  1. ok, first thread, so if i mess up or do something wrong, im also 15 so remember any advice helps, Ive been riding dirt bikes since i was 3, before i even could ride a scooter, and ive always loved riding (sometimes a little too much) but that had always been dirt limited, until the beginning of this year i traded my (moped, which was actually incredibly illegal) as it went close to 70 with all the mods i put on it, for a 79 xl250, it ran, sort of, the guy sprayed gas in the cylinder and showed me it run, and i believed him. When i had gotten it home, the problems began adding up, it wasnt getting spark, the spokes on the front were all really loose, and someone really ****** up the paint job on the tank ( over the original honda stickers i might add) but this wasnt too bad, i saved up worked around my neighborhood and with my money, i got a supertrapp megaphone exhaust pipe ( someone butchered the old one completely) a new carb and airbox (someone took the airbox off and put metal mesh on, not even pods, just a piece of steel mesh over the tube) and a new cdi. This is when i started to realize i had gotten ripped off, first of all, it wasnt even a 250 engine, nor the right year, and there are no id numbers on the engine i can find to determine what year or size it is, so at this point i had blown all my money on parts for a bike that had the wrong engine. I immediately raced to ebay looking for a motor, no such luck, cheapest motor is 350 and its in terrible shape, i look on craigslist, nothing, i look on craigslist again a few hours later, and BOOM 79 xl250 runs & rides no title 300 dollars, perfect dent and scratch free original tank, oem seat, and every light they came with, and only 300 miles on it, im guessing it was kept in a barn, so i talk to the guy and i ask if i payed him 50$ if he would deliver it, and if he had paypal. he doesnt respond, i text him again after school that day "sorry i dont deliver, i sold it a few hours ago" instantly im even more frustrated, as this was exactly what i needed, but i have found another thing now, my neighbor has a 83 xl500 motor that runs and was fully rebuilt, hasnt even been put in a bike since he blew a head gasket on it, i was wondering how hard it would be to put this motor into the xl, i have very little fabricating experience, but my neighbor is a mechanic, he kinda laughed about it when i mentioned it to him, so im wondering, would it really be that difficult, thanks - Landon
  2. I've been looking around for a reasonably priced cylinder head for my 1982 XL500R. I found one from a 1982 XL500. Can someone tell me if that will fit? They look identical but I've looked all over and can't find anything definite about whether or not it will fit. Many thanks.
  3. Trying to figure out if electrical is working/needs replaced. Generator tested 263 ohms, pulse tested at 99 ohms. Ignition coil primary tested at 1.7 ohms and the secondary at ~60 ohms w/ the spark plug cap. CDI seems to be the issue, but the results almost seem too bad to be true. The only resistance I found was the Green to Black/Red at 147.77x200k ohms, Black/Red to Black/White Kill at 152.2x200k ohms, and Blue/Yellow to Green at 150.1x200k ohms . The OEM manual does say that a specific tester is needed, but that seems like a farce. Any idea what might be going on? CDI's are a little pricey and I would like to not replace unless needed.
  4. I recently acquired one of those fat shop binders for this model series. It's been somewhat difficult for me to track down much info about this bike over the two years I've owned it, but this will help me a lot in restoring my basket case. Hope it helps you. The links below will download .pdfs directly from my cloud storage. XL500S XL500R 79-82 (62.6MB) (link) XR500A 81-82 (40MB) (link) XL500R 83-84 (45.5MB) (link) P.S. Probably the best upgrade you can perform is a front end swap for a CR500 of the same era (try 85?), which has the same size tapered needle bearings. It's literally plug-and-play for a front disc and beefier forks.
  5. Hi guys, new here, I have a 1981 Honda xl500 and it's fantastic. While I was riding yesterday, as I shifted into 3rd or 4th from 2nd, my bike didn’t want to stay in gear and would revert to neutral. When I squeezed the clutch to shift back down, my bike died. This all happened once and I assumed I ran out of gas, but started my bike again and kept riding, where it all happened again a block later. I think, “Bike is probably out of gas, no problem, I’ll go grab some gas and keep going.” This is where it gets weird. I start filling my tank and almost instantly notice gas leaking out of the engine. I stop pouring and look – it is coming out of the carb. It looks like it could be a designated overflow drain but since I had only put about 1-2L of fuel in the tank, I do not know why it would be overflowing. I turned my gas shutoff to the off position and it stopped. When I turned it back on again, the gas was draining out of the overflow drain as well as another overflow drain on the other side of the carb! I didn’t want to keep filling gas in the tank just to watch it keep leaking, so I stopped filling the tank and gave up for the night. What should I do? Thanks in advance for any advice given!
