  3. Hello all! This is my first post so forgive me if I miss any formalities. Just got my hands on a 01 rm250, I have been running through the forums here looking for info but I feel that my need for information is too broad, probably because this is my first smoker. I'm a handy guy though so I feel that I shouldn't have many issues getting this thing in top shape (with a little help of course). The bike has a few small issues. First and foremost being that it is quite hard to start when cold. This I learned the hard way with no boots and a bruised foot. Second issue is there seems to be a bog mid throttle, its like it falls on its face right before it hits the band. Mods include a fmf shorty and vforce reeds. I have went through the carb and checked the reeds. One set of the reeds was really loose when I got them off so I snugged those up and put it back together. This helped some. I have been through the forums many times, the issue is I don't see many 01s with these issues and im unsure of the model changes through the years. Will post pics when I get off work. Thanks for any insight.
  4. hello all please feel free to comment, any help appreciated! photos : https://photos.app.goo.gl/gWmBoGzpRj0SG1No2 I just purchased a 2004 honda XR400R. I am located in Hungary which is nearly same weather conditions like Great Britain, 4 seasons, warm-hot summers up to 36 degree Celsius, cold winters up to minus 10 degree Celsius... so you can figure. My goal is to use it in the woods, I would like to give something to the bike (average level of restoration) but I would like to have a fun factor and trouble free in return. I am 183 centimetres and 95 kilos guy... The bike was more than 10 years in pretty good shape and serviced, then a guy purchased it who did a few wear and "damage" to the bike, (luckily? he used it mainly on concrete roads, not in forest or like that.) the good: the engine was never opened, the screw-s are original, no wear mark on the screws, ALL the engine gasket-s look like factory. It starts by kick on first-second attempt cold or hot. in hot motor situations, I have to clear the flooded petrol by kicking + decompressor + ignition off, then it starts nicely. it is 15/45 now, it is TOO MUCH of torque for my taste now, it has PRETTY GOOD when not HUGE torque and power all over the range and speeds, but: main problems are: HUGE petrol consumption, about 9,3 litres on a 80 km soft trip trough woods. (carb and fuel cock are dripping, seal and gasket set on the way to repair) or do I have a worn cylinder/piston? :-( how to figure out? measure compression? what value is okay? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Carburetor-Carb-Complete-Master-Repair-Rebuild-Kit-Honda-XR400R-96-04/322300058028?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/XR650R-XR-650R-XR-250R-XR-400R-Honda-NOS-XR-650-Fuel-Petcock-Valve/171885885016?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 very bad condition of bearings in the front steering and rear swingarm/suspension (both suspensions also set very badly, nearly none suspension, all settings on LOW or random), roar-ing sound from the bearings of the swingarm/suspension, knocking movement of the steering http://www.ebay.com/itm/Moose-Racing-Motorcycle-Steering-Stem-Bearing-Kit-22-1021-0410-0029/261382677475?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 knocking sound on idle, I "think" the sound comes NOT from the top area (NOT from under the gas tank, where a valve clearence sound would be assumed) but from the bottom, like the area of the generator.. where your right foot is at the pedals. will investigate this. (video later, see photos gallery) listen to the videos, COLD engine : https://photos.app.goo.gl/Fz6RVvzm4GrFWmTF2 assumed root causes of the knocking: timing chain could be stretched? timing chain tensioner could be worn? just guessing at this time. OF COURSE the valve clearance will be checked too. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Honda-Timing-Cam-Chain-Tensioner-14520-KCY-671-TRX400EX-TRX400X-XR400R/121718966212?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 QUESTION 1: -do you think this will fit? sadly, the original speedo is broken, also the speedo cable was ripped out of the speedo mechanic so I think I can forget the original speedo: http://www.ebay.com/itm/0-180km-h-Motorcycle-LED-Backlight-Odometer-Tachometer-Speedometer-Gauge-Black-/232320581366?fits=Model%3AXR400R&hash=item361762bef6:g:tNMAAOSwX61ZCFzZ&vxp=mtr question 2: which one is better for restoring rear suspension/ swingarm? http://www.ebay.de/itm/PIVOT-WORKS-SWING-ARM-BEARING-KIT-HONDA-XR400R-1996-2004-PWSAK-H21-004/231369574277?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648 or http://www.ebay.de/itm/Honda-XR400R-Rear-Suspension-Linkage-Bearing-Kit-By-AllBalls-Racing-/171640116010?epid=1923797959&hash=item27f68c532a:g:73wAAOSwcu5UOXx2 other pieces I ordered to smaller/bigger restoration: I try a 16T (now 15/45) front sprocket, I want less torque, more speed on street, less rev of engine http://www.ebay.com/itm/PBI-COUNTERSHAFT-STEEL-SPROCKET-16T-Fits-Honda-TRX400EX-Sportrax-XR400R-383-16/261705500086?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Locking-Washer-Sprocket-Honda-XR-400-R/263229597576?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Set-of-4-Intake-Exhaust-Valve-Stem-Seals-Honda-See-Fitment-Chart/292004388869?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motocycle-MX-wide-Black-Foot-Pegs-For-Honda-XR650L-93-09-XR650R-00-07/162587846682?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Pcs-Foldable-Spherical-Motorcycles-ATV-Handlebar-Rearview-Mirrors-10mm-Thread/311969432205?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Edge-Cut-Toe-Shift-Lever-with-Shifter-Pegs-Fit-For-Harley-Road-King-Road-Glide/192184760626?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motion-Pro-Throttle-Tube-Sleeve-Replacement-KLX250R-KLX300-OEM-01-0080-06-1080/261706012407?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/WPS-56-2352-Clutch-Lever-Black-56-2352/232335165099?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oil-Filter-Fit-For-Honda-CBR250R-XR200R-XR250R-XR400R-XR600R-XR650R-XR650L-XR250/120911922535?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Magnetic-Engine-Oil-Drain-Bolt-Plug-for-Kawasaki-KLX125-D-Tracker125-2010-2015/131753358824?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=431128487224&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 cheers Marton. 5. Hey guys, Big questions to ask. I got a superstomp 140 pitbike, unfortunately its been sat for years now. But I want to get it started again as never got to have as much fun as I wanted. What I need to know? CAN it be restored, and what do I need to do. I know fuel tank and carb needs a clean, breaks to be bled, oil changed. Can you reverse corrosion? And remove rust? I know some bushes, bearings and washers will need to be replaced. Wheres the battery? Will the ignition be okay? Guys I'm aware I'm a rookie. I've dealt with cars but not bikes. Because of lockdown I cant get it seen and thought I'd make a start. Any advice will be so much appreciated. Cheers
