  1. Hey y'all, First post here, and it's been a tad while. I had another account a while back, but can't get back into it. Oh well. Anyways... I need a little bit of help. I'm in a tight place. I've had this 1970 Honda ct90 trail bike. Been in the family forever, excellent condition, low miles, used to run great... Until we took it to a shop and explicitly told them to change the air cleaner out among other things (the filter was old and crumbling and wasn't doing much good regardless). Well, they didn't change it and the engine over time sucked in a bunch of that old foam. We didn't notice anything wrong until smoke started coming out the pipe. So we broke down and did a top end (just the rings) and yes, changed that air cleaner out the right way. We got the parts from a dealership (big mistake-they gave us the wrong piston rings) and threw it together. More smoke than before. So we broke down again and tore it apart for a second time, more meticulously this time. We bored the cylinder and put a new piston and rings. Yes, the correct ones this time. .025 over. Put it together, fired it up...and lo and behold, more smoke than ever before. Clouds of the stuff. We were frustrated, but not as frustrated as when we did it extremely meticulously for a third time and got the same result. Checked the cylinder, dead on. checked the rings in the bore, dead on. Clocked the rings. Symbols on all three rings facing up (is it any other way?) and this time, replaced the valve seal and both valves. Ground new seats. Just to be absolutely sure. Oddly enough, this bike does not have an oil seal for the intake valve, I checked it twice. Still smokes like the dickens. Well folks, my first rebuild and maybe my last. Could I just have gotten two sets of bad rings? I must have done something wrong, but I just can't think of what. Rings and seals replaced. If you could offer some cycle wisdom, it would be greatly appreciated.
  2. So I am currently working on a 1997 CR125 and plan to make a full race build on it. But I have been noticing that there are not very many aftermarket parts the biggest being the plastics and graphics for it due to the frame,tank,sub frame, etc. I was wondering if its possible to put that engine into a CR125 frame anywhere from 98-07 and how hard that would be to do. I have a welder but I am not confident enough to weld new motor mounts. If you guys could help me out with this that would be great.
  3. hi 2 stroke lovers , im restoring my 93 kx 250 and im trying to use nos oem parts , where is everyone getting their vintage nos parts from these days , iv been scouring ebay , facebook , and a few other sites and been able to track down a few bits and pieces , i know there getting old and parts are hard to find but i know theres still a lot of good stuff out there its just knowing where to look , any help appreciated , if anyone one on here has any nos parts for sale let me know , thanks for your time
  4. Hello everyone, I am new here so i apologize if there is already a topic about the Honda MT250 Elsinore dirt bike. I am just now starting a restoration on my 1976 MT250 Elsinore and I am trying to go through the bike now and see what is re usable and what ill need to replace. Im having trouble finding a good source for parts, possibly because they are now hard to find? im not sure, but i was hoping someone could shed some light on this. Im pretty sure my wiring harness is shot, and needs to either be remade or replaced if i can find a new remake of it. I also know ill be needed new bushings, seals, chain etc.... One more question! haha........ My bike doesnt currently have lights or a speedometer ( im not sure if it ever did, or if it was removed). Do i need to do any upgrades to the electrical system to add lights and a speedometer? Any info would be greatly appreciated
  5. Thinking about parting ways with my 2002 Xr400R (second gen). It’s been a great bike, but I want the Husqy 350 or new Honda 250 and mod it like this XR. I’m a pro rider and I’ve used this ol gal as my endurocross bike for 3 years now. But you know that means it has all the proper upgrades. 12:1 Namura compression and stainless steel top end from the 2014 Honda QUAD series. yep; it’s bigger than the 440 kit. Lmao. Fits!!! (bigger capacity electrical system with it) stage 2 hot cam cut at a custom angle to give max low end power and come back for more at 4000-7000 rpm area. (That was a beach to measure) crank and connecting rod changed out for Pro-X. mikuni pumper 64mm carb tuned by mikuni mechanic for my bike. new clutch and basket airbox and oil lines increased in size for better flow. (Still uses regular filters) stock exhaust reemed performs better than others in cold climates. New bearings and bushings all around. ALL! it has a street kit, just needs put back on. Fully functions. front forks recently changed back to like-new OEM for restoration purposes. fenders cut out for better airflow and now they don’t rub tires. frame recently painted black with Line-X over original crap. like-new brakes and rotors. legit NEW seat as of 8-4-20 New shinko tires (mud terrain)
