  1. Hello, As you can see, I'm very new here. Been reading posts for years, and I hope to contribute something to this forum soon. I have a 2002 yz426f converted to full supermoto. It runs beautifully; and boy does she rip! My mechanically illiterate buddy just bought a bone stock 2000 yz426 and it barely runs. After 20+ kicks, it will sputter and eventually idle roughly once it warms up a bit. It usually dies at the slightest hint of throttle, but will occasionally rev up after lots of horrific bogging noises. Sounds like a clogged carb right? I ordered the rebuild kit and successfully installed it (not my first carb rodeo by a long shot). Installed ALL new jets and polished every bit of varnish off with a soft scotch brite pad. The carb had some light varnish stains, but no large deposits. The symptoms persist and seem largely unchanged. Air filter is clean. Valves are in spec. Gas tank was thoroughly cleaned prior to reinstallation. Spark plug is brand new, and has sort of a light milk chocolate color (my ear says massive fuel starvation but this contradicts that). Carb accelerator pump is not clogged. Will post jet sizes and pics of anything requested. My thoughts: Carb slide plate in backwards? - I couldn't figure out how to get the throttle slide out of the carb to check this. Do I need to remove the whole throttle lever shaft and return spring? TPS problem? Could something in the potentiometer have deteriorated in the last 17 years? This could cause a jerky or nonexistent variation in the ignition timing...? I'm stumped. Thanks in advance.

So I got a 02 yz426 bike runs great hasn’t failed me take note I’m still a rookie I got this bike by default I didn’t choose it so you can imagine it’s a bit to much for me I just got offered a 04 rm250 https://offerup.co/UZ2J6jDkx6 He’ll even throw in this one https://offerup.co/Rt3TUEGkx6 for a straight trade I just gotta drive 1 hour 45 minutes no biggie just want people’s opinion
  3. So I purchased a yz426f cylinder with missing chunk after my yz450f cylinder experiment. Reasoning was that it worked fine with wider and taller chunks on 2 sides. After purchasing I realized it was perpendicular to the yz450f cutouts(oblivious for installing wristpin) but after inspection and install I verified the bottom oil ring didn't come down that far. But on my ongoing spare parts and need part(head) searches I've seen another cylinder missing same chunk. Now my original theory that perhaps it was dropped or ignorantly crushed in a vice or similar tool seems incorrect. Tried searching this forum and Google but only get chunk missing from everything but the cylinder or it pertains to 2 stroke which have ports that affect timing. So I figured I throw a hail Mary and see if everyone's vast knowledge on motorcycles/small engines I will find my answer.
  4. about 5 months ago i got my first bike which was a 2008 kx450, i got it home that day and long story short it put me in my ass, i ended up selling it and got a 2006 crf150f to learn how to use a clutch and just learn how to ride a dirtbike in general, after feeling like i needed an upgrade i sold it and got a 2007 ktm 85sx 2 stroke bored to a 105. same thing with the crf i got good with it and started looking for an upgrade, so that brings me to the bike i have now, a 2001 yz426. ive had it for a couple weeks just fixing it up making it look and run good. i have personally never rode it but i let my dad because he’s more experienced than me with bikes, so today i decided that i wanted to try and make up for the time my first 450 put me on my ass ( i whiskey throttled and didnt even go 20ft unless thats how far the bike threw me), so i went out and cranked it up but i couldnt seem to make myself even put it in first. i dont even think i pulled the clutch in, i froze up. i feel like im just overthinking it, anyone with any advice to make sure i dont make the same mistakes as last time? im 18y/o around 6 foot and 200 lbs , ive attached pictures of all the bikes ive owned
  5. I'm new to thumper talk and hope I can get some help here. I had my clutch cable break at the handlebar end while riding. I ordered a replacement and installed it as the repair manual says. I can't get the clutch to disengage. So I disconnected the cable at the engine end. With the bike on a stand and with the engine off I put it in first gear and no matter where I move the clutch lever at the engine the clutch won't disengage. I checked it by turning the rear tire by hand. I've noticed that the spring on the shaft of the lever has popped off but the pictures in the book don't show enough detail to see exactly where it should be hooked. It almost seems like it needs to be hooked and go a full revolution before the other end is hooked, to get any tension on it, but wont go that far. But that's a small issue. What could've gone wrong in my clutch to cause this? It seems odd to happen just cause my cable broke. The bike was towed a mile or so out of the woods in neutral after it broke. Even at that time I found it strange that I couldn't get it into first and ease out the clutch with the lever but I'm pretty sure the spring was popped off the lever at the time. Any help is appreciated since I'm supposed to take the family riding this coming weekend. Thanks!
  6. Hello, I have recently bought a 1998 wr400 with 2002 yz426 top end and keihin FCR 39 carb. I have an odd issue with idle, not sure if it is carb or what, i have checked and shimmed the lifters to no avail. It will idle either way too high or way too low. If I give it gas, it will idle as high as 3-4 grand like this untill I slow the motor down using the clutch or kill switch, then it will idle so low it wants to die. if I let it die, it is an ass to start afterward. gotta give it a super fast kick and hit the gas hard to get it going again. As you can imagine this makes it very difficult to ride in trails as it doesn't engine break at all, just pulls. Other than this, It runs great, quick on a hit of throttle and lots of power. The carb looks clean inside upon me taking it apart, doesn't appear to be anything stuck that I can see. I'm stumped on this. One other thing is it backfires pretty good when trying to start cold. I've always been pretty fond of the two smokers and don't have a tonne of experience with 4 strokes but I have been into a couple of motors. I know there's already an article on hanging idle but I think there's more to this than hanging, it will very seldom come down by itself whatsoever. Next plan of attack for me will probably be just replacing the pilot jet, its a 45, probably put in another 45.
  7. Hello friends, My buddy recently invited me on a ride, and I brought my GoPro along. He has lots of dirt bikes, and we took the YZ426 and the Husaberg FE450 on this particular trail ride. It was a lot of fun and we were both impressed with the Husaberg in all regards. We did several "races" (more drag style) during the ride, and the results were the same every time, even if we swapped riders: the YZ pulls ahead of the FE450 through the gears, but the FE450 tops out faster in 5th gear than the YZ, and still has 6th gear left over. But they are very close...the FE is just so sweet in every possible way.
  8. New to this forum, but have read many times and has been extremely helpful. I have an 02 426, rebuilt the carb myself, but did not split the middle, only top and bottom of carb. put some gas in the spark plug hole, new spark plug, confirmed it was sparking, put the spark plug in and tried to start it, thinking I would have at least a brief roar...nothing. I hooked up the tank, tried again to start it...nothing!.. Shouldn't I get at least a small roar with gas in the cylinder and a spark? I am not a mechanic to say the least, but maybe I'm totally wrong about this. help?