  6. Hello Team: I just bought a 2008 WR250r that has only 567 miles on it. It's bone stock and runs fine. Sounds a little weak when it tries to start up and when I turn the key it I don't hear it priming up. It's been sitting in a garage for years. I know it needs new tires (they are barely worn but have turned plastic-y from age) and the bike is super grimy around the typical areas from sitting idle for a long long time. All recall work performed. Fuel pump and Stator.. I'd love some advice on what my priorities should be to get this puppy a fresh start to life. What are the priorities here? Should I take it in for inspection? What would you all do? Also, can you recommend a great cleaner to get this puppy de greased and spangly again? (I'd like to give it a good cleaning first) Any input would be greatly appreciated and thanks! TMD
  7. Hey guys, I am really needing some good advice here from anybody who has ever owned or rebuilt classic Yamaha 2 strokes (1989 - 1994). I live in South Africa, and bought a little farm thumper while on holiday this past weekend. It was advertised as a DT175 which is a bike that is easy to get parts for down here. It has been cosmetically customized and looks pretty darn cool... and lets face it, all the old classic Yamaha 2T engines look the same at a glance! So I genuinely thought it was a naked DT. The bike had no papers, and was used purely for the farmer to putt around on his farm. The only things needing attention was the stator cover which had snapped in half - this was visibly noticeable, and a little leak from a badly resealed gasket (both generally easy and cheap to fix here). The bike was still running and idling fine, started first kick, and I had a little ride around the farm before loading the bike up onto my pickup and heading off, thinking I could fix this thing up nicely in no time for next to nothing, and have what we call down in SA "a nuwe speelgoed" (A new plaything) for the weekends when I am not riding my beloved and reliable DRZ400SM. SO, I get home and decide to contact our local Yamaha branch, out of interest, to find out the history of the bike before I start fiddling (Don't ask me why I did not do this all before I bought the bike - It was a spur of the moment purchase, and was sold to me for dirt cheap!). I send off the VIN and engine number. Comes back, and this little freakin' turd turns out to be a 1989 TDR180!! WHAT. But now I am stuck as we do not really have TDR's down here - and I have never even seen one myself. Long story short - What alternative could I use as a stator cover? Do any other old Yamaha 2T model stator covers fit the TDR or share similar engine parts? Ordering from Ebay is so expensive thanks to my country being in junk status due to a junk president. So the shipping costs more than the actual item does, and our customs is a joke too. Yamaha has also advised me that this stator cover has been discontinued. I have put up local ads looking for parts, contacted FB 2T groups, and local shops. Nothing for TDR's has come back yet. Any advice or sharing of experience is welcome! 🙂
  8. What’s up guys. Just picked up a 97 rm 80 project bike. It needs a cylinder to complete the engine but I’m having a hell of a time finding a used one on eBay or anywhere for that matter. Any ideas? Also, any information on years with the same motor would be helpful. Engine diagrams on aftermarket sites looks like 91-2001 are the same. Can anyone confirm? Thanks for the help.
  9. Hey guys! My name is Andrew and I'm new here from Northwest WI and just got an early Christmas present. My boss had an old CR500 in his dad's barn in WA that nobody could get working. I ended up getting it from him for free for a favor. Flew out to WA for work, bought a 2001 F350 7.3l dually (rust free unlike stuff from WI), threw the bike in the back, and drug it home to WI. My plan is to completely restore it (with small modifications) this winter. I've already started making progress and will add more as I get time. Just wanted to start a project thread so you guys can motivate me to finish it!
  10. Hi people, I know very little on how to do what I want to do regards to putting together a 2nd hand ec 300 I'm making videos to entertain others and myself during the build Any help would be great in the weeks to come Here is the link to my 1st episode of the Gas Gas Ec 300 Build Series Enjoy https://youtu.be/aMTOXVhyikI
  11. So here's the deal. I have an old 1972 Honda cb175 that I picked up for 50$. Bike was in great shape to be sitting as long as it had. Motor was locked up, got it unstuck. Bla bla bla. Here's the problem. Spark plug(plugs) were seized up in the aluminum head. Ended up having to drill the remainder of the plus out. Screw extractors of different sizes and styles didn't work. Trust me I tried them. But can't go back in time to "try" another way now. So I was going to re-tap the holes but unaware of what I was doing I drilled them into an oval. They are also drilled possibly too big to repair. Heli cores or helix cores, whatever its called, would they work because the ones I got from a friend seem to be too small, and too course thread. I don't have the money for a new cylinder head. Plus the only place I can find 1 is on eBay. I hate buying from eBay, but that another story. Any help here? I am afraid I've really screwed up with this one. These bikes are really rare to find. And too old to find after market parts. What can I do at this point? Can I take the head somewhere to get the hole filled back in and threaded in the right place? Use Heli cores? If so how? I don't know how to use them.
