  1. New here. I'm in Australia and have a 1980 XT250, only 4300km on the clock, just been tidying it up and plan to get it back on the road. It starts ok and runs well I put a new carby kit in and gave it a good clean out. The problem that I'm having is the idle rpm keeps changing. I'll get it idling at about 1000rpm, go for a lap around the paddock and it might be idling at 1500rpm. One time it even went up to 2100rpm just sitting there. Sometimes it slowly comes back to where I set it or slower It's just about different every time. I pulled the carby apart again today to double check the slide and the linkages that work the slide. Every thing is working freely with no slop in the linkages. It's still doing the same. While it was running I've checked that the throttle shaft had fully returned and it has, there's a pretty hefty return spring on it. I was wondering if the float may be not as floaty as it was in 1980 and is upsetting things. I seem to remember fiddling with the idle adjuster before so I'm pretty sure it's not something new. Any suggestions or opinions would be appreciated.
  2. So back in the day, early 90's/late 80's, I bought an XT250 fom a guy at a flea market for a couple hundred bucks if I remember right. I used to ride it around on my property when I lived in Ohio. I had 5 acres and would take my kids for rides and putt around. Well, I sold the place and the bike ended up in my shed for the last 17 years. I wanted to try and get it fired up so my sons can ride with me but it seems they all the riding places these days want your bike registered and well, I have nothing for the bike. Does anyone know where to start? I tried looking up the VIN and that don't even work because it does not have 17 numbers. Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

    Key Copy

I have one key for a 1981 XT250. Anyone know where I can get a copy or a blank? Went to a locksmith and he did not have one that fit.