  6. Hi, My DRZ-400 was stolen a couple years ago and they trashed the electricals on the bike and did some other minor damages. Due to the situation I was in as a student, etc, etc. I did not have the resources or capability to fix these issues so the bike has been staying in the garage at my dads house for the last 2-3 years. I am now in a position where I have the time and resources to do something about it(even though the capability and knowledge is still lacking) and I am looking for some advice. I had the bike fired up this winter connected to a car-battery so I know the engine is capable of running even though it didn't run very clean for the minute it was running. Which I guess is to be expected from an engine that has not been cranked for a couple years. I wanted to start tearing the bike apart and order up a new battery, chain, sprockets, oil and coolant. I have started working on the wiring since there are some issues with the display, blinkers, etc. But I am guessing there are a multitude of things I should do during this process - which is why I wanted to create a post here and ask for tips from any experienced owners. Probably have to look at the forks after sitting for such a long time, cleaning the carb and more perhaps? FYI: It's a 2004 DRZ-400S with 3x3, FCR 39, MRD-exhaust, 434 big bore. The piston and cylinder were fairly new and the bottom end of the engine is a 2005 with low miles after the original was shattered due to unknown reasons. I'm happy for any feedback on this and will post pictures during the process if anyone is interested, thanks. 🙂
  7. I picked up a 1975 MT250 elsinore yesterday, and its a solid bike to start a restoration. Frame and motor is great. Runs, but needs some work. Throttle cable is junk, and its idling too high but i cant adjust the cable because its broken and sticky. Killswitch is also junk, so a stuck throttle scares me right now. Headlight is mismatched and not wired up (nothing is wired up all wires are cut). Missing taillight and blinkers are not original. Side plate is there, but the piece that holds it on is missing so it falls off. it runs and drives, but would like to sort out the throttle cable and killswitch before i start doing any carb tuning to get it crisp. seat cover has a burnt section from the exhaust... do these usually have something to keep it off of the exhaust when its up? Its missing the latch for the seat as well, so im using a nut and washer right now. Whats the general consensus with the oil injection? Cap it and premix, or rely on the injection? Anyone with some knowledge of these bikes is greatly appreciated, because mine is very limited. Im mechanically inclined and excited to dive in, but will definitely need some help along the way.
  8. Hey guys, I really appreciate you taking the time to read this and possibly give me some help. I have a 1979 Honda XL185s that I have rebuilt and am to the point of wiring it up. I picked up the bike for $50 and it came with no wiring. I wanted to do custom anyways. I am converting to 12v with an antigravity 4cell 12v battery, 12v regulator, along with new oem style CDI, new coil, new pulse generator, ITS ALL NEW and fresh. I am not running any lights, all I need is to wire up the ignition and charging system, kickstart only. Problem is my new reg/rec has different colors than oem with no instructions, the coil I have has an extra wire compared to oem, I’m running a simple two wire on/off keyed ignition switch, subtle differences that leave me confused on where to go. Long story shortish, here is a list of what I have with color of each wire Any help you could give as to where to go with what is much appreciated, I know a few are probably obvious and simple but I’ll list them anyways for full coverage. Ignition switch (in-line fuse coming off of red wire, going straight to pos on batt) Black Red Reg/rec 2 yellow Red Black CDI Blk with female blade connector Two green Red/blk Blue/white Blk/white Pulse generator Blue Green Coil Blk/yellow Green Alternator Yellow/white Yellow Pink Red/black
  9. Hey gents! I just picked up a 1986 CR250R barn find and thought I'd post a few threads with the clean up/restoration process. I have some experience in frame off restorations of quads (all 2T's), but I'm also smart enough to know that I don't know. That being said, I invite any and all feedback on techniques and specific process critique with regard to this specific chassis. I've never done a bike, but I couldn't let the winningest bike in motocross history go to the junkyard just yet. Here are some pics of the initial eval and disassembly! Let me know what you think!
