  1. I recently bought a 1986 XR250R that had a broken shifter shaft. I already have the new part but i'm having some difficulty splitting the two crank cases. I have the top end completely dismantled and I was able to split the two cases about 3/4 of an inch but something is not allowing to split all the way. I haven't pulled the clutch and would prefer not to, I just need to know the simplest way to split the two cases I don't have any specialized tools or anything like that. Is it possible to pull off the flywheel to split the cases and ignore the clutch all together? Thank you in advance for any replies.
  2. bought a bike and shifter is set low. Trying to remove it so I can replace. I got the bolt off but I cant pull the actual shufter off the pin. It moves freeley and nothing is broken. Bike is a 2012 crf450r. Any ideas how to remove it?
  3. hey guys. Recently bought my first dirtbike, a 2007 crf150f. ran great for the first week then all of a sudden i started having some issues with the shifter. i can shift between 1st and neutral okay but when you go into 2nd the shifter gets stuck in the up position, and doesn’t come back down like it should. therefore when you go th shift into 3rd the shifter is already up and can’t go up anymore so you don’t shift into 3rd and when you let off the clutch you get dumped back into 2nd. was kinda scary the first time since this is my first bike i’ve been riding not even a week when this happened. my first thought was to tighten the shifter but that didn’t do much. then i kinda just let the bike sit for a week or so since i was mad that it broke so soon. yesterday i decided to try to ride it again. i can go through all the gears still which i tested on the street but it was sketchy because i had to manually kick the shifter back down into the middle position every time i upshifted. and if i kicked it too far down it would downshift and id probably crash. anyone know what this could be???
  4. Hello, just looking for some advice on where this oil leak can be coming from. It is around the shift shaft area, maybe a little to the left. After reading around on here a bit, I ordered a CS seal kit after I found the sprocket nut loose. I pulled the sprocket, noticed the area behind it was dry, and replaced the seal anyways. After riding a bit, I noticed I still had the leak. I could obviously tell it was not coming from the CS seal, as I cleaned that area good and it was still dry. Now my best guess is the shifter or the white piece to the left of the shifter(someone help me on what that is lol). Also there was a drop of oil on the washer around the shift shaft I wiped off earlier.
  5. Hello everyone, I'm going to try to be as concise and specific as possible. My 2006 KX85 will shift fine from neutral into 1st and then 2nd. When in 2nd it seems to get stuck and does not want to go into 3rd or higher. After doing some research I just knew it had to be the shifter return spring.. Well after removing the right side case I was able to get a look at, and remove to inspect, the shifter return spring. (Big spring located in the lower portion of the case on shift shaft) It seems to be fine. Also, I read somewhere on the interwebs that not having a washer on the drain bolt will sometimes cause it to contact the shift drum and not allow shifting. So I made sure I had a washer on the drain plug. When I shift through the gears by hand, if I shift and then manually return the shifter slightly downward it seems to be fine and will then shift into the next gear. I thought for sure it would be the return spring but it just seems to be in too good of condition (very stiff) to be the culprit. If anyone has experience with this or has any idea what else may be the issue I would greatly appreciate the input. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help. I will update as I dig deeper into the issue
  6. Hi, I've been slowly rebuilding a 1972 Honda xl250 over the last few months and I finally got it started and idling today. But I quickly ran into two problems I hope you can help me figure out. 1. The bike won't shift out of neutral. It feels/sounds like it shifts into 1st and 2nd, but nothing engages and the neutral light stays on. I've taken apart and cleaned just about everything inside the right crankcase and installed new clutch and throttle cables before I ever even started it. I have noticed the bike was clearly layed down on its left side (broken clutch lever, bent shift pedal), so maybe the external shifter mechanism is bent? Where should I start figuring out the shifting issue? 2. not as important, but I'm noticing an oil leak out of the engine fins on the left side. It seems to be originating from about the 3rd fin down. Any ideas where this is coming from? Thanks for the help.
  7. I replaced the clutch on my 2003 Jeep Wrangler x 4.0L and doing so required me to remove the shifter from the transmission in order to drop it down. When I went to put everything back together including the shifter, it would only grab 3rd, 4th, and 5th and not the other gears..it also felt very tight and had no side to side play. Any idea what went wrong? Does something need to be aligned in there? Appreciate any info!!
