  2. Yes, I am asking what to buy, I’m sure there are a million other threads with a very similar question, but before bashing me for posting, please understand that although I am talking about the whole topic, I want to focus a large portion of this post on the expense of the two bikes, mostly the repair expense. Now that we’ve got that cleared up, I’m an intermediate rider, bought a brand new 2018 250XC last year and love the bike. I race hare scrambles, but lately I’ve been riding MX a lot and thinking about trying a new 4 stroke and getting something that will handle the track a bit better (suspension-wise). I’ve been told the 350’s are about as expensive as they get to repair when it comes to the engine, but I don’t truly know what the case is. Does anyone have some round-about numbers, any comparisons to the expense of the 450? Yes, I know the 450 costs a few hundred more up front, I don’t care about that, just looking at maintenance. Also, I’m worried that being used to the 250 2 stroke (and I ride with the red spring in, I like an aggressive feel) I will have a hard time getting used to a 350F, kind of like getting on a 250F where I feel like I’m pounding on the throttle to keep it moving. Is this anything to be worried about? In every other way I lean towards 350, being a 2 stroke guy, liking the lighter-weight, more nimble-feeling bikes.
  3. Hello all, I am planning on purchasing one of my grandpas old bikes from my grandma. the bike in question is a 1982 Honda ft500 with 1291 original miles (my grandpa bought it new) it is missing the carb and a few of the side shields and the air filter box cover. It also may be locked up or just in gear as the rear wheel doesn’t turn but I haven’t tried to shift it at all. No one in the family knows the last time it was ridden and the carb has been off the engine for at least 5 years, leaving the cylinder open. But the bike has been in indoor storage For at least the last 10 years and it does look pretty damn clean. I would like to give my grandma a fair price for it I was thinking somewhere in the 300-500 range as it sits as I see good running ones sell for a little more then 1000. Do you guys think that is a fair deal? Also I would like a kick start on the bike as after some research I hear the electric start gives problems and I was wondering can I just swap a 79-81 Honda xr500 motor into the ft500 frame? Or should I just use the right side crankcase cover and the kickstart parts from a 79-81 xr and leave the ft engine in the ft? Also has anyone personally added a kickstart to their ft? Thank you for your help
  4. Hello everyone, I'm trying to determine the exact model of my 1979 XT500 with frame and engine number 1E6-221168. Is it an XT500F? United States (not sure if that makes any difference). Any insight appreciated. Thanks, Mark
  5. So, I found an absolutely beautiful klx300 yesterday on craigslist for $2400. Has roughly 50 original miles. I got it from the original owner who spent the past several years building it. Has all stroker pars including carb, cam, full exhaust system and other little odds and ends. also has brand new factory connection suspension set up for my weight, baja lighting kit, and a street title! Wondering what are the must haves to make it a dual sport like tires etc. It has DOT knobbies but it will be a bit aggressive for the street. thanks
  6. Hey all, I am new to the forums and dirt in general. (street rider) I am looking at getting a TTR-225 this week. I know that this has a few threads already but I was unable to find links to products with an exact fit. I was wondering what the best suspension would be for this bike. I am new to upgrading suspension so would I just need stiffer fork springs, what exactly do I need to change? And what difference if any do RaceTech gold valves make? I won't be jumping the bike, I would just like to have something that has stiffer suspension than a stock TTR-225. I will be doing trail riding in Georgia, with mud crossing, mostly decently packed dirt/clay what would work best for my application? And who makes a good skid plate for the bike? Please provide links to all things mentioned. Thanks! Nick
  7. Here's my take on the Thumper Jockey Enduro 3000 Head Light Kit. I didn't find too many reviews of the product on Youtube, so I made my own. I just discovered this site (and love it) so let me know if I'm off the mark here.
  8. Don't stop me now [WhereIsWiljen - Join the 2 wheeled Madventure] Hi there thumpertalk followers, I wanted to share with you all my adventure I did last year. I bought a KLX 150 (2015 model) in Malaysia and rode it all the way overland to the Netherlands. It took me less than 10 months and I went through 25 countries, solely overland traveling. All in all, it was a Madventure 35.000km on a standard KLX 150 with some panniers for my luggage. I will post more in this topic soon, but above you see a short video with highlights from south east asia! As you can see it opens a playlist from my youtube channel, you can switch to the episodes as well. Cheers, WhereIsWiljen You can find my facebook channel by searching on WhereisWiljen.
  9. Hey guys, I am really needing some good advice here from anybody who has ever owned or rebuilt classic Yamaha 2 strokes (1989 - 1994). I live in South Africa, and bought a little farm thumper while on holiday this past weekend. It was advertised as a DT175 which is a bike that is easy to get parts for down here. It has been cosmetically customized and looks pretty darn cool... and lets face it, all the old classic Yamaha 2T engines look the same at a glance! So I genuinely thought it was a naked DT. The bike had no papers, and was used purely for the farmer to putt around on his farm. The only things needing attention was the stator cover which had snapped in half - this was visibly noticeable, and a little leak from a badly resealed gasket (both generally easy and cheap to fix here). The bike was still running and idling fine, started first kick, and I had a little ride around the farm before loading the bike up onto my pickup and heading off, thinking I could fix this thing up nicely in no time for next to nothing, and have what we call down in SA "a nuwe speelgoed" (A new plaything) for the weekends when I am not riding my beloved and reliable DRZ400SM. SO, I get home and decide to contact our local Yamaha branch, out of interest, to find out the history of the bike before I start fiddling (Don't ask me why I did not do this all before I bought the bike - It was a spur of the moment purchase, and was sold to me for dirt cheap!). I send off the VIN and engine number. Comes back, and this little freakin' turd turns out to be a 1989 TDR180!! WHAT. But now I am stuck as we do not really have TDR's down here - and I have never even seen one myself. Long story short - What alternative could I use as a stator cover? Do any other old Yamaha 2T model stator covers fit the TDR or share similar engine parts? Ordering from Ebay is so expensive thanks to my country being in junk status due to a junk president. So the shipping costs more than the actual item does, and our customs is a joke too. Yamaha has also advised me that this stator cover has been discontinued. I have put up local ads looking for parts, contacted FB 2T groups, and local shops. Nothing for TDR's has come back yet. Any advice or sharing of experience is welcome! 🙂
  10. Hi guys, I am new to this forum. Hopefully you guys can give me some insight or have experienced this yourselves. I have a 04 crf250x bike has been running awesome for some time now. I took her for a spin today and while I was riding noticed the clutch lever didn't feel like it had the same spring to it, almost like the clutch was hanging up. As I was riding I touched the adjustment sleeve up near the perch. It was hot, so much so it melted through my glove, I pulled over immediately and found that the cable was smoking behind my headlight/number plate and it eventually caught on fire! I turned the bike off, and it seemed to stop but I fired it back up to get it to my house. When I got to my house I shut the bike off. I pulled the front number plate off and found some of the insulation on the wires had been melted. Now the bike won't start, kick or button, with the button I don't even get a click. I checked the main fuse and it wasn't blown. The clutch pulls no problem aside from the fact it's insulation melted off as well. Before I start tearing it down is there anything I should start with that may be easy, it does have the original clutch, but I have been good about keeping up with the fluid. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys, Ken

I realised quickly that i bought with out going it through Thoroughly enough with the seller. Many wiring and engine solution could have been done better by a toddler. Very Well i Got The bike to run Smooth and good, Then all of a sudden every single piece of light on this non battery bike went Dark, i had led blinkers, stop light etc. Working like a charm, now its all gone, and The donkey who did The wiring left no fuses, what to do?