  10. Hey guys. I'm new here. I recently bought an 01 yz426f. I'm loving the bike so far. I'm having some tranny problems that I believe are the usual worn shift dog issue. I haven't gotten into the tranny yet to verify. It seems to slip and jump in 4th gear. Then during my first ride after an oil change it seemed 1st gear was doing the same. It started about an hour into the ride. There is a 450 engine nearby for 300 bucks I was thinking about picking up so I can redo that tranny then swap top ends to minimize down time. Is this swap possible? Will it be more monkeying around than it is worth? Thanks for any input.

I know that's a pretty good deal. What I'm wondering is how long the motor will last me. All I'll be doing is trail riding and riding around on a farm. I have an rm125 which I love. I was looking around for an 06+ yz250, but I found this deal and I've always heard good things about the 426's. He said he recently did the valves and it has been a good reliable bike for him. So would this be a good bike for me? I just don't wanna get a 4 stroke and have to dump a ton of money into it. My 2 stroke has been bullet proof. Any help would be appreciated

So I have a YZ426 with a 400 F head everything fit up good cams are in whole bike hole engines together kicks over only problem is it doesn’t have the pause in the kick to make me use the decompression I could kick it as if it has hot cams but it doesn’t so need help on that the only bike turns over tho very hard compression to kick but just doesn’t get stuck like it supposed to
  14. Hello so recently I got into dirt biking and asked a friend to join me who’s older brothers used to ride. His brother had a 426 so my friend is going to use that one. The bike has a crack in the gas tank so we couldn’t put gas in it till we got a new one. We eventually did and after turning the fuel on we had a decent amount of gas leak from the carb. We were eager to start it so we kinda just ignored that and the bike started after a few kicks. Anyway, a couple days later we go to start it again and after kicking for 15 mins we couldn’t start it once. What could have caused this? I feel like it shouldn’t be the valves since it started right up after years of sitting the first time so if anyone could help me out that would be great thanks.