  6. Gday Just replaced clutch pressure plate, frictions plate, springs and bearing and for the first minute the bike ran and went through all the gears. Next minute the shifter still goes up but there is no clicks and is stuck in either nuetral or first? Whats the go here?
  7. Hi all, This is my first post on here so hopefully I don't mess it up. Also hope I don't piss of any "purest" people out there as this is in no way a restoration and I have no interest in restoring it to original. This is what I have been working on the last few weeks. I picked up an xr500 about a month ago for $300, it started but had no clutch lever so I didn't get a chance to ride it. I noticed later that it has a White Brothers aluminum swing arm and possibly upgraded shocks but I really don't know. Its pretty rough but a running bike for $300 I wasn't going to complain. I decided i wanted to build it into something that was kind of a cross between a bobber and a scrambler and use it mainly for commuting across town to work, but still be able to tackle mild single track. I went though my garage and was able to come up with a front fender off of a newer honda 150r (i liked how small it was), and a rear fender off of an 04 crf250x so it has the licence plate holder an led brake lights. the front fender bolted directly on but he back took some modifying. From ebay I found a 21" wheel for the front (81-83 xr500) but the drum was a 131mm max dia while the original 23" was a 141mm max dia. this was quite a disappointment but I guess i should have done a little more research. I ended up putting the brake hub from a 83xl250r into it, its not perfect but it works for now. I then started to build a seat, while the original was quite comfy, it did not have the look I was after. I started with cardboard until I had a shape I liked. Then I cut, bent and welded it all together, luckily at work I have access to a nice break, shear, welders and scrap metal. It turned out ok I thought for my first attempt at a seat pan. Next I put some closed cell foam on it from a sleeping pad I got from the sporting goods store. I wanted a low profile for the look so the thickest part is only about an inch thick. I used a steak knife to trim the foam and it worked alright, I ended up covering all the edges with gorilla tape to smooth it out. I then covered it with marine vinyl I found at Jo Ann fabric. Instead of cutting and sewing to get the material to fit right I used a heat gun which stretched the material enough for a "good" fit. I used 3m spray glue and a metal plate on the bottom to secure the cover, its holding so far. Here it is with the seat all finished. I also found some horrendously cheap foot pegs for a yz bike from (99-05), I think they are a cast steel of some sort. I guess you cant complain much for $15. they required a little grinding to fit but seem to work good enough. I was finally able to take it out this last weekend and had a blast, it runs way better than a $300 bike should. I had to remember how to engine break as I usually ride a 2t with good brakes, it turns out they went away from drums for a reason. My seat wasn't quite as bad as I thought it would be out on the single and double track. We also went out to some hill climbs and the 500 impressed me with amount of torque it delivered at any rpm. This bike is much different than anything I've ridden before between its torque and having almost no weight over the back tire. As far as the seating position goes, I actually like how compact it feels. I also think the low profile seat goes with lines of the bike rather well so I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, especially for being my first try at making one. Next for this build I would like to make it street legal. I'm not looking forward to figuring out whats going on with the wiring and converting from 6v to 12 as the components I have are 12v and i would like to have the front light be a LED light bar. I have a different bike that I am thinking about adding lighting to using a rechargeable battery like a Milwaukee m12 or something, so maybe I will go that route. I would also like to figure out an exhaust for this at some point so i don't get kicked out of my neighborhood. Thanks for reading, I'd love to hear what you think and any suggestions you may have.
  8. Hello friends. My coworkers and I are planning a vintage bike group ride from AZ to NM for next month. We've all been buying old bikes, and yesterday I landed the sweetest bike of the whole bunch! Last night I went down to Scottsdale and bought this gorgeous 1980 Honda XL500S from this neat old guy who's an engineer for the Department of Defense. He bought this bike in 1981, and rode it occasionally over the years - just 6300 miles on the odometer. He parked it in his garage in 2010 and hasn't moved it since. He posted it for sale for $850. I was the first to contact him, and when I told him about our group ride, he got excited and said he'd hold it for me. I picked it up last night, and paid him $900 cash. He had the title already notarized and signed for me. This morning I drained the old fuel, put in new fuel, and it started. Now it starts on the first kick. Everybody has taken it for a spin this morning and I'm now the envy of the group. It runs down the road beautifully and quietly. This bike is so cool...I envy myself! Looking forward to many new adventures on this old girl. One pic is of it now parked in the shop with the other guys' bikes. Another is how it was pictured in the classified ad when I found it. The last is a commercial of the same bike from 1979. I'm super happy, just thought I'd share.
