazes me that the piece is so intact since it was sitting on top of my piston. Also after that I did try turning the crank again, and it did turn but it felt horrible. It was very clunky and it sounded like shit might be grinding in there so I stopped. Well thanks for taking a look and if you have any insight as to where that piece might have come from please let me know. Other than that I'll be breakin her down further tomorrow.
  8. I have a 2003 dr200se. Tonight I was riding back from work on the freeway, as I was accelerating going probably 55ish I heard a weird banging noise and thought it was my stuff strapped to the back. But as I pulled over I smelled smoke and when I got off smoke was coming out of the exhaust like something was burning inside. Once it stopped smoking after like 5 or 10 minutes I tried to start it but the starter made a weird half trying noise. As I pushed it home I tried starting it periodically but always the same until eventually nothing at all, but that's probably just the battery. I know very little about bikes but I feel like it's gotta be pretty bad since the knocking and burning and it was running great before that moment. I cleaned and rebuilt the carb a few months ago after it wasn't getting fuel. I don't know if I could have screwed something up then but I ride it everyday and that was over 3 months ago. The bike died on my way home tonight. Anyone know what caused this, I couldn't find anything matching this Googleing.

  10. I strippped the threads on my 2007 ttr 90 spark plug hole. Any ideas on what the tap size is for that? I imagine i can just re tap it after taking the head off.
  11. 1997 Honda Xr650L. I was changing out my turn signals. After each one I tested the turn signal...all good up till the 3rd turn signal. After the 4th and final turn signal was changed out everything is dead except my headlight. Brake light, turn signals, horn, dash indicators lights (except for headlight indicator) and rear light are dead. I check my fuses and all are good in the fuse area by the battery. Is there another fuse I’m missing? everything was working perfectly just before. I had a turn signal broken (bulbs are OEM....I do not have LEDs) and was trying to repair and change them all to the same style. I ordered pen replacement signals.
  12. Hello, I have a strange problem. My bike won't idle / run until it's warm, then it runs and idles just fine, on top of that the oil has a lot of bubbles in it to the point of almost being foamy. I have a new head gasket on the way since there was oil around the head as well. Any ideas what could be going on? Thanks.

  14. 2008 crf450r- Attached is a picture of deep grooves in my crank case from running too wide of an o ring chain. This is after 4-6 hours of total engine riding time. The groove is probably 2-3mm deep. I realize the mistake I made and I have switched to a Narrow DID x ring chain. My question is. How can I repair this to prevent further damage? I was thinking job weld and a piece of thin aluminum or steel sheet metal. Maybe a washer in welded to the case? How thick is the case in this area and should I be worried about it cracking in the future?

So I’ve had this bike for awhile, always run good, it’s got 30k but was rebuilt less than 1k miles ago, it had a real slow leak of oil on the side of the engine, and someone is coming to trade me a Honda Grom for it, the bike runs amazing so I never bothered to do anything about the leak as it’s very very slow, not even enough to drip you’ll just occasionally see a little stream of oil on the case when you stop the bike. I decided to change the oil a little while ago and I decided to add stopleak as well to see if it would help, I added the stop leak without checking the oil because I assumed it was lower from the leak, after adding the stopleak the engine smoked? Could I have overfilled it, would that even make the engine smoke?
  16. I had recently bought a brand new 2018 CRF250R and the first few times starting it up I noticed small amounts of white smoke coming out of the exhaust when it was cold. Later that day, I had accidentally overheated it and some coolant overflowed, I filled it back up and continued to ride it and it worked perfectly fine. Whenever I start the bike from cold, some white smoke continues to come out and the exhaust is black inside. Also, not sure if it is from the weather currently but on the inside of the exhaust it seems a bit wet right after start up. Not sure what is going on

I am located in Hungary which is nearly same weather conditions like Great Britain, 4 seasons, warm-hot summers up to 36 degree Celsius, cold winters up to minus 10 degree Celsius... so you can figure. My goal is to use it in the woods, I would like to give something to the bike (average level of restoration) but I would like to have a fun factor and trouble free in return. I am 183 centimetres and 95 kilos guy... The bike was more than 10 years in pretty good shape and serviced, then a guy purchased it who did a few wear and "damage" to the bike, (luckily? he used it mainly on concrete roads, not in forest or like that.) the good: the engine was never opened, the screw-s are original, no wear mark on the screws, ALL the engine gasket-s look like factory. It starts by kick on first-second attempt cold or hot. in hot motor situations, I have to clear the flooded petrol by kicking + decompressor + ignition off, then it starts nicely. it is 15/45 now, it is TOO MUCH of torque for my taste now, it has PRETTY GOOD when not HUGE torque and power all over the range and speeds, but: main problems are: HUGE petrol consumption, about 9,3 litres on a 80 km soft trip trough woods.   18. Hey everyone. I've just started to ride my dr650 again after about a 6 month break. As I was taking it down a back road I started to hear a rattle coming from the left side of the bike. At first I could only hear it in 1st gear, after I got back to the main road I could hear it in the lower gears. Where there wasn't a whole lot of noise hiding it. It doesn't do it on smooth roads, and it doesn't do it while idling. At first I thought it might be my home made foot pegs. Alas it still did it even as I was holding them still. Also on the left side the engine is getting very hot fairly quickly. I'm currently waiting for the engine to cool off to knock things aroubd and see if i can find something loose. In the meantime I've been looking up the symptoms and some posts mention the heat shield, but since it isn't rev specific I don't think that's it. Any ideas anyone?