  10. Anyone have any source recommendations for a complete engine gasket and bearings kit for a 1986 CR250R? I've always gone with Tusk or Cometic, but I can't seem to find a kit that's all inclusive. Not against buying a complete gasket kit separate from a bearings kit, but can't locate either for some reason. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Once sourced, we're looking at a maiden voyage within 48 hours!

  12. Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster. I bought myself a KDX200E for $400 bucks with the claim it needed a top end. Most of my experience has been with road-going machines and I thought this would be a good way to get started. Well, diving into this bike I have determined it will need to be fully rebuilt top to bottom, for my own assurance of dependability and safety... I tend to ask too many questions too quickly so Ill start with some simple ones and go from there! I am very capable in lots of DOING lots of things mechanical, electrical, body etc but I just need advice and some guidance 🙂 With that I prefer the most cost effective route especially since I can do most myself. For example I'm buying most of the bearings at a local machine shop (genuine Timken for a better price than through the dealer) and I plan on 3D printing the smaller plastic parts and routing an aluminum skid plate and headlight shroud. 1. At some point this bike has been bored and sleeved I know there's no way back now but any advice on how to remedy this situation as best without buying another cylinder? like forged vs cast pistons, how often to change rings etc. 2. After pulling the top end out I can hear a little clunking when pulling up on the rod in TDC so main bearings will need to be replaced as well as seals because there was oil when I took the stator cover off too. My question is how to determine if I'll need a new crank? I'd rather have it rebuilt instead of buying a new one. also are main bearings special or can I get them at the machine supply shop? (just to reiterate they have high quality bearings and can order just about anything) 3. My goal is to make this bike street legal, I live in a state neighboring South Dakota 🙂. The original stator is AC and only pushes like 35w (or 30, cant remember) so I'd like to upgrade that. Thinking economically, could I rewind the stator I have for DC, and push enough power to run lights/speedo? I'm planning on using LEDs all around and tying a battery in, https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2128354 Ideally I'd like everything to run mainly off the battery and the battery being charged by the bike. So I guess my questions is Would it be better to wire for more watts, keeping AC and using a modern rectifier/regulator combo and use that to charge the battery OR rewire for DC and do the same process minus the rectifier OR just buy and upgraded system? 4.For those of you who've made their own seats, what type and thickness plastic did you use under the vinyl? I'm making my own seat cover and don't want wet butt after it rains 🙂 5. Lastly (for now) is a long term question and that would be good software, free or otherwise to make my own performance pipe. or whether its even worth it or not. I love the look of a fat chrome FMF pipe but a blued homemade pipe would look so much better with this sumo build. I know some might think I'm 'ruining' this trail bike but don't fret! almost all parts are getting powder and the sumo wheels will be a separate pair and she will definitely still see trials! I'll post pics when I get the chance!
  13. Hello everyone, I’ve searched the discussions and have only found some old threads. I recently purchased a project bike 1990 yz125. I’m having a hard time finding plastics kits and certain parts even on EBay. Do any of you have any suggestions on where to look. Also maybe a wiring diagram for the ignition system. Most wires were cut and spliced together so I want to make sure they are correct because I’m getting no spark. Thanks in advance.

