  1. I went for a ride today with some friend and my bike shit on me. The bike ran just fine yesterday but today it had some trouble starting up. after warming it up for a little bit it stalled because my clutch cable is messed up. After it stalled the bike was really hard to start I had to bump start it. We went out for a little ride and came back after the bike stalled again and had to bump start it. We charged the battery and the bike would start with e start (still not easy). Then we went out for a longer ride stalled a few times had a lot of trouble starting and on the way back I started to hear a ticking noise from the head (I think), there might also be a ticking noise from the clutch too. It sounds like this guys bike. I think its the valves but I don't know why they would make that noise.
  2. I just put an fmf powerbomb on my 2006 yz250f and started it up a few times and have began to hear a slight tick in the top end. I also turned the bike over maybe 20 times without starting it to test for air leaks in the exhaust. Could this have caused too much back pressure and thrown off my valves? (the muffler plug WAS in). I know the normal 4 stroke engine noise, but this doesn't sound too normal. Could you guys take a listen and let me know? Hoping it's a normal sound. Any help appreciated! Video of sound:
  3. After a fresh replate by millennium technologies (they had access to this new piston for sizing), a new wiseco piston with proper exhaust bridge holes drilled, new wrist pin and bearing, and new power valves, my 2001 rm125 has a rattling sound coming from the engine. This bike is seriously testing me. It hasn’t given back what I’ve put into it in the slightest. Someone please help me diagnose this noise. I have a video of it running in this YouTube link: https://youtube.com/shorts/sBJHr1Bg7iQ?feature=share
  4. Bought an 05 KLR about 6 months ago put over a thousand miles on it since. Decided it was time to check the valves as part of regular maintenance considering I don’t know the last time they were adjusted. All valves were tight, pulled the cams and replaced the shims. Valves are now running at the loose end of spec. Exhaust valves can get a 0.25mm feeler gauge under with some friction, a 0.30mm won’t get in there at all. Same with the intake: can get a .20mm gauge under but a .25 won’t at all. Engine is timed correctly (I checked at least 5 separate times) and the cam chain tensioner was reset before bolting it back on. The bike had some ticking noises coming from the top end before doing this adjustment, however since doing this the ticking noises have become much louder. As with the quieter ticking the noise is there right from the start, when bike is in neutral, and does not get louder or or quieter with low to mid range RPMs or engine temperature. The only time it seems to disappear is at high RPMs or speeds where the exhaust drowns out the noise. No difference in power or the way the bike runs/ rides. Also worth noting I stripped the right intake valve cover thread (that’s a whole nother post in itself lol). I know KLRs are noisy machines but this seems to be a bit much. I don’t want to write it off as it being a typical KLR noise, I plan to get as much life out of this bike as possible so I’d like to know 1) is this a product of loose valves? 2) something else, or something to be concerned about? 3) has anybody else experienced this? 4) How the hell do I get rid of it? thanks in advance, KT
  5. Hi - New to thumpers and TT I picked up two XR400s last summer - a 99 that was in pretty decent shape, and a 2003 that was in slightly less good shape. My son and I rode all last summer with no problems, and most of this summer. But now the 03 has a pronounced ticking sound that seems to come from the top end. I am a noob when it comes to thumpers, and not really mechanically inclined, so could use some help. A couple of weeks ago, my son and I rode perhaps 600 or 700 miles (riding to Ouray, then a couple sections of the COBDR to Buena Vista) around 200 of which was on pavement. The bike was working hard to stay at 60mph-ish (bike in question has a 48 rear sprocket so rpms were high). I just checked the valves (following a youtube vid, and other than not being sure that I was at TDC on the right stroke, the process was easy) and the clearances were within spec. There is no decomp lever/cable, but the guide and mechanism is in place on the outside of the engine case. I didn't remove it and didn't know to ask about such. The shop I bought from (local KTM shop, the bike was owner's brother's) said the bike had been sitting for 10 years and that they had replaced the piston. I didn't ask for nor was offered details on that work. It started up and ran fine. Again, we rode all last summer and up til now, no issues other than a bit hard to start. This is my first kick start bike, and I don't know if it applies here, but sometimes I would get two or three kicks and then on the next kick the kickstart lever wouldn't move at all - like something was bound/stuck. Slowly pushing the lever down would get it past the strong resistance and then I could kick normally. I took an audio recording of both bikes on a cold start and uploaded it to youtube. The 99 sounds SO much quieter... Link to Youtube Anyone care to take a quick listen and give me some hints as to what to look at next? Thanks!
  6. Just did a cam rebuild strictly by the service manual and now there is an intermittent ticking coming from the cam cover area. Does anyone know what this is?