  8. Hi everyone, I was riding my CR85 today and I washed out and landed on the left side, the shifter side. After getting up and collecting myself I tried to get the bike in neutral to start it and it wouldn’t go. The shifter moves but the gears don’t change. I’m thinking it’s the shift shaft or shift drum. Anything helps, Thanks!! Rick
  9. Why can i NOT find an extended shift lever anywhere? seems like they were pretty common in the mid 2000's, but every where i look now they are sold out or unavailable. anyone have a link for a 1" extended shift lever thats not ridiculously over priced or that is available?
  10. I have a 2001 yz250 that was running fine but had a water pump leak, I ordered a water pump replacement kit and replaced it. when i crunk up the bike it wouldn't go into 1st gear, But went into 2nd gear and wouldn't go back into 1st or neutral. So now the bike is stuck in 2nd gear I thought it was because I had a brand new shifter on the bike but it has grip and won't budge. I don't know what caused it to jam in gear. Looking at others with this problem it might be the shift forks. Do I have to split the cases to change it?? ...or what's the easiest way to find out what the problem is and fix it??
  11. I have a 2007 xcf 250 that I recently took apart, I went as far a splitting the cases because my gearbox was locking up (no damage to the gears but turns out there were pieces of metal caught in the gears). I put the whole thing back together and now I have a huge problem, when shifting, it wont stop at 1st gear, it will continue to shift down to sixth gear, restarting the shift sequence from the top. No idea what it is, I really need help.
  12. Hello, I have been stuck on a couple issues with the motor from a 2003 KTM 450 MXC. I purchased the entire bike with the motor in a box. The motor was assembled a couple of years ago and is going to be used on a racing go kart. After extensive searches (and financial & family setbacks), it is time to reach out for help. ISSUE 1- I first had an issue with the clutch lever being very difficult to pull and it seems like the transmission is not disengaging when it is squeezed. I rebuilt the master cylinder and it was minutely easier to pull. I read a post that the clutch plates may be stuck together. I found some extra grease used to hold the clutch pins on some of the plates,so I wiped them down and re assembled. With the cover off, I pulled the clutch lever and it pulled firm yet much easier and I could see the clutch move, something it labored to do beforehand. I buttoned everything back up and tried to shift into gear. It only seemed to engage in 2 gears. While engaged, I pulled the clutch lever and it did not disengage the gear. This will be shifted by hand. ISSUE 2- The electric start is not working when the button is pressed. I put in a new battery, replaced the switch (combo orange/black), replaced the starter solenoid, and replaced the fuses in the solenoid. I need to get a multi meter to get the numbers, but with my test light I have power to the starter solenoid and power to 2 of the 4 wires in the harness that connects to the solenoid. When I press the "orange" button, nothing changes. When the "black" button is pressed, I have power to all 4 wires in the solenoid harness. However, no power from the solenoid to the starter. I ran a jumper wire from the red wire to the starter directly, it started to turn over. So, I guess I'm trying to figure out if there is something that is preventing it from sending power to the starter like a key switch or on/off somewhere. This is the factory harness that came off of the bike. Trying to decipher the electronic diagram, I am thinking I may be missing a ground, maybe off of the voltage regulator? Any help is greatly appreciated, need to get this thing figured out. I will try to get back to respond as soon as I can, I am working a ton of hours this summer. Thanks! Steve T
  13. Yo Mates: I've got a shift lever where just the tip has gone flimsy. I don't know if this is from my boots or what, but I am trying to figure out if I can fix it without buying anything. From what I can tell, it feels like the torsion spring inside of the shift lever tip has gone bad or something, but when I look at it, nothing looks damaged or bent. If I pull it down, it just flicks back out to the angle you see it. Sorry for what's probably a NOB question. It's a KTM 250xc. - Dirt2Bike
  14. My Lifan125 cc engine is brand new. I rode it around for a bit and noticed something weird. When I Shift into 3rd gear, it doesn’t shift. But when I shift into fourth it shifts ok. Also, when I downshift, the shifter gets stuck in the down position. It is also very hard to get into neutral and I get a false neutral trying to shift into 3rd. What could be the problem here?