I am located in Hungary which is nearly same weather conditions like Great Britain, 4 seasons, warm-hot summers up to 36 degree Celsius, cold winters up to minus 10 degree Celsius... so you can figure. My goal is to use it in the woods, I would like to give something to the bike (average level of restoration) but I would like to have a fun factor and trouble free in return. I am 183 centimetres and 95 kilos guy... The bike was more than 10 years in pretty good shape and serviced, then a guy purchased it who did a few wear and "damage" to the bike, (luckily? he used it mainly on concrete roads, not in forest or like that.) the good: the engine was never opened, the screw-s are original, no wear mark on the screws, ALL the engine gasket-s look like factory. It starts by kick on first-second attempt cold or hot. in hot motor situations, I have to clear the flooded petrol by kicking + decompressor + ignition off, then it starts nicely. it is 15/45 now, it is TOO MUCH of torque for my taste now, it has PRETTY GOOD when not HUGE torque and power all over the range and speeds, but: main problems are: HUGE petrol consumption, about 9,3 litres on a 80 km soft trip trough woods.   17. Hello, Situation: A yz125 has fallen into my lap. I don't know anything about its history, and guess it to be 2000-2001ish. It has been sitting outside for a few years, and hasn't been ridden in at least that long. It looks to be in pretty rough shape (rust on the frame, missing a kickstarter, brakes appear disconnected, busted exhaust etc.). I grew up riding dirt bikes (4 strokes) but have limited mechanical background (no background with 2 strokes). I am considering attempting to restore this bike to rideable condition as a pet project. Questions: Am I in over my head? Is this an impossible task for someone who has never worked on a 2 stroke? Any suggestions/tips on where to start? Any guesstimates on total cost and/or hours required (I realize this question is impossible to accurately answer - just looking for a rough estimate)? Any input is greatly appreciated.
  18. So I'm new to the forum plz don't be hard on me if I say something dumb hahaha Today I bought a 2001 kx 125 that is in fairly good cosmetic condition but needs a top and bottom rebuild. This is the third bike I've bought for me and my brother to pick away at as a project. Im 18 and I'm still in school so I don't have lots of money so if you guys could point me in the most cost effective way that doesn't sacrifice too much quality that'd be cool (don't roast me for being cheap I know ya gotta pay to play and I'd rather it last than do this again a week after I get it running) . It for sure needs a rod kit and entire top end (cylinder has some digs) but I'm gonna do crank bearings and all the seals while I'm in there for peace of mind?. i just have a few questions. Best place (within Canada preferably) to get a cylinder replated? It came with "DEP" pipe and silencer what's the deal on those? is there any disadvantages of going with a rod kit rather than the entire crank assembly? i noticed pro-x parts are quite a lot cheaper than others.. is that a viable option?   19. Hey all, Started first rebuild today. Thought I would document it. Not a mechanic and definitely gonna screw up. Bought manual. I guess I'm going to replace all bearings and bushings, rebuild engine, new plastics, etc. Came with Athena head, don't know of it's a big bore. Anyways here are some pics.   20. Hey guys! My name is Andrew and I'm new here from Northwest WI and just got an early Christmas present. My boss had an old CR500 in his dad's barn in WA that nobody could get working. I ended up getting it from him for free for a favor. Flew out to WA for work, bought a 2001 F350 7.3l dually (rust free unlike stuff from WI), threw the bike in the back, and drug it home to WI. My plan is to completely restore it (with small modifications) this winter. I've already started making progress and will add more as I get time. Just wanted to start a project thread so you guys can motivate me to finish it!