  20. So I’m doing some fixing on my 2001 CR 250 R. I’m going through all the issues on the off-season trying to freshen up the bike for this spring. I have watched multiple videos of people repairing radiators that were pretty bent up. Mine is slightly worse than any I’ve seen repaired, it does not leak and does not overheat (haven’t rode it in the blazing summer heat but 60-70 degrees it was fine) I guess I’m wondering has anyone repaired a crinkled up radiator successfully and did it work with no leaks or is repairing something this dented up going to have to be took to a shop? I’m basically just wanting to get it as good as possible without having to put more money in it or take it to a shop and or replace them which is inevitably going to need to be done at some point. thanks
  21. So I am rebuilding my 1984 xr200r dirt bike, but it has an xl185 engine on it, which i have a 1984 xr200r engine which needs some work done, like new cam chain. I found out that the xr250 RFVC and xr200 RFVC in 1984 shared the same frame and I am putting the 250 engine in the bike however it is not running and I would rather not spend too much on parts, I found a guy selling a bunch of parts from an xl250 and I was wondering if I could use parts from that for the xr250 engine? Is there a big difference between the two? the xl and xr engines are both rfvc
  22. Alright I need some advice. I picked up a 96 Suzuki 200DR . It ran, but rough when I got it so I did minor repairs like drin oil, oil filter, clean gas tank, plug, OEM carb rebuild kit...nothing in crankcase or piston area. Now it starts after awhile and only runs for few seconds. I checked compression and it's at 60 psi...it's suppose to be at 100 but I test it cold. So without messing with piston or valve, crankshaft...what could be issue . Can air/fuel mix mess with compression or did it just maybe shit the bed after I did repairs and the timing just made it look like my repairs are related....just need some advice on what to try.   23. Hello, So my buddy got a cheap broken down project bike (2001 Yamaha YZ 125) and we originally found that the piston had a hole on its side, and the side of the cylinder was all scratched up. We sent the cylinder to get nikasiled, got a new piston and head gasket and drained all fluids. We found that the crankcase was full of this brown milky oily substance that will not drain. We determined it's probably coolant that mixed with the oil, but we have no idea how to properly get it out. We're thinking that maybe the drain is clogged somewhere, but liquids have drained before... Has anyone ever seen this? How did you deal with it?
  24. Okay I started this question in another forum as well but i believe its dead. Im refering to post there which I will paste below then my response hope you guys can help. And thank you so much for your time. Ohgoods Post: experience is where the information is coming from. if hte float needle is worn, it can and will allow fuel to flow right past the carb, into the cylinder, past the rings, and fill the case with fuel. if the cylinder is bottom dead center, it will also fill the cylinder. depending on what position of stroke it's sitting at, it will either prevent any rotation from the starter, hydrolock, or bend /break crank and valves. it's a -very- common occurance, and the main reason why folks replace the stock petcock with a ON/OFF non vacuum operated petcock. the other part that needs to be addressed is: float height (if it's too low, it will flow fuel past if/when the ... float needle (if it's allow fuel to leak past while petcock is "ON" (for an on/off petcock) or "PRIME" (for a vacuum operated petcock)) *** the easy fix: replace ON/PRIME/OFF petcock with a raptor ON/OFF petcock replace the float needle if damaged drain oil and remove filter - light a fire with them fill with new oil and filter run engine 5-10 minutes replace oil and filter run engine 20-30 minutes replace oil and filter again remember that gas is gas and oil is oil, and they should never mix unless there are strokes of deuce My Reply: My crank case has fuel mixed with the oil because i left it in Prime over night. I know this much. I am getting ready to change the oil according to ohgoods instructions. I have let it sit like this over the week end because I had to get the oil filter and crush washers. Im getting them today. Don't worry the fuel has been shut off so its not flowing more into the crank case. But just before he gives the instructions he mentions something about the cylinder placement. Now if its placed closer to the crank case will there still be fuel in the cylinder shaft. So when I crank it after changing the oil the first time will that fuel in the shaft cause problems? If there is any fuel in the shaft or would it have finished draining into the crank case when I let it sit. Thanks,
  25. Hello, Situation: A yz125 has fallen into my lap. I don't know anything about its history, and guess it to be 2000-2001ish. It has been sitting outside for a few years, and hasn't been ridden in at least that long. It looks to be in pretty rough shape (rust on the frame, missing a kickstarter, brakes appear disconnected, busted exhaust etc.). I grew up riding dirt bikes (4 strokes) but have limited mechanical background (no background with 2 strokes). I am considering attempting to restore this bike to rideable condition as a pet project. Questions: Am I in over my head? Is this an impossible task for someone who has never worked on a 2 stroke? Any suggestions/tips on where to start? Any guesstimates on total cost and/or hours required (I realize this question is impossible to accurately answer - just looking for a rough estimate)? Any input is greatly appreciated.
