  1. Got a 2005 DR-Z400S with only 2500miles on it a couple of days ago. It's in really good condition appearance wise and runs fine for the most part, has supposedly been sitting barely used for a few years. Will run fine for several miles at a time, but will suddenly begin surging and stuttering, as if throttle is cutting out momentarily, then if I release the throttle the engine usually just dies and refuses to start up without dying again within a few seconds. If it's sitting idle at the time the problem occurs, I can hear the engine begin to drop revs and sound less consistent, then it usually dies after about 10 seconds even if I try to keep the revs high. While this is going on the throttle also feels less responsive. If I then just wait at the side of the road for about 5 minutes, it'll usually then start right up first time and I'll be on my way for another couple of miles until it happens again. The distance I've managed between compulsory stops has varied between about one mile and ten miles. It's happened when the bike's idle and when I've been doing 70mph on the motorway, which was great fun. Any thoughts on what the culprit could be? Thanks a lot
  2. I'm new to this form and have a couple of my bikes I have questions on. First bike is my 2003 KTM 450 SX. It runs great and I can run it down the road throttle and on trails no problem without it dying on me. But when I jump it, it spits, sputters and dies. So when I land I need to pop the clutch to get it started again. Any idea what this could be? second question is on my 2003 KTM 125 sx. When I'm riding it it tends to surge around 3/4 to full throttle. But when I let off it will kinda go back to normal. I've cleaned the carb, new air cleaner, fresh rebuild, just can't figure it out. any help would be appreciated. I am a marine mechanic so I usually can figure this kind of stuff out but I've been stuck on these two bikes for awhile. Thanks
  3. Hi Guys, New to the forum (I am one of the audio guys on a famous Harley forum - same forum name) I am at a loss at this point in time... I am pretty savvy from a mechanical perspective, did my research, etc etc. Need bike (2005 WR250F - Keihin CRF carb) running smooth for trip july 10th with bro. So the basics: - based in Las Vegas (~2500ft above sea level) - carb is CLEAN, spark plug at .6mm, clean new air filter - float set to 8-9 mm - starts up without an issue - got manual adjustable A/F needle - set to 2 -2.5 turns out (@ 2.5 seems to run a tad better) - jetting: Pilot #42, Main #175, leak jet #95! (high compared to stock according documentation) - Needle I cannot find a code on it - EDIT: needle clip in the middle on position 4. Symptoms: + stationary - starts and runs fine + upping throttle to 1/3 RPMs increase "smoothly" + full throttle: hits the RPM limiter so IMO no issue - Quick WOT > bogs (I believe that is what you call it) and dies (I can live with that, but not the next one) - I fiddled with the accelerator Pump timing at tad, keeping track of the original setting; did not seem to get rid of the WOT issue. - 1/3 - 3/4 throttle : it ?surges?... I mean RPMs go up and down in like 2-3 times per second (this is all not loaded so in the garage; When riding bike has the same behavior) when reading articles on the web and youtube's, it "points" to the main needle, right? or perhaps the leak jet is way too big...? I appreciate your help/comments/suggestions... If need be I can shoot a video...
  4. Help, watch video with sound on. RPMs surge at idle and when holding a constant speed. I bought the bike last year as a project. The guy told me he had leaned out the carb and couldn't get it quite right. So I installed a basic carb kit with stock jetting and the bike steal runs like this. Seams to have great power at full throttle, but starts this surging after it warms up. I've had the V-Force reed cage off, the reeds looked OK'ish? (I,m just not sure what symptom a weak reed would cause) and checked for leaks all through the intake tract. Could it be a leak in the case halves? A weak reed? Thanx for your time and help!
  5. Hi I Just bought a CRF250X 2004 and so far its been apart 500 times in the last week. When the bike is just cursing and low speeds and the throttle is only on a little bit, I get surging, it is pretty bad. I bought it with a 40 pilot jet and a 165 main. I tried a 45 main but ended up using a 42 and have gotten it running pretty good at about 3 turns out. I tried moving the needle down a pin but that didn't really change anything. As far as I know its because its not getting enough fuel (lean) But the bike runs fine at idle and takes off fine so I really have no idea. The last thing i am thinking of trying tomorrow is adjusting the float height to allow more fuel into the pilot jet. I would appreciate your help, thanks