  7. Last time I had my valves adjusted I had a shop do them, so I will preface this by saying that I may have adjusted them incorrectly myself because I do not recall this noise, and the kickstart problem that has come with it, after the previous adjustment. However, after completing what I believed to be a successful valve adjustment (I used the crank lock method to ensure I was at TDC) I immediately noticed this very loud ticking noise coming from the front right side of the engine that was not there before. This noise is separate from the normal noisy clutch sound that will go away when the clutch is engaged. This noise itself however, seems to subside when I pull in the decompression lever. The throttle response on the bike felt good when I rode it, and the electric start works just fine. The only noticeable issue (which is what is making me decide not to ignore the noise) is that my kickstart now feels like a brick wall and harshly snaps back at me, whereas before it would kick over the bike fairly effortlessly in no more than two kicks hot or cold. I will post a video of the bike riding and of it running while in the garage. Any suggestions for how to fix this are appreciated. Thanks in advance to all! 8. Hi there, i got me a problem. my xr400, about a week ago i heard a slight ticking in the right hand side of the head, the sound kept getting louder as i rode the bike to and from work. i figured it was the valves. so when it got loud enough to hear without listening for it i went in and checked valves for the first time in my life. did a fair job. in spec now. but as i didnt know much as it was my first time, in all my wisdom i turned the flywheel clockwise trying to find tdc. (Which isnt where it should be, not on the T marker) i heard a clicking/snapping noise when i did this, ive read now that it could have been the manual decomp? but now the noise is so loud its almost drowning out the idle. i checked the cam chain tensioner. its fully extended itself. is this my problem? or did i break something?
  9. Hi, as the title suggests, my bike is making a ticking sound that appears to be coming from the head, it’s not a constant sound though as it comes and goes. ive recorder a video of the issue, which is especially noticeable at 40 seconds and 51 seconds into the video. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  10. Been struggling with this one for a while. 1972 Honda xl250 has a knocking sound and I can’t figure out what it is. Was told to check out the top end and check the rocker arms but they seem pretty solid. The bike only has 2,000 miles on it but it’s been problem after problem. runs good though. Lots of fun. I have a longer video if you want to hear it. fun bike though!
  11. Hey all, Ive been chasing a nasty tick noise on my 230f for the last month. I adjusted the valves and checked the timing chain, it sounds like its coming from the middle of the engine (just below the spark plug). Did the previous owner incorrectly install the gasket, and what I'm hearing is exhaust blowby? The engine casing doesnt seem to line up with the gasket at all. Thanks.
  12. Hi guys! I just registered in this forum, which looks like a great place to get some information on off-road bikes, as I recently bought an '01 XR650R. So hello to everyone (from Europe, please have understandig for my incorrect english if so, but don't limit yourself in language, I'm way better in listening/reading than writing :P)! Unfortunately, the first topic I'm turning towards you with is an issue I got with my XR650R I recently bought in used condition. It has two problems, which may be related to each other and which I absolutely did not notice during purchase negotiation - either the seller was lucky that the issues didn't turn up that time or I was too excited to notice, latter is absolutely possible - having a shamefaced look at my history in motor vehicle purchasings. ? ? So issue no. 1 is: The engine will start, but it needs a few vigorous kicks regularly. Also the idle is not really stable, it may stall when not giving a little bit of throttle here and then. My guess is this problem to be only an issue with carb adjustment - but I'm willing to admit I'm wrong, if so. The BRP is uncorked and has a Mikuni TM40 and an Akrapovic installed, according to the seller it was adjusted (saw the bills verifying that statement). Only fact worth mentioning here is that 7000 miles have passed since this carb adjustment. The bike ran around 19k miles in total. Issue no. 2: The bike makes a significant ticking/clicking RPM-related noise obviously coming from top end. A friend of mine said the cause clearly must be the valve clearance. I adjusted it to 0.15mm in and 0.20mm ex according to the workshop manual. Intake was already in spec, exhaust was around 0.25mm, so too much. (Does it normally click when using the spec measurements??) I also noticed that manual decomp was a little bit overtightened, which may have been like that for longer unfortunately. I fixed that as well. (Fun fact: I haven't noticed it beforehand since the compression was too high to push over the TDC without using the handle. After readjusting only the exhaust valves I had no problem to kick over the TDC without pulling the lever - until I fixed the overtightened decomp. Can't really explain that to me.) So now I've run out of ideas where the ticking can still come from. Is engine ticking acceptable for the XR650R when it's cold? I haven't had the chance to take a thorough test ride since I've bought it. This because I first have to get the issues fixed and then register the bike (living in a large town with no "fun space" available for activities like unregistered test driving. :P). Thank you guys in advance, hopefully some experienced BRP riders or other guys which encountered the same issue will stumble upon this thread! ? Kind regards, Graylack.