  21. Has anyone tried to remove the chrome plating on their pipe? I wanted to get a works raw finish pipe for my 2000 CR250R , but FMF ,Pro Circuit, Bill's no longer make the non plated works pipes for the 2000-2001 anymore. I have a FMF SST and it is in pretty good shape still it only has a few small dings in the expansion chamber. I did see a guy on You Tube do some chrome plating removal using his "special" chemicals and using a variable low voltage power unit for what looks like a electrolysis process to remove the chrome, then a second "special" chemical with a different voltage to remove the nickle plating under the chrome. Sadly I don't have his "special" chemicals nor a variable low voltage power supply just sitting around. Any suggestions on how to DIY it at home? Thanks
  22. I wanted to start this as a place to ask questions about the little things I can't figure out because I never saw the bike assembled?! My son had outgrown his XR100 and I managed to find what I hope turns out to be a terrific deal on a bike in a box... or rather several boxes. It is a 1998 CR125R which someone had started a rebuild on and walked away from. The guy I purchased from claimed that it was literally a barn find and that he bought is super cheap by scrounging around the barn collecting everything that looked like it cam from the bike. It had a new Hot Rods connecting rod and crank installed in the bottom end, but when they went to put on the right hand case, they cross threaded the bolt that holds on the primary drive gear to the clutch. They went ahead and tried to crank down the side cover with it like that and broke the side case. From there it looks like they just walked away. The cylinder was off and scored up pretty bad, a brand new piston was on it, but not ring, etc, etc, etc. I re-tapped the hole for the primary, picked up a case cover off ebay and resolved that issue. I had a new sleeve installed putting it back to the stock bore and have a new piston and rings in it. I drained and bled front and rear brakes, rebuild that front forks, greased or replaced all the bearings except for the head (which are smooth). It was missing all side covers and rad shrouds, but he can starting riding it without those until some come up on ebay. It was also missing the exhaust. I found one that somebody had as part of a CR500 into a CR125 aluminum frame project. I think it will work, but they'd hack off the rear mount on the expansion chamber cutting a couple of holes in it. I welded those shut, but still need to work on a rear hanger and a way to mount the muffler as the bracket and the frame mount don't line up? We started it for the first time yesterday to begin heat-cycling to seat the rings. Starts up first kick But pisses coolant out of the telltale and from around the head gasket I'm going to call the machine shop tomorrow to be sure that they decked the head AND the cylnder, if so I'll try a new head gasket. If that doesn't work then I'll attempt to lap them on granite or get the shop to redo them although won't be happy if I have to pull the cylinder again! I'm going to pull the water pump and check that I got the new seals in correctly and see if the shaft is damaged. Thanks for wading through all this. I appreciate any input and advice! Mark
  23. Hey guys, I just bought an XR650L (my 2nd) that had been used in enduro events for nearly 10 years. From there, it sat in a garage for about 5 years. I took it under my wing, and am trying to bring it back to life. It employs a high-compression piston, aftermarket cam, and 38mm Mikuni flat-slide carb. I cleaned the carb and entire fuel system, changed the oil, and replaced the spark plug, air filter and battery. Surprisingly, it started after only a few tries! Not surprisingly, it won't start or idle without choke. It idles high, and sputters until it dies when I wean off the choke or twist the throttle. It will rev smoothly with choke on. I'm new to the forum, thanks a TON for any input whatsoever!
  24. Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum but have already been able to find a massive amount of great info. I figured I'd start a thread on my new project, a '74 XL100. I don't have much experience with working on bikes, so I hope I can get input from those with more knowledge than myself. I picked this little beast up locally for a very affordable price. The previous owner painted the frame, frame and tank etc years ago but it has been sitting for at least 4 years unused. It seems mostly complete but not running, however engine isn't seized and compression seems ok. It most noticeably needs an exhaust, clutch and throttle cable (existing one very worn), a carb slide, rear indicators, new tyres and a points cover. It looks like the wheels have some corrosion, particularly the front, so will need to find a set somewhere. I've ordered the new cables and a carb rebuild kit and a battery (I know I don't need one to kick over the bike though). I'm also looking for an affordable workshop manual. It seems as though the K0 XL is very similar to the late SL100, so might just grab an SL manual for now as they seem easier to find. So anyway, here is a photo of it. I hope to get riding sooner rather than later! Starting to figure out my plan of attack.
  25. So after finishing my 1992 RM125 project bike I decided to buy another RM. This time it’s a 1995 model I picked up for €100 (around $120) The bike was left outside for many years with the engine kept indoors after a powervalve slider broke. Anyway here it is & what I’ve done so far. The engine bottom end seems good, so I have ordered a new top end kit and a water pump kit. Once I know the bike runs good, then I will start ordering the behemoth of parts it needs.