  5. Hey guys, I cant get the carb throttle return spring to function correctly. When you push down it doesn't spring back to position. Is a part not correctly positioned?? Cheers!
  6. Hey guys, I was trying to adjust the idle speed screw on my '83 xt250 as she was idling at ~3000 when warm (the stock setting is 1200), and I went too far with it. Now she wont start and Ive tried going back and forth with the screw to no success. Does anyone know how to reset this screw to the stock setting? Thanks in advance!
  7. I'm in the market for a short beginners bike for my girl. The aftermarket sucks around these parts, so I'm thinking about buying new. The xt250 seems like the right fit. Does anyone know of any common issues or reasons why I shouldn't go with the xt250? My biggest concern is that it gets to be around 105F out here. I wanted to make sure that the bike wouldn't overheat under normal traffic conditions.
  8. Hey TT, first post here so thought I'd intro myself as well. Been a long time lurker, but moving through a project 83 xt250 sohc, I realised I would definitely need to be asking for some advice. So here goes. I think I've got a short. Ha - yeah I know, could be anything. I've unplugged all the lights, controls, tacho & speedo and whilst the fuse (15amp) doesn't blow immediately, it does start to heat up fairly quickly with what appears to be a short somewhere in the main harness. Before I start stripping it to see if there is any exposed wires etc, I thought I'd see if any one had any experience with any obvious or common areas to look or check. Appreciate that electrical issues can be a bit of a black hole but thought I'd check to see if anyone else had experienced something similar before I start really tearing into it.
  9. Hi guys, I've got some electrical gremlins plaguing my existence with my 1983 xt250. I've pulled apart the wiring and I've noticed the wiring diagram in my Clymer manual is wrong A LOT. I even started remaking my own color one but its proving very difficult. Does anyone have the diagram from an original yamaha manual or something that is more accurate?? The model I'm working on is the xt250K. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Josh
  10. Hello, I'm looking for a service manual to fix some issues on my 1983 XT 250 but i can't find it anywhere. If anyone has a link or agree to share, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.
  11. All, I just bought a 1982 XT250 project bike. We had one of these in the family in the 90s, so I know the model fairly well already. I guess my plan is just to have a small, simple bike for shorter local trips, and maybe some light trail touring. I do know it has some known weaknesses, i.e. suspension, brakes, 6V electrics, corroding mufflers, and open frame/exposed engine cases. So I am looking for tips regarding big bore/ higher comp pistons, camshaft (Web Cam) stiffer shock, fork springs, 12 V upgrade, and so on. I was also thinking about fabricating a stepped SS headpipe, and use a 1 1/2" inlet Supertrapp IDS2 muffler. I guess the weight saving will be replacing heavy stock parts with lighter parts in alloy etc (Sprocket, handlebar, rear fender reinforcement for tail light etc), and using smaller/ lighter tail light, indicator lights. And also replacing the stock instruments with a digital dash from KOSO, Trailtech etc. Any and all tips are welcome!
  12. Yamaha just announced their 2019 XT250 and TW200 dual sports 2019 Yamaha XT250 ETA of June with an MSRP of 5,199. Average MPG estimate of 76! 2019 Yamaha TW200 ETA of August w/ an MSRP of 4,599. Estimated MPG of 78! Both models are largely unchanged, but with an all new sandy beige color scheme. What do you guys thing? I've always loved the TW200. Not a lot of power, but always fun to just screw around on.
  13. Hi there I bought a tank for a project from a guy and it was so expensive I told him *mate I should get a bike along with that tank'.. to which he said 'ok dude'! Anyway.. I got an XT 250 from 1983, in fact 3 of them.. 1 could roll and 2 more in boxes with lots of spares. 3 engines. I noticed the same story with all 3 engines. Oil deprivation. Heads damaged, cams blue and with flat spots. Anyway I have disassembled all 3 engines.. the plastic cog on the oil pump is shorn off on 1, seized on another and fine on a third. I have read a lot about the oil issue on XT 250s but I can't seem to find out WHY. Can anyone enlighten me? I can see the parts that are recommended to be changed from Yamaha technical service, but it doesn't say why. Can it be the oil lines are a fraction too narrow for oil to reach the head? Was it oil 35 years ago that was not as good as today? I have had the head surface planed, new valves, springs and have ground new valve seatings, camshaft ground and heat treated (race cam), head water polished, will put a new crank and bearings in but need to get to the bottom of the oil issue. If anyone can help or has had experience, it would be excellent!! Cheers Paul
  14. First of all I'm new to this forum so hello to everyone, I am in the final stages of a restoration of my old 1983 XT250. The bike only has 7000km on it but had been sitting neglected for a while because it had no compression and the previous owner couldn't figure out the problem. I determined that the cam chain had skipped a couple teeth and thus the timing was way out of whack. I fixed that (as well as new rings, honed cylinder etc) and the bike now runs and drives fairly well (I still am working out some carb issues). Anyway, long story short, I went to do an oil change after running it for a little bit and when I took out the oil drain plug zero oil came out. I removed the other drain from the right side of the engine that has the metal filter and all the oil drained out of there. I figured maybe the drain was plugged but now I'm worried that maybe no oil is getting to that side of the engine which is the side with the cam chain and maybe that's what caused the issues in the first place. Has anyone had a similar issue? I guess ill take off the flywheel and alternator and see if there is any oil in there and if the drain is just plugged. Not looking forward to doing all that again but such is life. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Travis
  15. The bike ran great the first few days i had it. Took it on some ORV trails and ended up getting it stuck in about a foot of mud and when i hopped off the bike i lost my footing and it leaned into the mud on its right side. After pulling it out of the mud it still shifted fine but when i would give the bike throttle it didn't seem to move much and took way longer to get up to speed, even if i was revving it hard. When i shut the bike off and started it back up i could no longer get the bike to move. Sometimes i can get it to shift into first but if i let out the clutch i feel it move the tiniest bit but then nothing happens. So the bike is in first with clutch out and giving throttle does nothing. It shifts back into neutral fine. When the bike is off it sounds like it is able to shift fine and feels like its shifting. But when the bike is running shifting into first only works 1/10 tries. Last night i managed the shift it into first and when i let out the clutch the bike was pulling itself forward at like 1 mph but still, throttle does nothing. Was not expecting to have a problem like this with a 2018 bike with only 400 miles on it. My current plan is to take the right side cover off and look at the shift arm and drum. I'm not sure what else to do. Any feedback is massively appreciated.
  16. I made a video of my Yamaha XT250 mods on my youtube channel. I've also added some short ride videos. https://youtu.be/SMKE-lUdqkg
  17. Has anyone tried stripping down /modifying a newer Yamaha XT250 for strictly off-road riding? Why do that? I have one for dual sport. Plusses are low seat height, fuel injection, reliability, low cost. Have taken it everywhere off-road including gnarly single track. Thinking of buying a 2nd one for dual sport use, and modifying the current one for strictly off-road riding, stripping off headlight, tail light, passenger pegs - anything I can to reduce the weight. Just wondering if anyone's done that or seen it done.

  19. Hey guys, I just become the proud new owner of a '83 Yamaha xt250 and I'm after a good manual. I'm a fairly novice mechanic so I'm looking for a comprehensive guide. What does everyone use? I've found these two online.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Clymer-Workshop-Manual-Yamaha-XT125-XT200-XT250-1980-1984-Service-Repair/401575275736?hash=item5d7fc06cd8%3Ag%3A2s4AAOSwSUdbYPGy&_sacat=0&_nkw=YAMAHA+Workshop+Manual+XT250&_from=R40&rt=nc&_trksid=m570.l1313 https://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-Workshop-Manual-XT250-for-1980-1981-1982-1983-1984-Service-Repair/362162014750?hash=item545289ca1e%3Ag%3AJmsAAOSwImRYKWJW&_sacat=0&_nkw=YAMAHA+Workshop+Manual+XT250&_from=R40&rt=nc&_trksid=m570.l1313 Cheers!
