New 2011 KTM 250 SX-F for off road/single track in the colorado high country

Recommended Posts

So so pumped to be a proud new owner of the bike. First KTM ever and very excited for the adventure.

So its a brand new 11' 250 SX-F with the fuel filter upgrade. Does any other upgrade needed before I put the bike on the dirt?? Any general things I should know before I take the bike to BFE??

Already ordered the .49 fork springs and 5.7 shock spring for the bike so it is sprung for my weight. I have also already purchased the gold valve kit for the forks, the gold valve rebound kit, and the G3-LD gold valve on the rear shock.

Now gearing is my next question?? go to a 12 tooth? I live at 8400ft but ride as low as 4k and as high as 13k.

New to the EFI game, does this pretty switch actually work and is it worth it? http://sicassracing...._mapping_switch

Big bore will be in the future, which one?

clockworks 280 kithttp://www.shop.clockworkktm.com/product.sc?productId=14&categoryId=8

or

Thumper Racing http://thumperracing...4&product_id=51

any exhaust or cam working really well to get more low end? any other suggestions to get more low end?

Installing some Renthal Fatbars, skid plate (thinking plastic for now, any suggestions?) and bark busters.

any other suggestion? advice on oil? upgrade air filter? suggestions for a first time EFI owner??

Very cool, enjoy the new ride. Let us know how it does above tree line!

Google dirt rider 20 things for a nice article on preping a new KTM

I'd get the cover for the TPS

Thank you! The suspension may be ready for the weekend. The bike will be a huge upgrade from my nicely modded XR, I am very stoked!

I also just noticed there is a sticky about mods, sorry for the over look. I was still pretty excited about getting the bike.

I will look in to a cover for the tps? You have a favorite?

Im 6'1, I have a set of windham renthal fatbars but took them off my old bike because I wanted taller bars. I am thinking about using them on the KTM with 30mm risers? do the riser change the way the bike handles? thanks for the help

also wondering if anyone has used this set up VS. the sickass set up? http://www.trailtech.net/040-HMS-A3A.html

Hi, my bike choice is yours, well done, and BTW, I'm a happy camper. For me the 350 is the perfect machine for an 75kg rider taking on anything the forest can throw at you. More nimble and useable than a 450 ( i have a KX450 which i use for MX only) The EXC 350 rocks but I like the motorcross version better, just needs a few more mods for full on enduro riding.

For what it's worth here's my changes for serious trail riding/extreme enduro.

1. Aluminium bash plate, happy to hit anything under there and will never crack an expensive engine case, I've seen to many plastic ones give up just when they were needed most.

2. Full wrap hand guards

3. Folding levers just in case a hand guard moves in a crash

4. Down a tooth at the front, up 2 at the rear (top speed loss is no concern, hill climbing is now a breeze, ratio rocks)

5. Funnel web filter (FWF) air filter, they really work, three times the surface area, bike breaths better, and for longer on all day rides.

6. Rear brake disk guard, can't stand hearing disks scrape over rocks or logs! I've never bent one since adding this little piece of kit

7. Moose tube in front wheel only, heavy duty tube in rear (I change my PSI in the rear from 10-17 depending on conditions)

8. Engine Map switch with gentle option selected on position 2 which is great when its muddy, hill climbing, etc

NOTE- No engine mods (=reliability) if I wanted (or needed) more power I'd buy a 450. Big bore your bike at your peril. The tolerance of every part of the engine is engineered for the way it came from Kato.

9. Silicone radiator hoses (better in every way) and Ducati (yep, Ducati) 25mm hose clamps, get em from your nearest Duke shop. They are awesome quality and cost about $2.50 each! Way better than stock. Also, Three less joins in the hoses (silicone hoses with factory linked joins) equates to three less places for failure.

10. Rotating 50mm foot pegs. I get complete contact when going up or down monster hills and once you get used to them you can never go back. They are awesome.

11. FMF mega bomb header and silencer. I really noticed the power spread upgrade and maybe 4-5 extra horses. And it sounds great (which is irrelevant but hey, sure is good to like the sound of your beast)

12. Low rise fat bars and Scotts undermount stabiliser. As an older rider still trying to go fast on all day (or more) rides I like the steering support. Way less arm pump late in the day and when climbing rocky sections less sharp hits too. If your young and still strong as an Ox maybe this is not required (they are expensive and the other brands (cheaper ones) just don't feel as good.

13. headlight/taillight for enduro rec rego

14. Motorex fully synth 4T engine oil and 95 rated fuel strictly

15. Hamerhead brake (with snake) and gear change levers, tougher and better, well worth it

Thats my Kato 350 bike overview. Aimed to keep me and bike going all day. All about reliability. Hope that gives you some ideas. It's all personal. I'm not looking to argue with anyone so if you don't like my upgrades that's cool with me, but please keep it to yourself.

Well Suspension is done and cant Thank Bob at Motovate enough for your awesome hard work.

Oh heck yes am I excited. Racetech springs front and rear for my 230lbs and all 3 racetech goldvalves.

Started the bike today for the first time.. Dang she sounds soo soo strong and darn pissed off.. 3 kicks from brand new to start.

Installed my graphics kit as well. I love it!!!!! hope others do as well but different strokes for different folks.

Black Renthal Windham bars,White Enduro Engineering hand guards/bark busters, Polisport extra protection skid plate, gold X ring chain and black Renthal 51 tooth sproket installed hopefully this weekend. Then on to the end less of fun parts to make it perfect for me. I hope to ride it tomorrow after work but mother nature has been blessing us with snow every day.

Finally got to drink the orange cool-aid and ride my bike this last weekend .. Well all I can say is that I am sooooooo IMPRESSED! Dang what a machine.

The EFI was spot on, the clutch is incredible and the brakes are brilliant. I also was very impressed with the motor, yes it does not explode with power but so so love the linear power band. I think when the motor breaks in a bit, it will be that much better. The suspension although still needs to be broken in is sooooo incredible. Sprung for my weight and with the gold valves even on the first ride putting down faster lap times through the loop than ever. Did not get all the parts on like I wanted but did get on the Polisport extra protection skid and I am also very impressed in this product. I am very thankful of Bob at motovate for his incredible hard work, getting the bike right the first time out, and him flat out being a great MX business owner.

Some pics of the Polisport extra protection skid plate
