  1. hello, my first post here! I have been directed here by google searches a few times, great place with plenty of knowledge. anyway I have a problem. I bought a Yamaha wr426r a little over a week ago. my first bike with a clutch so it took me a few days to learn how to make it move and stop etc. I was driving it down the road full speed and suddenly something gave way and it sounded terrible, the back wheel locked and I skidded for a while until I stopped. when I got to a stop smoke was coming from the exhaust like the engine was on fire inside. thankfully I stayed on, everything else is secondary. I got a courier to bring me home, since this the bikes kickstand has been stuck in the same position. does anybody have any idea what could have happened to the engine?
  2. hello everyone, I am really new to these bikes. I finally got the money to buy one and it has been a nightmare for me. I bought a wr426cc then a valve dropped and needed a rebuild, I had it sent to a garage that have a terrible reputation (only found this out after I took it there). they upped the cost time and time again and it took them around 10 weeks to get my bike sent back to me. when they did send it back they changed the top end and cylinder to 450cc and bolted it to the original 426cc bottom end (the bolts don't even line up). the bike is road registered and my insurance is now void because the bike has a different engine fitted. it was leaking oil from where the two halves of the bottom end meet, it was also revving itself when the throttle was let go and exhaust going red hot shortly after starting it up. the shop asked me to send it back and they apparently fixed the oil leak and jetted the carb free of charge, when they sent it back to me it was leaking petrol from the carb onto the bottom end to where the oil leak was so I cant tell if it is leaking oil and petrol now. they left electrical cables dangling on the exhaust which of course start to melt when the bike is started. there is black sealant hanging out of the engine. they also bent the choke plunger to make it fit, it doesn't work now because of that. my bike was 100% original when sent up to them. this has been an expensive experience for me and I am hoping to take these people to court. I am looking for people who have mechanical knowledge of these bikes to give their opinions on the work they have done, it will help me when I take them to the small claims court.
  3. Hi guys, I have a 2000 wr400 supermoto. I was wondering if anyone has herd of an oil pick up mod. I had a buddy that blew up his wr250 because he was stunting and doing wheelies, apparently oil wasn't reaching the oil pump with the front wheel up. Anyone know if this is an issue for the w400 and how to fix it.
  4. Hi All, This is first time I have ever used a forum, thought I would give it a try to see if anyone else has come across this. I know it's becoming quite an old bike now the 426 range, but I never had the opportunity to own one until now. I had some issues starting it (as everyone who doesn't weigh more than 14 stone) so I brought a Hotcam from the USA. Fitted it no probs, until it came to running it up. Now it will not throttle up. I'm tempted to throw the old cam back in it to see what it does. It's great at starting now throttle it a couple of time and then kick, but open the throttle slowly or fast and it wont rev past about 3000 rpm (estimated). I'm a BMW bike mechanic, So I'm pretty clued up on this. I have checked the valve timing twice, and the carb just incase it is because I left it for 6 months, valve clearances are all spot on and re-shimmed but still feels odd, like the ignition trimming is retarded. Throttle it and it makes that horrible induction roar could also be lean mixture or air leak. Obviously I have checked all of these, except putting the old can back in it (which is probably a good option) But I just don't want to. I like being 9 stone and able to kick a 426! Any help would be amazing please guys! Thanks in advance
  5. Hey, I need help with starting my bike when warm (2001 WR 426). It starts on second kick when cold (cold choke on), and it starts first kick when hot (hot choke on). But when the engine is just warm, it can be a beast. It never left me stranded in the woods (unless I did something stupid), until this weekend. Stopped for water with a buddy and we started talking and pretty soon twenty minutes had gone by. Tried to restart the bike and it was no go. This went on for about an hour and I never did get it started - had to call the sag wagon. I did get it started the next day however. Any ideas? Is it flooding out when warm? I'd like to be able to take a break and know that I'm not going to be stranded out there. She's been a great old girl and I hate to trade her, but I hate being stuck in the woods. I sometimes have to ride alone these days, and that would have sucked in this case. Gadabout
  6. I've read an article on TT about this already, but that was posted in 2006. I want to know that if I buy a 2001 WR426, can I make it street legal? If so, what do I need to buy, what forms do I need to fill out, what is required?
  7. Was just wondering if there is any difference between a 2000 Wr400f and a 2001. Because I have a 2001 Wr400f and I know that’s the year they brought out the 426 aswell so wasn’t sure if the 2001 Wr400f had any changes or was just kept the same.
  8. I have ride some very tight trail for 2 days, bike gets very hot. When i fall or stall it, it's hard to start,, even usiong hot start plunger. If it's left to sit for bit, starts right up. Any trick with fuel or what ever to make it start better when this hot ?
  9. Snow season in Michigan so it's time for some maintenance. This past year I put off the top end rebuild and sure enough had a loss in power and what I assume was a head gasket leak that shut me down before the snow started to fly. I did most of the work on my 2 strokes but this is my first 4 stroke so I was hoping for some advice on what to do to keep it running. Please keep in mind that it is going on 17 years old and I only paid $600 for it so I'm really not trying to break the bank. I'm not trying to be cheap but it doesn't seem worth dumping a ton of money into it so I'm really looking for a list of "must do" work to keep it running. I stripped it down to the piston last night. Don't know what worn valves look like or how to check them. I'll get the cylinder bore checked anyways but reasonably thinking is it safe to do a quick hone and new stock piston? I'll post a few pics as I get them.
  10. Hey Folks, Iv'e followed this forum for a while just for advice purposes and had great luck from all the information iv'e found so far. Unfortunately I have got myself a problem that I cant seem to find any insight into and its probably just my ignorance to dirtbikes and my bike in general but, hopfully some of you can shed some light onto my lowly knowledge. Right to it then- I just got myself a WR426. While looking it up ive found they are a pain in the arse to start. I spent hours just researching all the different "techniques" people use to start the bikes. I have found that the kicking down to TDC then pulling decomp and kicking through it about 1 inch rouchly, letting go of the decomp, raise the kick to the very top and haull ass through. Unfortunately out here in Nb, Canada, our weathers beenr anging from -10 to -30 so, the bike isnt starting right now (its a monster to start in good weather i hear so i wasnt hopeful of anything). NOW. I went away for a month and have had the bike parked in a unheated garage. I got home last night and figured id go outside and check the bike out and see if i could MAYBE get it going. I jumped on and went to do the drill. The kick wont move. Pulled decomp and tried to push through. Nothing. I noticed the rad fluid was frozen (before i left I unscrewed the cap to let any freezing that may have happened have somewhere to go and the cap is now stuck. That aside I didnt know if these bikes have anything that could freeze in them etc that could be causing this issue. The motor is brand new with about 10 hours on it. Is this just a case of, let the bike sit till its warm and see what its like in the summer months or should i take another course of action. Any help is much appreciated, and if anyon has any suggestions for how the bike should be started let me know! Thanks folks.
